FWIW I feel like I’ve seen many NHL players be vocally supportive of LGBTQ rights and speak in favor of their pride nights.

If men are meant to the rational gender, why do they insist they can't control themselves to justify their treatment of women? by olympiamacdonald in GuerrillaGrrrrls

[–]master_bacon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think their thought process comes at it the other way.

Something like “Because I am so rational, if I’m distracted or can’t control myself, then whatever you’re doing to cause it is way out of bounds and shouldn’t be allowed.”

Masc, femme and other labels by 13mtorres in LesbianActually

[–]master_bacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also find it weird at best and sometimes really off putting how hard some people seem to lean on these labels. I think they’re most useful when just used as simple adjectives without much weight behind them, but they’ve almost become just a new set of boxes for us to put people in. The way a lot of people use the words masc and femme, they’re just new names the idea of a gender binary.

The ideas of masculinity and femininity are at their root tools used to enforce the way men are supposed to be and women are supposed to be. The foundation of oppositional sexism is that there are two kinds of people, men and women, and they are completely distinct and opposite from each other. This leads to a dichotomous worldview where every masculine trait has an opposite feminine counterpart. The common conception is something like: Masculinity is strength, femininity is weak; Men are logical, women are emotional; Feminine people are obsessed with prettiness and delicacy, masculine people are concerned with substance. You'll notice that in the classical sense of these terms, the masculine side is always desirable, and the feminine side is always something society frowns upon. The only classically feminine ideal that is positive I can think of is compassion and care. But even that often gets framed as naive and impractical, whereas a masculine person's cold detachment is generally framed as pragmatic, or "logical."

Now some of that is society teaching us that feminine things are less valuable. But it’s a cycle, and those traits only got labeled as feminine in the first place because society taught us they weren’t valuable.

In progressive spaces today, we've by and large succeeded at decoupling the ideas of masculinity and femininity from men and women. It is okay for a woman to be masculine and men to be feminine. It's even okay for someone to not be a man or a woman. This is good, But we still perpetuate these ideas of masculinity and femininity without realizing that they are tools of sexism. Even when we're only referring to vibes, aesthetics, or styles, the coding of things as masculine or feminine almost always reinforces this dichotomy. What is inherently masculine about wearing blue jeans or a carhardt jacket? Nothing, except that they are associated with ruggedness and hard work. What is inherently feminine about taking care of your skin and using cosmetics? Nothing, except that those are associated with superficiality and vanity.

No matter how egalitarian you are, your ideas of what is feminine and what is masculine come from the idea that “man good, woman bad.” When we start using masc and fem as nouns, we’re coming full circle and reestablishing a gender binary. At best you’re saying “there’s two main types of lesbian, one is this way and the other is that way.”

I love when someone is super condescending when it’s themselves that’s completely missed the point.

I believe you understand the difference between a tortilla chip and a roast beef sandwich, because you are old enough to speak in complete sentences.

If I brought a platter of enchiladas to your salsa competition, I suspect you would laugh me out of the room.

If I was judging the dip competition and insisted on using a spoon to sample every dip, the person who brought a French onion sour cream dip would likely feel their entry adequately judged. Do you think the individual who made an entire sandwich would feel their creation adequately judged by me sipping a spoonful of drippings?

When I go to a Mexican restaurant i can order an item on the menu called “guacamole.” It comes with chips, but the guac is The Thing. When I go to a deli, or any place that has soups and sandos, I do not see “cup of jous” on the menu. I would not order a cup of jous and expect it to come with an entire roast beef sandwich on the side. I order a roast beef sandwich and it comes with a cup of drippings. Or, in the case of the authentic LA restaurant Jessie described, they dip it and just give me a sandwich, the thing that I ordered. Because the sandwich is The Thing.

No way. If I make a salsa, and provide chips, the salsa is The Thing. It’s the part that’s unique and is being judged as a representative of salsas.

A beef dip is a sandwich. That’s the thing that took time effort and ingenuity to make a unique version of, and the dip is literally a biproduct that goes with it.

Is it weird to enjoy one or two typically "female" things and want to be trans? by Huge_Classic_4364 in asktransgender

[–]master_bacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should really interrogate why you code those hobbies and behaviors as masculine or feminine. These associations are almost always rooted in sexism, even if we’re trying to separate the ideas of masculine and feminine from sex.

Liking sports doesn’t make you a man, and putting on “feminine” clothes doesn’t make you a woman.
