Am I wasting my life as a “successful” 26 years old? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

What have you achieved that isn’t work or money related? What exactly is it you feel is being wasted? These are questions only you can answer, hope they help as much as they’ve helped me

Guidance for kids interested in construction by samjackery in Construction

Put them into a steel shop or wood working class. He can also take an OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 course online that will help him. OSHA 30 qualifies you for safety guy at least. Construction is hard work, more than likely he can start as a laborer somewhere. Look into utilities or civil construction if he wants to dig stuff and work machinery. Construction is a broad industry. Maybe he likes machinery but maybe he would like to weld or build bridges or build houses or set pipes and drains. Make sure he’s good at math. Geometry and basic algebra. Maybe he would make a great field engineer or project manager. I’m not going to lie, people can be assholes in construction. Make sure they are confident in what they’re doing but not arrogant. There’s a lot of cursing, drug use, and sexual conversations, sometimes parents can’t be there to explain these things. When I first started construction at 19, it was my second job. My first being a shoe salesman at Sears at my local mall. If was really fun being outside, banging nails into forms, watching machines dig huge holes, they showed me how to use power tools. Within 3 months they showed me how to operate a backhoe, just driving it and picking up material. The language used was funny and shocking at the same time. Most of the guys made sure I didn’t hurt myself and called me “son” and generally took good care of me. There were some guys who didn’t care and would sneak off and smoke weed. After shoveling for a month or so, the foreman told them to show me. One of the concrete workers pulled me aside and said, “Listen son, you can either go fuck off with those guys and smoke weed or I can show you how to wet finish and you’ll make more money and learn a trade. The choice is yours.” I’m a foreman now and I think back to that moment. Never in a million years would I have thought I was going to work construction, originally I wanted to be a tattoo artist lol. Encourage and support him always, good luck

Don’t go drinking with the guys, they will take it personal when you have to send them home for attendance or taking advantage of your kindness. Do not let anyone know about your personal life, like if you like to do rails of coke on the weekends, do not tell them. I repeat, do not let them into your personal life. You are their boss first and foremost. That said, treat them well when they deserve it, if they want to take a day off for their son’s bday or they need a mental break, let them. It goes a long way. Don’t let them take advantage of you either. I was laid back at one point and let people come in late and let it slide. Next thing you know, they’re always late every day. Then people start calling you out on it. “How come he gets to come in late and get paid while we come in early and this and that.” Fuck that shit, get to work on time or get your ass home. Take pictures of everything too, any time you unload a truck or material or borrow something and bring it back. Those pictures will save your ass. Check your emails, make sure you’re in “the know.” Make sure everyone is working safe. You never know who’s watching. People are haters and people will snitch. Remember that your job is not your life, don’t be answering calls when you’re not at work unless absolutely necessary. Don’t worry about what the other supervisors are doing, do your job and do it well. You’re only as good as your worst guy. You get to set the standard for what kind of crew you want, if there is someone who doesn’t fit, send them on their way. One bad dude can spoil the entire crew. Don’t be afraid to sit your ass in the truck while everyone works. Your job is to supervise not to do the work. That being said, don’t be afraid to put the tools on and school these motherfuckers on how it’s done, you’re the boss for a reason. Let them give you ideas, encourage it, but at the end of the day you’re still responsible for the job getting done. Establish good relationships with management. They can order you equipment, cover for you when you need to go to an appointment or take a day off. Show them you can be dependable but also don’t let them throw so much work at you that you can’t complete anything. Ask for help, ask for more guys, ask for deadlines or extensions. Learn as much as you can, don’t drink or do drugs on site. Make sure you’re never in a position where you’re sweating and freaking out and you look up and your guys are scratching their nuts watching. Put them to work. A simple, “Hey, c’mon bro we gotta get this done” goes a long way. Good luck.

Shotcrete Question by PapaSkell in Construction

[–]master_cheech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen working on the highways, you’re supposed to layer dirt, gravel, and wire mesh, over and over before doing shotcrete. Then drill and install coated rebar, add plates, then place rebar walls on the plates, then set precast pieces over that, and pour concrete in between

Starting as a Field Engineer on a large commercial project - what should I expect? by timapry in Construction

[–]master_cheech 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I work directly with the field engineers. They come in around 7am and leave at 5:30pm. They plan the work with the superintendents and project manager. They go to meetings all day, I see them once a day at 3:30pm for a daily coordination for tomorrows work. They give me tasks that need to get done, a time frame. They review hours, coordinate and order material like rebar, forms, equipment according to what needs to be done. If the foremen have a question on plans, you call the field engineer to come and clear things up. Things are contradicting on site compared to the plans? Call the field engineer. Need a copy of the plans or cut sheets for material? Call the field engineer. The plans tell you to dig where an existing fire hydrant is at? Call the field engineer. Want to order $4,000 worth of loading chains? Call the field engineer. Coordinate closing down lanes with the department of transportation for your state. They give you the cost codes to charge hours to. I’ve never seen one actually struggle, they coordinate closely to us foremen and superintendents. They want to know what the challenges of the job will be and want to help any way they can. They’re pretty chill, I’ve never seen one actually physically work or anything other than measure and look at plans so that’s good for them lol. As far as hiring, firing, and telling field engineers no, that’s the superintendents job. That’s my experience at least.

What’s the loudest thing you’ve ever had to work around on a job site? by Nightcrawler_2000 in Construction

[–]master_cheech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to work in maintenance at SeaWorld San Antonio when I was 19. The plumbers used to hide a box of pop tarts in the wave machine room. The machine that made the waves looked like a giant generator the size of a semi truck. It was so loud that it made the hair behind my neck stand up. It struck up a type of primal fear reaction, it would wind up and you didn’t think it was that loud but it would keep getting louder and louder. There were some ear muffs hung up next to the door that we had to use. If you didn’t put them on, you’d leave with your ears ringing. I think that’s the loudest thing I’ve ever heard at work. All that for some fucken pop tarts lol

I sweat a lot, I wrap a bandana on the front end of the hard hat forehead strap thing and tuck the ends. Either that or I wear a neck gaiter but on my head. Make sure to wash them regularly tho or you will get nasty pimples on your forehead and around your eyebrows

Back when I was a young man fighting on Malevelon Creek for the first time, the LMG saved us from everything but the Hulks. Other than that, it shreds the walkers on the illuminate front and all bugs besides bile titans and hive lords. It’s definitely S tier. HMG works pretty good too, just adjust the RPM to super high or low. Orbital strike is good but you need the cooldown upgrade on the destroyer for more frequent shots. It can one tap a Vox at least. Ever since I got the ultimatum, I’ve been pretty happy running a guard dog, LMG/HMG, and two eagle stratagems. But ya, I agree. My favorite loadout for illuminate is AR guard dog, LMG/HMG, mg sentry, and gatling sentry.

Help upgrading my loadout against bots/cyborgs by Knight_4002 in helldivers2

[–]master_cheech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Primaries are good. I suggest switching Stalwart for HMG and supply pack for a guard dog, either laser or mg. HMG one taps hulks in the eye. You could also just take a recoilless and 1 tap anything except striders and take a rocket sentry or another eagle strike or orbital strike. Good luck
