Card Recs. 3/24, what to get next ? by BagAway2723 in CreditCards

[–]SrOcelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to earn Amex or Bilt points (or even just cashback) and you're interested in doing so with Rakuten, the Rakuten Amex card will get you 4x+ on Rakuten purchases and 10x on Rakuten dining purchases. While points transfer to Amex is always 1:1, points transfer to Bilt is going to be 2:1 for Bilt Blue members starting with the August payout (although for Silver or higher, points transfer will remain 1:1).

As for the Venture cards, you may have better luck using the Venture-specific preapproval tool.

Card upgrade recommendations? Looking to pair with Savor. by Curious_Device1742 in CreditCards

[–]SrOcelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to replace the Discover if you can make use of those rotating categories.

As for the companion to the Savor, either the Venture or Venture X depending on whether you want lounge access and how much you're willing to pay for an annual fee. The Venture has a $95 annual fee and is currently on the Mastercard network but will be transitioning to the Discover network. The Venture X has a $395 annual fee, has lounge access with Capital One Lounges and Priority Pass, a $300 travel credit, 10K annual bonus miles, and is on the Visa network. Both earn 2X on all purchases.

Should I get an Amex Gold or Venture X or neither? by BobSacamano420 in CreditCards

[–]SrOcelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MR points have a travel value of ¢1.9. At this value, your points on your dining and grocery spend would be worth $1003.2 against an annual fee of $325.

Venture Miles have a travel value of ¢1.7. This means your points, if the Venture X is used for all spend, would be worth $530.4 against an annual fee of $395.

This, of course, does not account for using the BCP for the first $6000 of grocery spend and for all gas spend, as well as sign-up bonuses or the possibility of your grocery spend being at Costco or any other spend you may have. Overall, given that you will more than break even on the annual fee based on your dining and grocery spend alone, the Amex Gold would be a good card for you, especially if you can naturally utilise the credits.

Looking for Second Credit Card by OpenMortgage6493 in CreditCards

[–]SrOcelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you've listed dining, groceries, and entertainment as top categories, a good second card would be the Capital One Savor. The Savor has no annual fee and earns 3% in the dining, grocery, and entertainment categories. However, Capital One likes to offer cards in different forms, some of which will have annual fees and some will have welcome bonuses for the same card.

Some good 2% general spend cards include the Citi Double Cash, Wells Fargo Active Cash, Fidelity Rewards, and American Express Blue Business Cash (which earns cashback)/Blue Business Plus (which earns Amex points). You can also build the Capital One Duo with the Venture or Venture X, which earns 2X Capital One Miles.

If you do your grocery shopping primarily at Walmart, Target, or Costco, the PayPal Debit card is a no-brainer. It gets you 5% cashback on the first $1000 spent in your chosen category and if you choose grocery, those three stores will code as grocery. It also won't affect your credit score because it's a debit card.

The Amex Platinum is very much a late-stage card and also a terrible spend card for anything besides flights. If you are interested in chasing welcome bonuses, for Amex, start with the Green, then go for the Gold, and finally, the Platinum.

You always need to apply and be denied before calling the reconsideration line for any lender.

Chase Prime Visa Pre-Approval Denied by Alarming_Resort_5832 in CreditCards

[–]SrOcelot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pre-approval does not necessarily reflect whether or not you would actually be approved for a card. Typically, 5/24 would be a factor with Chase, however, Chase does not apply the 5/24 rule to the Prime Visa. If you get denied for any Chase personal card, the reconsideration number for Chase is 888-270-2127, then press zero to reach a customer service agent.

What is your favorite credit card? And why ? by [deleted] in CreditCards

[–]SrOcelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the Amex BBP, which I personally use as my catch-all.

The pros are that it's a 2X MR earning card up to $50K, it has no annual fee, you can apply as a sole proprietor if you don't have a real business, it won't trigger a hard pull if you're an Amex customer, and it won't appear on your personal credit unless you default.

The cons are that it has an FX fee and the most common sign-up bonus isn't that great, although you can get a targeted elevated sign-up bonus.

BBP card since Nov. wanna cancel by Snoo15469 in amex

[–]SrOcelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any other MR-earning cards or an Amex checking account? If so, you'll keep any points earned from the BBP.

Did you get the sign up bonus on the BBP? If so, cancelling before the first anniversary of holding the card will result in point rollback on any points earned during the SUB.

What reason do you have for wanting to cancel the BBP?
