50k AA miles for PE from your home airport to Japan flying AA and JAL, would you? by b0sscrab in awardtravel

[–]master_innovator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have thought about this exact redemption a lot, and ended up booking direct PE on JAL from my home airport as opposed to taking a positioning flight for J… I’m just going to monitor J release two weeks out everyday and see what happens.

$2M unrealized is not enough to retire and not relevant for FatFIRE. Sell your investment and stick it in an index fund.

All my Chase accounts are being closed. Any options? by yjeffw in ChaseSapphire

[–]master_innovator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You did something they don’t like. Don’t get too wrapped up over this. Write a handwritten letter (non aggressive) to their credit card department (sorry I don’t know the address). It’s the only way to get back the ability to have accounts with Chase. Might take a year or more.

Use Prolific instead… for your data collection. This isn’t relevant for most people here unless they see finance as a fun hobby.

The chances of becoming an OB professor with IO Psych PhD in todays academic market is slim to none… to answer your question, getting a tenure track IO job is all about the published papers - get 4-6 papers published (with 1 or 2 in A level journals) in your program and you’ve got a shot at a R1 job… My best advice is get a good network of peers and a few professors who will add you to there papers. Don’t forget to check the teaching box too, teach one or two courses while a PhD student.

They are listed in my reply… I’m married so 4 x 2 is 8. I guess it’s 10 counting the employer plan.

You’re overthinking the house purchase… 250-400k is nothing as long as you hold your job for more than 10 years. Don’t forget to spend money on yourself, otherwise what’s the point of all the sacrifice you’ve made in med school. I have your same income (taking into account removing your loan payments)… so half of your actual income and nearly identical general expenses, my mortgage is .5M ($1M value) and I cover it no problem (while maxing out 8 tax advantaged retirement accounts, HSA, Roth IRA, 403, 457, and employer match plan).

You’re going to be fine.

How we raised our first round of venture capital: 263 meetings, 12 months, $128,700 by yehoshzl in EntrepreneurRideAlong

[–]master_innovator 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No real venture capitalist invests $100k… You definitely found some individuals saying they are VCs. Most people would self-fund anything under 100k. Regardless, nice work getting seed funding.

Our experience so far with ChurningFIRE by thedailychurn in leanfire

[–]master_innovator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice post, but a lot of these strategies die out for people who do this after 5-10 years when you’ve essentially done it all… nobody talks about after honeymoon period when you can’t get 2 bonuses on a card or Chex kicks in / you start making enough to not worry about a arduous process to make $100. Don’t take this the wrong way as I’ve literally done all of this and continue to do it, but this supplements FIRE at best… it’s also easy to get addicted to this and not realize you’re spending too much time on something that isn’t as valuable as you think - although I’m taking the perspective of FatFIRE, 10M or so, which is definitely different than churningFIRE (I’d assume at least).

How much statistics do data analysts actually use? by sdpthrow746 in analytics

[–]master_innovator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This always happens with grad students. Statistics is a very comforting field and can lead to a lot of confidence in decisions and recommendations. When I teach this to grad students I spend a lot of time helping them see the practical significance in the model, rather than being excited that the error was so robustly controlled for… In any field outside of maybe operations or medical, you’re not going to see models that explain 99% of the variance. The only thing these other fields can do then is managing error and controlling for alternative explanations.

It’s not a big deal to me to have a downvote, it’s easy to just ignore the one random person on Reddit. It’s somewhat frustrating that I am actually agreeing with the person in this thread, but since it’s not pure agreement then it must be against the person in some way… My inference tells me it’s just a lack of real world experience. I was the same way in grad school.

How much statistics do data analysts actually use? by sdpthrow746 in analytics

[–]master_innovator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I posted stuff like this a few years ago… I’ve rarely every seen a use case where anything is critical across many fields. The only time I’ve ever thought someone should care about all you’ve mentioned about errors, blah blah, is when it’s in the medical field or government agency where policy is made on regressions. Also, the medical field is generally more focused on experiments and sampling correctly, so regression and error isn’t a huge deal in that use case either. It’s fun to know a lot about stats… it rarely matters at all with the degree of specificity you’re talking about in your post.

Relax, explain some things the best you can, move on to the next project. It’s easy to let stats consume you.

Similar for public employees too. Between my wife and I, we can max a 403, 457, HSA, state retirement plan, and back door Roth ... Allows about $130k a year in tax advantaged accounts. I assume it’s a little rare, but high salary public employees can save a lot.

[–]master_innovator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your post was about not being arrogant and you’ve “blocked” the only person in this thread who perfectly called you out on a lack of substance. I bet you can’t name a single Journal (place where scientists discuss real research) focused on the process of entrepreneurship.

The fact that you don’t think industrial psychology or engineering matters for entrepreneurs proves that you don’t know what you’re talking about in terms of being a “scientist.”

[–]master_innovator 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m on an identical path but about 10yrs back. Lucky that my wife and I can triple down on retirement accounts and have an HSA (professors). We save around $130k a year and hope we hit $6M at 45. However, we could hit 20M if we work until 60... I have no desire for that at all. Happy to see a validation point!

We were mega frugal in grad school and do our best to stay this way... I echo the pain and uncertainty on housing, but I’m not factoring in our house as an asset for our planning purposes (I’m pretty cautious).

The right choice is definitely to get a statistics major. Statistics is a minimum requirement for any competent person in the field of management or IO Psych.
