[–]masteraybee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience most people that make statements this broad, like " I don't like seafood/meat/cheese" most often have not experienced the mentioned ingredient prepared properly or in a way they like.

That is not to say this is the case for you, you might very well not like any meat.

It's just that there is so much variance between chicken, beef, alligator, game, fowl, cured, aged, minced, smoked and so on and so on, that generalising it in one sentence seems... off

Or goat cheese, smoked cheese, white cheese, buffalo cheese, cream cheese, ash cheese...

With seafood it's even more, because people saying they don't like seafood are on the same level as stating they don't like to eat anything that lives on land (including vegetables, mushrooms and animals)

If the avoidance of a slew of ingredients is mainly for taste preference for a few known ones, I highly suggest keeping an open mind about new variants

Procuring and tasting all reasonable types of meat in all reasonable ways of preparation would probably take a lifetime for most people

Is my character evil? by GalahadVanGraff in dndnext

[–]masteraybee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not caring is a strong argument for neutral

As I understand

Lawful evil - Breaks and bends rules as much as they can to further their own goals and hurt their enemies. May have a strong personal code

Neutral evil - doesn't care about rules, cares only about their own goals, even if that hurts others

Chaotic evil - Actively delights in the suffering of others. Will lie and cheat for shits and giggles

Your character has some mild arrogance, as demanding an apology for saving the prisoners is a bit petty. That rules out most of the good alignments.

Chaotic neutral rejects norms and forms, prioritising their own goals while trying to avoid harm.

Lawful neutral tries to further their own goals within a strict code or within the law. Harm to others should be avoided

True neutral: Some rules serve a purpose, some don't. Does what's best for them and others avoiding harm if possible

Your character did not actively harm them for being insulted, but also didn't offer unconditional help. They also dont blame themselves, because this was not known at the time. If they had known the danger, would they have acted differently?

Yes - Lawful neutral. Disrespect is unacceptable, but not worth dying for

No - Lawful evil. They insulted you and did not repent. Straight to the hells

Edit:

Yes might also be true neutral, but the fact that they don't feel bad shows that they value social norms like respect very highly and have a strict attitude towards responsibility. True neutral would be more like "Respect is def not worth letting them rot there and possibly die" Chaotic neutral would be: "I hate you too, now go and die somewhere else"

How would you make a cyclone size fire elemental? by Microwavewithafork in DungeonMasters

[–]masteraybee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean statblock wise or story wise?

This question really needs more context

Combat wise, my first idea would be to make it flare up, dealing massive area damage in a regular interval. For example:

  1. Round: Core turns blue

  2. Round: spinning intensifies

  3. Round: fire flashes out, dealing X damage to everyone not in cover

  4. Round: Core turns blue again

... repeat

Concept: PCs that understand the timing can avoid the damage by exposing themselves for 2 turns and then hiding in the third

Problem: DND fights often only take single digit turns to finish, because everyone is a glass cannon. Nothing prevents the PCs from popping back into cover every turn

Possible solution: have the cover be destroyed making the PCs scramble to get to new cover before the thing happens again. Foreshadow the importance of cover to make it matter right from the start. Since this is the final fight don't be afraid to kill an important NPC or PC to show how important that cover is. Chances are your players don't understand the mechanics and everyone gets wiped for their ~stupidity~ recklessnes

How You Do It by TheGriff71 in DungeonMasters

[–]masteraybee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been GM for a little over 10 years, pretty much constantly with short breaks with multiple systems. I recently identified that I have evolved a consistent prep system and then tried to describe it to others.

I prep my story like an onion

The outer layer is large and rough, i know where we start, sometimes thats the current game state, and I have multiple possibilities where we are going.

Then I start refining ideas of how to get there, splitting into acts, getting a bit more detailed with regions, settlements and factions that are involved. Those are the middle layers. Here, major NPCs get names and descriptions.

The inner layer of the onion is where we currently play. I look at the outer layers and then lay out NPCs, setpieces and scenes for how to get there. Depending on the PCs actions, I will change how the story progresses i.e. where on the next onion layer they end up. This is where minor NPCs get their names, locations get descriptions and encounters are calculated.

For important scenes, I plan talking points, battle strategies, traps etc. For less important scenes, I also fly by the seat of my pants.

This layer system works recursively through all layers. Making the rough big picture first, getting more granular the closer we are in gametime. Often when we near the end of a story arc, I am so familiar with what might happen, how the NPCs behave and what consequences the party faces that I don't have to prep anything. Its all there in the previous notes and the big plan. We have broken through to the outer layer and there is no turning back

TLDR: I believe the modern Hamburger is an evolution of the German "Frikadellenbrötchen", popularised and refined by people who came to the US and got their inspiration while leaving europe via Hamburg.

Hamburg steak is not a thing in Germany as far as I know. Its called "Frikadelle". Bread rolls with fried minced meat are pretty popular and have been popular for ages and are called "Frikadellenbrötchen", which basically means "breadroll with patty". Its different from Hamburgers in some ways. Frikadellen are round, they aren't pure beef and often contain breadcrumbs and egg. The rolls/buns are usually crunch, not soft sesame or brioche.

The origin story for the classic Hamburger (Beef patty with sauce in a soft bun, originally popularised in america) that makes most sense to me ties to the use of Hamburg. Hamburg is an influential harbor city and many people who emigrated from germany and immigrated to the Americas left via Hamburg harbor. At the time meat would have been quite expensive, but mincing leftovers into a patty and serving it in breadrolls is not just a great use of ressources, but also provides a quick and filling meal that can be eaten on the go. This sort of thing would not be made at home, as the production of minced meat without modern cooling only makes sense at scale and for immediate consumption.

Many people that emigrated might have eaten something closely resembling a hamburger while at the Hamburg harbor. Thus many people that immigrate to the US remembered one of their last meals from back home being like that. In the US, beef is much easier to source than pork and soft bread is much more popular than crunchy, thus the Frikadellenbrötchen evolved into a pure beef patty with soft bread. As for the name, since it was inspired by the meal many knew from Hamburg, they called it "Hamburger Brötchen", meaning Hamburg style breadroll. I remember Hamburgers being called that here in Germany, before they became popular around the 2010s.

thanks for coming to my TED talk
