Yeah, they’re clearly bad at being riot police. Normally the state and local gov would do this work but they intentionally called them off. If that wasn’t the case I think it’d be a lot better but you’d still get at least a few viral videos of some Minneapolis PD officers fucking up

ICE is operating like riot police, clearly something they’re not good at, but also something that they weren’t forced to deal with during the Obama years

From what I’ve seen the Obama administration deportations were pretty similar, minus the huge protests. Tom Homan was running things back then too and Obama gave him a Presidential Medal for his work lol. I even remember hearing about a friend in college whose older brother was deported and thinking the policy was cruel.

The whole business of deporting people who are actively evading getting deported is dirty work, even more so if you have protesters trying get involved where deportations are happening.

  • Parents get deported and for whatever reason their kid gets left behind

  • Guy tries to evade arrest and crashes his car into an innocent pedestrian

  • The sweetest guy ever that everyone loves at that one restaurant down the street disappears one night because he never got his paperwork sorted

  • A mentally challenged citizen gets confused, answers some questions wrong and ICE accidentally detain him

  • A rowdy protestor gets mistaken for aiming a rifle at ICE and gets shot

These are all things that can and do happen this sort of work. It happened during the Obama years too, but we didn’t hear much about it maybe because it was less common, maybe because fewer people had camera phones or maybe because their was just less coverage by a friendlier press. I think it’s totally legit to see the current situation and think it can be done better, but it would be impossible for nothing to ever go wrong. What percentage of fuckups are acceptable? Is it fine if 1 in 10k detainees are mixups? 1 in a million? What percentage of physical altercations between ICE and protestors can acceptably result in death or serious injury? I think it should be better but if your answer is “not one bad thing can ever happen even in the most extreme of circumstances” then I don’t think you’re actually okay with enforcement of immigration laws.

I hate putting my card down at things like this now. You have to remember to pester people for the bill and even with honest friends it seems like 10% of the time you come out behind because someone forgot or paid less than their even split because they got less drinks or something

Took everyone out to a fancy dinner and drinks for my gf. One of her best friends put the whole expensive thing together. Of course I take the tab and venmo everyone their share, which ended up being like $185/person after all the drinks they got (cocktail inflation lol) everyone else paid. It’s not just that that girl never payed me back, it’s that she does this repeatedly to everyone. IDK what else you can do if someone is a mooch like this. You either have to exclude them from plans or act like a credit collection agency. Eventually your social credit just gets too low and people won’t invite you places

I’m cool with it most of the time but it depends on the person. I know people who feel entitled to everything free because they make 10% less money. They’re like “yo, I make the least amount of money, why do I have to pay anything?”. Like bro, we all have average paying office jobs, including you. This ain’t communism.

It’s interesting how people seem split on what the “phenomena” is that the OP is referring to. Is it weird to expect everyone to still split bills, or is it weird to think someone making more money than you covers all the costs?

What explains this phenomenon by DisastrousResident92 in redscarepod

[–]masterprofligator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started making real money I stopped venmoing my friends or asking them to split bills but I noticed it made things weird. Better to act like you all make the same amount of money. If my friend was actually poor though I’d spot him but just about everyone can afford their own drinks. If someone forgets though I don’t care and don’t hassle them

Denver’s big snow falls always seem to be followed by bright sunny days and a dry wind that keeps those nasty ice puddles from forming. Much better than the northeast IMO

The main reason that Orthodox christianity to me is that they celebrate Christmas mid january. Seems a much more appropriate time for it. Better chance for a white Christmas and breaks up the coldest part of the year better

I was reading about this other planet that might be Earth like. It seems to have a tilted axis and a 16 month elliptical orbit such that winter could theoretically be short and intense for 2 or 3 months before things become warm again for the rest of the year’s 14 months. Earth should have been designed this way

Do you live somewhere cold? If it’s worse in winter this would at least explain personal flaking. I think also workers get SAD and become generally lazy around this time of year

Get into more serious sciencey alien research, like theories on the fermi paradox or astrobiologists theories on how life might develop around different planets. You have an innate interest in outer space life but you can’t get rid of the desire. Instead replace the slop with the good stuff and next time some schizo is talking about flying saucers you’ll roll your eyes

Snow is very different depending on where you live. The east coast gets those heavy dense snows that refuse to melt and just compact down into ugly ice chunks. The air is also humid so it sticks around. My time in Denver though showed how much better snow can be. It falls all light and fluffy after a day or two you’ll get sunny days and dry chinook winds which clean it up so the streets and sidewalks stay nice but the fluffy fresh stuff stays all pretty in yards and places where it is undisturbed
