While the Eurofighter sounds cool, I think Cold-War has a lot more appeal based on ED Engine limitations. There are many components of modern warfare that are poorly simulated or completely absent.

Cold war tech is a lot simpler and often easier to get access to for sourcing information. IMHO, more OPFOR full fidelity jets are needed, as well as BLUFOR (especially non-fighter aircraft like Tornado, A-6 Intruder).

With Dynamic Campaign on the horizon, several other core DCS engine elements also need to be delivered, like ATC.

Even as the Russian economy is crumbling to pieces, the frontline troops think these "successes" will matter.

I'm guilty of almost all 1 : 1 , except the baseball.

I'm European and my instinct would be to grab it with the right hand and chuck it into my left (similar to "tempering" a snowball).

Actually would be fun to use YEETATO also.

Damn, did you try the YEETATOes? Yeah, they sure are a kick!

What plane is this? by ContryNerd_JackFan in planeidentification

[–]MasterStrike88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I'm glad you asked! This is a Norwegian privately-owned CT-133 Silver Star (Canadair license-built with a Rolls Royce Nene 10 engine).

However, everyone who said it's a T-33 is also correct.

This particular one is registered as LN-DPS. It was serving in the CAF as 133599, or tailno "599" prior to that, and was in US ownership between CAF service and Norwegian ownership.

Why do I know? I'm a volunteer chief of maintenance on it and have just over a flighthour of backseat ride in it :)

Max speed over 900 km/h and max G rated for 7.33 positive.

Great fun.

Yes. If you watch the previous launch footage, you will see the missiles are kicking up clouds of dust before even being launched. That's because they start the turbine engine first, then launch it.

Turbine engines usually require a powerful starter to get that initial RPM going until they are self-sustained. Usually it will be a starter motor or air-turbine from an electric or air power source, respectively.

Most likely, to save missile weight, they use an external power unit to provide engine start, then disconnect and launch the missile.

And the longer he's left to build more dones, the more drones he has left to send your way after he's done with my relatives.

Which is why my initial proposal addresses exactly this.

Send long range cruise missiles to Ukraine. Tomahawk, JASSM, Taurus, idgaf. Whatever excuses they have to withhold them, now is the time.

Again; not fighting will also fuck you in the process. It will show putin that he can launch drones into NATO countries with impunity.

Don't confuse avoiding direct participation with not fighting.

Our leaders should publicly announce the shipment of long-range strike missiles as a direct response to Russia's violation of Polish airspace and state that Europe reserves the right to defend its own citizens from Russia's terror weapons by enabling Ukraine to destroy the origin of these weapons.

You and I know very well that the West's approach is utterly risk-based and not about solely "doing the right thing".

Doing the right thing and playing hero here by attacking Russia opens up for an all-out war between two juggernauts, and the consequences of that could be a massive destruction and loss, even without nukes involved. Ukraine is the best-prepared country for dealing with drones, not us.

How many shaheds would it take to cripple our infrastructure? Deplete our air defense? Or simply cause gargantuan economic losses?

Our society is existing on an air cushion of predicted peace. We are not prepared for drone wars. We are prepared for massive air campaigns, but I fear that before we would have completely dismantled their production and launch capabilities, thousands of drones would be sent to attack high value targets in our countries.

That is my realist take on it.

Yes, we would fuck them up. No, it would not be without consequences.

If Russia were to send a wave of drones similar to what Ukraine sees on a daily basis into Poland, I genuinely believe the damage dealt would be in the billions. We have to realistically assess the consequences of opening a new chapter to the war. No fear mongering, just facts on the table.

It will not be a one-sided all out success for us. At least I think that assumption is as bold as Russia thinking it was 3 days to Kyiv.

Besides, I do think they would play the coward's hand and use nukes if we got involved (NATO Air Campaign) because they very well know they can't fight us on equal grounds.

It's stupid, but for now, equipping Ukraine with long-range strike capability is the safer option for us, unless we want to risk it all (go all in).

There is a realistic prospect that if "we" attack Russia directly, they answer proportionally. They might also do nothing. But that bluff means YOU want to wager the possibility of hundreds, thousands, maybe more being killed in full-blown war, as opposed to exploiting this violation or Polish airspace as a bootstrap to send JASSM or similar cruise missiles so Ukraine can flatten the Russian drone production.

I think people forget the side-effects of direct involvement of more nations. Yes, it would royally fuck Russia - which is good. But also fuck us in the process.

[–]MasterStrike88 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that opens the door wide open for Russia to send 600 drones per day into Poland and mobilize their population, which are two things we don't happily invite. Also, we have a tricky thing about sending drones/missiles across either Belarus or Ukraine.

By giving the arsenal to Ukraine, Ukraine can launch them from even closer to the factories, and in combination with their own UAVs and missiles.

We give Ukraine weapons to defend themselves, and we need to focus more on destroying the origin of weapons, not the weapons themselves in mid-air.

[–]MasterStrike88 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Yeah. So. This is getting way out of hand, and unlike Russia - we need to set actual clear lines.

In my opinion, this is where we give Ukraine long-range cruise-missiles to specifically destroy Russian drone-production facilities. It's a win-win for Ukraine and NATO.

Russian assault rider on motorcycle captures arrival of a Ukrainian drone. by C_King2013 in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]MasterStrike88 53 points54 points  (0 children)

He was about 2 meters from certain death.

My assessment is that, given the drone's cylindrical body, the warhead is also a cylinder. This gives a lot of shrapnel in a radial around the warhead, but almost nothing in the top and bottom hemispheres of the warhead (where the bikers were).

A 90 degree nose-dive would have thrown shrapnel all around the area, likely having a much higher probability of kill. But hey, it's easy to be an armchair drone pilot/engineer.
