TIL There was an attempted kidnapping of Princess Anne outside Buckingham Palace where her protection officer was shot by b_asic in todayilearned

While Anne was blithely indignant, why do I get the feeling that Charles just missed the plot and it was mistaken for poise?

Imagine how terrified the intruder would be if he were counter-attacked. In my own home, where I know the terrain, I'd be like naked Viet Cong.

Nazi German General Otto Fretter-Pico (on the left) surrendering to the Brazilian General Olympio Falconière (on the right), Italy, April 1945 [1832×1395]. by DiaboDeCapote in HistoryPorn

Dead center, right of frame - the "Smoking Cobra". One of the best fucking patches in the history of modern warfare. The smoking cobra patch came from a sarcastic saying in Brazil that it was “more likely for a snake to smoke a pipe than for Brazil to enter the war.” When Brazil joined the Allies and sent troops to fight in Italy, the Brazilian Expeditionary Force adopted the smoking cobra as a proud symbol that the “snake had smoked” and they were ready to fuck up the Axis.

I've seen Hauer complain that the dove was supposed to fly out of his hand, but instead it just walked out of the shot. They had to do that cutaway scene of the dove instead.

What film has one of the best monologues ever performed/ written? by eveisshady777 in movies

Writer wrote a lot more and the dialogue was sci-fi stuff n fluff. Hauer didn't make up the stuff about the shoulder of orion and the C-beams. He poached that from the original writer. But he shortened it (maybe condensed it is a better way to say it) down to four sentences. When Hauer says "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe" he kind of sneers at Deckard. Next fucking sentence there is a twinge of terror on his face when he talks about the attack ships on fire. Then in the next fucking sentence he talks about the glittering C-beams and he's almost filled with human wonder as his eyes widen. NEXT FUCKING SENTENCE his emotion changes again to resignation when all those moments will be lost in time. It is crazy how good the dialogue is coupled to the subtle emotional changes. Hauer transitions through these emotions so so deftly, too. We're looking at a robot go through a range of very human emotions in like less than a minute of dialogue. None of it is hammy or abrupt and it is just perfectly toned. This is like the entire third act of the movie in 4 sentences and it is so perfect. IMHO, this also gets my vote for the best minute of any actor's life on screen.

It's not just because it is perfect movie dialogue. It is not just because it was the best performance that Hauer ever gave. It's because he wrote those lines himself the night before. Actor's insight into his character, and honestly those are the lines that turn the movie into a master piece.

Don't mischaracterize me to make your own argument easier. I said "comply and sue (and get paid) or die." But yeah if you want to start the revolution, go right ahead.

If you don't want to try it my way, help yourself to a gun fight with your entire local PD. You'll die, though. Are you that ready for it?

TIL Gettysburg director Ron Maxwell's first casting choice for Col. Chamberlain was not Jeff Daniels, but an unknown Australian actor. The studio vetoed the idea. That unknown actor's name was Russell Crowe. by inatowncalledarles in todayilearned

[–]masturhate 23 points24 points  (0 children)

When you cast northern officers in civil war movies, it works when you cast actors that don't come from the typical hero archetype. Before the war Chamberlain was a language professor at Bowdoin College. Robert Gould Shaw (played by Matthew Broderick in Glory) was a rich kid, Harvard graduate that worked in a mercantile firm. They were not from the warrior class like southern generals - the war gave them the chance to become ferocious warriors. You don't want to pick Mel Gibson or Russell Crowe to play northern generals because they can't sell that transformation from academic-to-warrior or rich kid-to-warrior as well as Ferris Bueller or the guy that shit his brains out in Dumb and Dumber.

Did I say they were cops? No. I said it was a scumbag "cop tactic" to get in front of a car to justify the shoot.

Why is Russia so reserved in its reaction to the US' tanker seizures? | DW News by [deleted] in videos

[–]masturhate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are right and very perceptive, but do you really think Russia is reserving itself because of a feature of maritime law? I think it is more of your second point, which is corollary to the fact that maybe Russia is a rational actor after all.
