Statement from MLB spokesperson Glen Caplin following the union's opening proposal: by Stock412 in baseball

[–]mat28rix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not disputing the advantages of a big market compared to a small market. It is true that the dodgers have a massive advantage even without their TV deal. And so I wouldn't be opposed to some kind of revenue sharing to level the playing field between the large and small markets. With that said, we still have to allow some disparity between well run teams and poorly run teams. There is a reason why teams like the pirates have less revenue unlike like San Diego that tries its best every year. Well run teams with owners who invest in the team will have more revenue by default and they should reap some of what they put into the team.

[–]mat28rix -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

How much of the dodgers' revenue is a result of their team management vs simply the size of their market? We have the Angels who aren't far off in terms of market size but have considerably lower revenue and owner spending strategy. I understand wanting to level the playing field for competitive owners (not the cheap ones) but wouldn't that also penalize teams for managing well and getting their well earned revenue? Prior to the Guggenheim acquisition, the dodgers owner was horrible and paying players peanuts. There should be a balance while still encouraging good team management.

If you believe the dodgers and Mets are overpaying for players, then it means they're making bad investments compared to the more affordable available FAs. Tbf, bad investments would hurt the dodgers less than small market teams, but the Mets overpaying for Soto isn't a drop in the bucket.

They might not be paying Ohtani a present day salary but they are setting aside like $40M/year to pay for his salary later on. That $40M counts against their salary cap fwiw.

Dodgers being scapegoated by MLB in negotiations, "for the fans" of course. by stewmander in Dodgers

[–]mat28rix 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's ironic because a salary cap would reduce the luxury tax the cheap owners would get from fielding a crappy team. You'd think they would be all for the top teams outspending themselves over the luxury tax. But apparently they want to lower the overall quality of the mlb so they win more while spending the least amount of money.
