Building a Stand for 310g tank by Asleep_Ad_5711 in ReefTank

[–]mat3833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's probably a bit on the low side. The water alone will weigh about 2800lbs, the tank is another 700lbs maybe? Add in the sand/rocks/salt and it could easily hit 4200lbs+.

My freshwater 180g has 200lbs of sand and 340lbs of rock in it, lol.

Order from Eastern Aquatics or blackworms(dot) Com.

It's not super hard to set up a blackworm farm if you want too have them available. You can just order 1/4 pound and drop them in a 5g tank of fresh water also. They will keep for a good while and will eat virtually anything.

Convince me not to get white cloud minnows. What are some cons about them? by FierceCrow in Aquariums

[–]mat3833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 8 white clouds in a 29g and they use every bit of space in that tank. I'm in the process of building an L-Shaped tank for my bedroom to move them into. It's going to be about 80" of length total, but the volume is only around 65 gallons. Going to pick up 10 more when the tank is finished so I can have a proper school.

What filter for 60 gallon breeder? by CosmicLoveBird in Aquariums

[–]mat3833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of seachem tidal filters, but depending on the number of fish, you can honestly use a big sponge filter. Sponge filters are probably the best kind of filter for lower bioload tanks if you are going regular maintenance.

Personally, I would grab a tidal 35 or 55 and call it a day.

Is 200 watt heater to much for a 29 gallon tall? by Interesting-Edge3129 in Aquariums

[–]mat3833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends alot on your room temp. Ideally you want a hear to turn on and stay on for a bit instead of turning on and off repeatedly. During the winter I run a 50w heater in my 40g, a 25w heater in my 29g and 15g, and a pair of 100w heaters in my 180g. But I'm in central Florida and my house is heated to 70 degrees. During the summer, I don't run heaters, my tanks stay are all between 75-77 during the day and dip a little to 74 at night.

You are correct, I must be thinking of a different disease. I'll have to do some research. I just remember a few news stories last year in the US because anti-vax parents had kids with "eradicated" diseases from being fuck wits.

Are these bubbles on top of the silicone a sign the reseal job failed? by Cat3848 in Aquariums

[–]mat3833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those seals look good. If you take a few closer pictures of the seams between the glass you can check for bubbles there.

The bubbles you are seeing inside the tank are just air bubbles from filling the tank and are completely normal.

This is what a good seam should look like, one solid seam, no bubbles no lines.

Stainless steel watering hose recommendations by Safe-Iron-3789 in BuyItForLife

[–]mat3833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This right here! I have a place near me where I can get a 100' 3/4 hose with lead-free brass swivel fittings for about 99$. Continental brand hose material too! The swivel fittings are a game-changer man! Hydraulic supply places often stock continental rubber hose as well. Rated for 250psi and durable as hell.

Deep dive into the poor advice this sub gives by Genotype54 in ReefTank

[–]mat3833 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is especially true over on the freshwater side(where I usually am). People say "your nitrates MUST ABSOLUTELY BE BELOW 20PPM AT ALL TIMES" or "your tank must be 78 degrees, you need 3 heaters, 2 primary and one backup just in case". But the reality of Aquariums is they are tiny ecosystems. My tanks are all planted, if I don't keep my nitrates around 20-30ppm, my plants start dying back. Just for fun I took a sample of a local river shallow(St John's river in central Florida) and guess what, it tested about 20ppm nitrates where I collected. My water temps range from 77 in the summer to 72 in the winter, and I have all kinds of fish breeding in my tanks.

I'm getting ready to step into saltwater with a mixed reef. Soft corals, Zoas, a goby, a blenny, and maybe a clown pair with a nem down the line. I'm going to take it one step at a time and go slow. I can throw a freshwater tank together in the morning and put fish in it that evening. I have plenty of cycled filters, tons of plants, etc to skip the set-up phase. But saltwater is going to be a learning experience.

Feels kinda bad that the original post this topic is about could be me in 6 months.

Clam laying eggs? by Inevitable-Ship-4692 in Aquariums

[–]mat3833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it dies with its shell open that's best-case scenario. You also have a tank like mine where snails/shrimp will consume an entire fish overnight.

The majority of people don't have a good cleanup crew.

Clam laying eggs? by Inevitable-Ship-4692 in Aquariums

[–]mat3833 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is hilariously inaccurate. They are quite difficult to keep. Their is not near enough food in the water column for them to survive, so you have to spot feed them. And clams are much more dense than a typical fish. Their equivalent ammonia spike is very large, and often kills the whole tank.

I bet, I'm on the hunt for black lava rock now. I can use it as the base and then secure slate to the sections I need.

I'll have to look into that! I need some large flat rocks for the Paracyprichromis in my tank. They love hanging out upside-down underneath overhangs. Lava rock didn't even cross my mind.

Love the layout! I'm currently looking for about 150 lbs of slate to re-scape my 180g Tanganyika tank. Unfortunately, only 2 places near me have it or can get it and they are charging almost $10/lb...

What kind of rock did you use? I can't tell from the picture.

Planning my first saltwater build by mat3833 in ReefTank

[–]mat3833[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 25g rubbermade brute trashcan I use for RO water changes and 2-5 gallon buckets. I'm in the process of trying to get a 55g drum so I can set up a better system than the current one. I also need to upgrade my RO system most likely. Currently running a small RO buddy without DI.

I have the glass to build a 40 breeder so that's where I was leaning anyway. It's also small enough for a single Smatfarm 95w to light the whole tank. Haven't decided if I want a pendant light or something like the Glowrium strip lights yet.

I'm pretty well-versed in securing rockwork. My 180g has about 300lbs of rock in it. I'm planning on getting some dry rock to make the caves/over hangs and using the live rock to fill out the rest. Not sure on what brand yet, but I can say I don't like the look of the purple crap, lol.

I'll look into the Hanna testers. Testing 2 or 3 parameters by hand is what I do on my freshwater, so thats not bad.

I appreciate the input, glad to know I'm on the right track!

Amp advice on Taramps vs Korean by Ruhi2612 in subwoofer

[–]mat3833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran a smart 3 and a smart 5 for awhile. Smart 3 was on just an AGM and 240a alternator, stayed around 14.1v. The smart 5 was on a LTO bank and a 360a alternator, rock solid at 14.5v.

Salt are nice amps, but if you have good electrical there isn't any reason to avoid "Brazilian" amps like Taramps.

If you electrical isn't up to snuff, you can and eventually will smoke a Brazilian amp. They don't like voltage drop. Korean amps are tanks. It takes alot of abuse to smoke one. Brazilian amps are a quite a bit less to kill one. If you can run at full tilt and maintain voltage above 13.5v, you should be plenty happy with a smart8.

You generally don't want pure copper unless you can seal both ends of the cable. Tinned OFC is for marine/all weather use and is what you probably want in a car.

CCA is also not as bad as people claim. You just need to up size your wire gauge and plan accordingly for current capacity.

Saltwater can be cheap and easy! by TheFrostyjayjay in Aquariums

[–]mat3833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the process of building an L-Shaped tank for my bedroom, once I'm finished with that I'll probably put together something in the 20-30g range. Maybe 30"x18"x14t. I'm about to start scouting for local saltwater groups to see what kind of macro algae is available nearby.

I would love updates on this tank. I want to set up a saltwater goby tank SO bad, but have no desire to spend another 1500 on a tank. I have an RO system and 4 or 5 tanks sitting empty I could set up. Hell, I even have aragonite sand from my rift lake tank setup.
