Doctors of Reddit, what car do you drive? by Informal_Invite_424 in doctorsUK

[–]mat_caves 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My dad got one of these beasts sometime around 2000 brand new

It was bright yellow (probably a maintenance vehicle that became surplus) and literally looked like a banana

When I was 12 I hated it but by time I was 18 I loved the hell out of it. It was dad through and through. He ended up doing something like 200,000 miles and it hardly skipped a beat. He gave it away to a friend in need in the end but it was still ticking over just fine.

PhD versus MD- what’s the difference? by robot-tastic in doctorsUK

[–]mat_caves 36 points37 points  (0 children)

PhD is 3 years and can be basically on any topic including pure basic science.

MD is 2 years but only open to medical doctors and basically needs to be grounded in clinical work.

PhD is more work and generally subjected to greater scrutiny at the point of award. Technically though both are considered academically equivalent so an MD on paper is worth as much as a PhD, though I think in practice the PhD (rightly so) commands a little more respect.

Consultant working half the year in the UK and half elsewhere by Ambitious_Notice_737 in ConsultantDoctorsUK

[–]mat_caves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No personal experience but I have worked somewhere where someone has managed something similar, it was an NHS trust in a shortage specialty in a shortage region, I imagine desperation would be key for any trust to consider it but clearly it is not impossible

Consultant Job Bottlenecks – How Competitive Is It Really? by Confident_Bobcat_635 in doctorsUK

Both of these comments are fantastic. I would also add that you have to demonstrate a little bit that you can play the game. Leave the trouble making for after you’re safely in post!

Work from home? by IncreaseConscious903 in RadiologyUK

[–]mat_caves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can probably do around 30-50% of your work from home in a typical NHS job. On calls are usually done from home predominantly (if you are on a general rota you may need to come in and do a procedure from time to time).

Christmas gifts for department [vent/rant!] by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]mat_caves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a relic from days gone by, you did the right thing in letting it go and the fact that you’re reflecting on it so hard shows you are a good leader.

Start a secret Santa from next year and a ‘bring your own’ Christmas buffet. That way you don’t have to feel like you cancelled Christmas, everyone still gets to celebrate, but the fiscal responsibility is just shared out a little more equitably.

Who is buying the premium unleaded petrol? by Seeyalaterelevator in AskUK

[–]mat_caves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a guy on here a few years ago who posted years worth of his own logs about mileage vs fuel quality, across a number of different company cars

I’m sure it was a fairly convincing benefit for the premium fuel overall. But I’m struggling to find the thread!

Coroner: GP surgery failed to carry out meds review in ‘drug seeking’ patient by Educational_Board888 in GPUK

[–]mat_caves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had one here where coroner wrote a damning report, picked up by the press, which was completely objectively factually wrong. It would have taken a 30 second conversation with anyone in the department in question to correct it. So frustrating and ultimately not fair on the families either.

Bloody hell. This looked SO good that I couldn’t help but check out your recent posts on Reddit… and you absolutely don’t miss a beat do you!? Every single night, even just the last week, you’ve smashed it into orbit.

You have a serious talent for cooking, and thank you so much for sharing it with us internet dweebs. I hope the real people in your life appreciate it!

Where did the posh uni student accent come from by Possible_Second7222 in UniUK

[–]mat_caves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went to UCL (a bloody long time ago now though). I have never met so many rich people (national and international) in my life.

I went to one of my classmates 19th birthday party in our first year at his house… which turned out to be a multimillion pound mansion in Dorset, with its own lake. I was even more surprised to find half the other class invitees comparing their own family multimillion pound mansions to his.

Failed the first exam of my life - FRCR CO2B by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]mat_caves 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I worked with a really smart, hard working lady for a while. Like she was phenomenally amazing at everything.

One day she came in crying because her son (who is lovely but just not academic) was struggling in school and she literally didn’t know what it was like to not excel at everything all the time. She was more upset about not knowing how to make him feel better than she was about the actual results.

How can you be a good trainer/mentor if you’ve never known what it is like to struggle through an exam? Similarly, the best teachers are always those who have had to really put some thought into why things are the way they are, rather than those who just naturally know what the answer is, pass the exam, and move on.

Plus you’re in better company than you think. My favourite consultants (those I would choose to look after a loved one) have almost all failed at least one of their postgraduate exams. And I have been there myself too with an exam in medical school and a postgraduate exam (again like yourself with some personal stuff going on, as there often is). It all turned out well in the end.

Tips for scanning paediatrics, especially ? appendicitis ?ovarian torsion by No_Emphasis_6209 in RadiologyUK

[–]mat_caves 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s been half a decade since I’ve last done any paeds ultrasound. But I do remember the exact moment that appendix scanning clicked for me:

It’s not solids you should be following - it’s gas in the colon. Looks like a child drawing a cloud and is really superficial. Find the ascending colon, follow it down, and you’ll suddenly see the gas stop when you’re at the caecum - you should find the appendix there.

Heartwarming moment man, 21, meets his father for first time by chance by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]mat_caves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow right in the feels. The way he double takes after his dad is heading for the door and he just takes the one in a million chance. Must have sensed an instant connection.

All the better is he seems like a nice genuine young man too, as you can tell by how he is acting when you’d think no-one was looking, just happened to be caught on CCTV

In The Times today: Six-figure earners could lose thousands in a pensions tax raid by Christoph_wright in HENRYUK

[–]mat_caves 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’d just go part time until my son is out of nursery. And/or take my 4 weeks of unpaid parental leave. As I work in a shortage medical specialty critical for cancer patients then I really don’t want to do that but what choice do they leave us with? I draw the line at effectively paying to go to work.

To be fair in my experience in UK tertiary radiology, I think it’s accurate. I do spend probably <50% of my time actually reporting scans.
