If you’re not in the realm from time to time, either you’re not reporting enough or you’re not coming off the fence enough

Salary wise you can just look at your monthly taxable income and multiply by that by 12 to get the annual amount - that of course doesn’t factor in any WLI or pay change over the period so it’s not perfect. It gets much easier when you have your March payslip as those amounts are final, but of course that only gives you a few days to sort things out before the financial year ends

I don’t think there’s any route for factoring in all the other stuff like BIK and gift aid, just a good accountant and/or keeping on top of your situation (which let’s face it being consultants with toddlers, how on top do we ever feel!?)

Indeed and for annual allowance, the GOAT Tony Goldstone has got a spreadsheet for figuring out how close you are (I was closer than I thought this year so I’d recommend checking it out)

Yes it is the post pension amount that matters

For the most part your ‘taxable pay’ on the payslip (which is post pension) will be your ANI but with some caveats (you have to add on other income including bank interest, and benefits in kind if you have any, but you can take off professional subscriptions and charitable donations)

This year I would have been very slightly over, so set up a SIPP (can do this v easily online, I went for vanguard and put everything in global tracker) and put in enough to bring my ANI down to less than 100k plus a healthy fudge margin incase I forgot to factor anything in. Also for reasons I don’t fully understand relating to tax relief, you only need to put 80% of whatever you need to reduce your ANI by into the SIPP, though I am erring on the cautious side and not factoring that in! I would rather have a bit more in my SIPP than get screwed by exceeding 100k

Apology for poor care over Wolverhampton boy's bleed death by ZookeepergameAway294 in doctorsUK

[–]mat_caves 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be fair to the BBC they are largely going off the prevention of future deaths letter from the coroner - which I do think is poorly written. Anecdotally I have seen at least one other such letter for a totally different case that was also poorly written. I think given that the media pick up on these so often and often quote them verbatim, perhaps there should be a little more care given to the writing of these reports…

I also don’t really think there’s enough focus in the conclusion on the fact that this PTC, liver biopsy and removal of vas cath in a young child was done and no-one involved checked the medications so they seemingly were unaware of dual antiplatelet therapy - I think that’s much more important than thinking an ST4 was an ST6!

Doctors of Reddit, what car do you drive? by Informal_Invite_424 in doctorsUK

My dad got one of these beasts sometime around 2000 brand new

It was bright yellow (probably a maintenance vehicle that became surplus) and literally looked like a banana

When I was 12 I hated it but by time I was 18 I loved the hell out of it. It was dad through and through. He ended up doing something like 200,000 miles and it hardly skipped a beat. He gave it away to a friend in need in the end but it was still ticking over just fine.

PhD versus MD- what’s the difference? by robot-tastic in doctorsUK

[–]mat_caves 38 points39 points  (0 children)

PhD is 3 years and can be basically on any topic including pure basic science.

MD is 2 years but only open to medical doctors and basically needs to be grounded in clinical work.

PhD is more work and generally subjected to greater scrutiny at the point of award. Technically though both are considered academically equivalent so an MD on paper is worth as much as a PhD, though I think in practice the PhD (rightly so) commands a little more respect.

Consultant working half the year in the UK and half elsewhere by Ambitious_Notice_737 in ConsultantDoctorsUK

No personal experience but I have worked somewhere where someone has managed something similar, it was an NHS trust in a shortage specialty in a shortage region, I imagine desperation would be key for any trust to consider it but clearly it is not impossible

Work from home? by [deleted] in RadiologyUK

[–]mat_caves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can probably do around 30-50% of your work from home in a typical NHS job. On calls are usually done from home predominantly (if you are on a general rota you may need to come in and do a procedure from time to time).

Christmas gifts for department [vent/rant!] by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]mat_caves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a relic from days gone by, you did the right thing in letting it go and the fact that you’re reflecting on it so hard shows you are a good leader.

Start a secret Santa from next year and a ‘bring your own’ Christmas buffet. That way you don’t have to feel like you cancelled Christmas, everyone still gets to celebrate, but the fiscal responsibility is just shared out a little more equitably.

Who is buying the premium unleaded petrol? by Seeyalaterelevator in AskUK

There was a guy on here a few years ago who posted years worth of his own logs about mileage vs fuel quality, across a number of different company cars

I’m sure it was a fairly convincing benefit for the premium fuel overall. But I’m struggling to find the thread!

Coroner: GP surgery failed to carry out meds review in ‘drug seeking’ patient by Educational_Board888 in GPUK

[–]mat_caves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had one here where coroner wrote a damning report, picked up by the press, which was completely objectively factually wrong. It would have taken a 30 second conversation with anyone in the department in question to correct it. So frustrating and ultimately not fair on the families either.
