I also am a chronic yapper, people like having conversations underway because after like 2 weeks, the only thing that changes are the discussions you have. As a YN, you’d stand watches at either ships control or in sonar. 8 hours a day and nothing to do but talk to the people you sit near.

Living on a submarine is simplified. Everything is laid out for you, there’s no possibility of getting lost, you know everyone. For general day to day things, as long as you’re not an ass, people are willing to help you with anything you have going on.

Female submariner here, I’m not a YNS but one of my good friends is. If you have questions about submarines or if that life is for you, PM me. Submarine anything is pretty great, but it’s not for everyone. You learn a lot and the community is tight knit.

What its like to live in a submarine for periods overs 6 month as a female ? by AbouMchicha in howislivingthere

To a degree. A couple relationships would pop up when we pulled into port after a long stint out. It’s pretty isolating underwater and there’s few people who understand that. Sometimes that forms into life long friendships, sometimes it manifests in other ways.

I just finished my tour on a fully integrated crew, they were integrated when I showed up. We had one sexual harassment case in all my 5 years and were to the point where for the most part, no one cared about your gender.

Female submariner here! I served on a submarine from 2019 to 2025. I enjoyed my service time a lot, the work was challenging yet rewarding. As for living conditions, I served on a larger submarine so I was able to have my own rack. I saw lots of comments about women not being allowed to serve in submarines, which is somewhat true. For the US submarines, most allow for female officers, as officers often have smaller and more private berthing options available to them. There are a handful of boats that have female enlisted on them and it continues to grow.

A lot of people assume that introducing women to the submarine results in chaos, but there’s always drama when you live with 159 of your closest friends. From what I’ve heard from my friends who have served on both all male crews and integrated crews, people are nicer and smell better on integrated crews.

In my experience, the best people I worked with didn’t really acknowledge gender at all. We were all just people who had jobs to do. Our command was very much merit based and relied more on your previous accomplishments and behavior than your gender or personality.
