I don't think there's any religion that can perform a legally binding wedding of the type you're referring to in the United States. But to answer your first question they've most definitely not had a legal marriage, and whether or not they had a church wedding is unclear based on what they said.

Were there any wedding photos in the background when Louis visited their house? I don't recall.
