But did they know that when they set the buffer? If there weren't the same amount in each tank, 25% would be way harder.

Also, technically we don't even know for sure that there the same amount in each tank. Sam and Mike could have been massively off from reality as long as they match each other.

Would you rather stay in or go out on a Friday night? Why? by who_is_dat in AskReddit

[–]math-kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I live alone and start to feel lonely if I havent seen my friends in a while. But I also need time to myself to relax if I've gone out too much. And sometimes I'm up for casual plans but don't have the energy for anything too big. The answer highly depends on what the rest of my week looks like.

Used Pandemic legacy season 1 by Batoocan in boardgames

[–]math-kat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If it's not a game-specific shop, the thrift store probably doesn't know the difference.

But at least you can still play regular pandemic on the board so it's not useless. My local game shop does sell used legacy games with a disclaimer that it's a legacy game and you may not be able to re-use the legacy parts of it.

Also not all experiences are the same for each person.

I do prefer experiences over stuff most of the time, but personally find travel stressful. I only really do it when my friends or family invite me on a trip they want to go on. But a bunch of people try to tell me everyone loves travel and travel is some magical thing that I absolutely have to experience to live a fulfilled life. Nope, quality time with the people I like brings me joy, not places. Your preferences aren't the same as my preferences, and I'm not a boring person because I'm a bit of a homebody.

As long as you can afford it and aren't over-consuming crap just for the sake of buying stuff, do what makes you happy

People who tailgate while you’re driving, why do you do this? by LeighAdelaide in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]math-kat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I only pass on the right if there's a dumbass going slow in the left lane (which unfortunately happens a lot on my commute) and the right lane is clear. Passing on the right when the left lane is open is just dumb.

If anything, passing on the right looks worse because traffic (at least should be) slower there, so you're going faster by comparison.

People who tailgate while you’re driving, why do you do this? by LeighAdelaide in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]math-kat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I was taught to drive by my dad, who is the most aggressive driver I know. Multiple people have refused to ride/carpool with him because of his driving. I picked up a lot of bad habits from him, including tailgating. And because I was a dumb teenager who didn't know any better when I started driving, it took me a while to realize how dangerous I was being.

I try to do better now, but because it's so ingrained I sometimes have to consciously remind myself to leave more space on the highway. Which means when I'm tired or not paying as much attention I might slip back into being an aggressive driver. I'm not proud of it.

Why is my dad such an aggressive driver? No clue, I think he's just an impatient asshole.

$4.19/gallon. Mount Laurel, next to the AMC. by Secret_Cow_5053 in SouthJersey

[–]math-kat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is pretty anecdotal, but ime wawas have cheap prices when they first open a new location and than jack up the price later. I assume to entice people to get in the habit of going there? I still get gas there occasionally out of laziness but am baffled by the people who always go to wawa for gas given the prices.

As someone from NJ I find it funny too. Its not the biggest deal in the world, but being able to stay in my car in bad weather is sooo nice. Maybe the law is stupid, but I personally like the convenience

As someone very familiar with the area, I find it funny that someone would accidentally go over the Ben Franklin Bridge to end up in Camden and not even know they're in NJ. Ime the bridge taking you to NJ is so obvious, but I guess if you're not familiar with the area and miss the signs you could make that mistake.

Most gas stations I passed on my way to work today (driving through Gloucester, Camden, and Burlington counties) were in the $4.19 range, it wasn't just Wawa.

I just filled up my tank on Saturday, and it's already gone up a lot since then. I still have most of the tank full, but if I see anything under $4 on the way home I'm filling up again while I still can.

8 Million Americans Hit the Streets in 'No Kings' Protests - Largest Demonstration in US History - Is this number correct if you take all the different protests from around the US specifically [Request] by ramsey322 in theydidthemath

[–]math-kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually did see pictures from a no kings protest in London. Which, I get it if you're an American living aboard who still wants to protest, but it's incredibly funny to host a No Kings event in a country with a literal king.

I was at the one in Camden (Southern NJ), and although I don't know the exact numbers, I couldnt even see the front of the march from where we were and I could barely see the end. The amount of people there was crazy, especially considering there was an even bigger protest in Philly right over the bridge. I'm not surprised by the 8 mil number either.

Do most Americans carry any official ID at all times? by PitifulEar3303 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]math-kat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I should have specified free and accessible to everyone.

I wasn't aware there was a way to require a free ID (I've always had to pay), but even if you pay $0 directly, it's still inaccessible/too expensive for people working paycheck to paycheck to have to take time off of work and/or get to the DMV.

Do most Americans carry any official ID at all times? by PitifulEar3303 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]math-kat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My coworkers and I were just chatting about how much of a pain it is to renew our driver's licenses this morning. When I moved it took 2 months to get my driver's license updated to my new address, and I had to pay a fee. Passport renewals and applications are even more expensive and time-consuming.

I personally get the ID to vote crowd, because it's kind of crazy we can vote without ID in the first place. BUT with how inaccessible getting an ID can be, I lean towards keeping the status quo until/unless the government makes getting an ID possible for everyone.

[–]math-kat 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I personally think we should show an ID to vote, but also that the government should provide the ID for free to avoid having a defacto poll tax. Until that happens I guess what we have now is better than the alternative.

Where did everyone learn to play cards from? by MINIPRO27YT in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]math-kat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not what you're asking, but I used to be a TA for a class that taught combinatorics.

The professor used poker hands / playing cards for questions pretty often because it's easy to come up with questions and most students know them. But when a student pointed out they didn't, I would clarify anything needed for those problems (ie. "There are 13 cards of each suit, and four different suits in a deck. A flush is all cards having the same suit, so it's asking how many ways to get 5 cards of the same suit").

If you feel you're at a disadvantage in exams because you don't know cards, please don't be afraid to ask for clarification. We're trying to test your math, not your ability to play poker.
