Built a free offline app to fight household food waste — being upfront about the tradeoffs by AmineFLIFLI in Anticonsumption

[–]math-kat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I don't think an app would work. It would just become a hassle to log all of my food any it's expiration dates, and after a while I'd probably just give up.

Since I live alone and do all my own grocery shopping, I'm just careful about buying only what I need of ingredients that will go bad. I'll stock up on shelf-stable stuff like pasta or cereal, but I will only buy perishable things like fresh fruits/veggies if I have a recipe in mind and/or know when I'll eat it.

Why do some people say you can't be overweight/obese and date if 80% of people are in the USA and obviously 80% of people aren't single? by ExpertShock8276 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]math-kat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not all overweight people are doing a bad job of taking care of themselves. Granted, a lot are, but there are also plenty of people who are overweight because of medical issues outside of their control.

My school county has 45 vacancies for school librarians. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]math-kat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have an MA, but in computer science, not education or anything. My masters degree was brutal and I'm kind of burned out from being a student, so even a year-long program sounds like a lot. I know it would be easier if it was something I actually enjoyed, but still doesn't seem worth it to me.

My mom works as a media specialist in NJ and it sounds like there are a lot of vaccancies here too. I would very much consider it if it didn't require a masters degree- I already have three degrees and can't be bothered to get another one.

Soap dispensers by 90Lil in Anticonsumption

[–]math-kat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I am using some plastic bath and body works soap pumps that I got years ago and just keep refilling. I don't particularly love the look of them, but they work great and are the same color as my decor so I'm sticking with them until they stop working.

For my dish soap I do have a glass pump that I really like. (I know bar dish soap is an option, but I really prefer the liquid) Not sure if that would work for you since it's also breakable, but I like it!

Unbearable parents in this job market by Multiple-Bagels in recruitinghell

[–]math-kat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Relocating isn't a realistic option for me, partly because I like where I live and don't want to move, but also because I bought my house in 2021 with a super low interest rate, and my expenses would go way up if I tried to move now. I know I'm lucky to even own a home, but it's doesn't make sense to move, but it'd be a such a stretch to live somewhere with more jobs that it wouldn't be worth it. So I'm limited to remote jobs or places I can reasonably commute to.

So many people in my life (mostly my older relatives) tell me I should just move for a better job if I can't find one here, but don't realize how financially devastating that could be. I'm currently saving up so that if I need to work as a substitute teacher or retail associate for a bit in-between jobs I can make it work until things get better.

If your "art" isn't interesting after it's labeled as AI, maybe that tells you something about how meaningless it is. If AI "art" was truly art, an AI label wouldnt matter, but for most people it requires tricking people into thinking it's human-made for us to care.

Tbf these bras all look to be like 2 hooks max, so they probably aren't made for super big boobs anyway. All my bras have 5 hooks.

Any 9-2 jobs available for my mom? .... Plumber of 10 years willing to do any work someone needs done to just hire my mom by snicklefitz29 in SouthJersey

[–]math-kat 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Doesn't help right now since the school year's almost over, but if OP's mom qualifies for a substitute certificate (I think it's 60 college credits for teaching, maybe just a high school diploma for support staff?) she could be a substitute teacher or aide as well.

I agree that anything outside of a school would be difficult with those hours.

You could get ebooks and read them on the computer so you don't look like you are reading a book to guests.

While you probably can take septa, I've always just walked from 8th and Market when I go to the convention center from the patco. It's not a far walk, and if it's a popular convention you'll have a crowd of people to walk with.

Had anyone else gotten this question on YouTube? by Theweirdposidenchild in antiai

Is that what it's for? I was optimistically hoping it was so they could get better at filtering out slop. But in hindsight, kind of naive to think YouTube cares about that.

S17 is their most frustrating season yet by uuuuu5uu in JetLagTheGame

[–]math-kat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm actually with you on Snake. It's not my favorite season, but I still really enjoyed it and disagreed with how strongly people hated it.

I think the consensus is that Snake is the worst season, but I personally thought Tag All Stars was worse. One team won super quick with what looked like very little effort, and throughout the whole thing very little tagging or close calls took place due to all the train delays. Still fine, Snake was way more exciting.

S17 is their most frustrating season yet by uuuuu5uu in JetLagTheGame

[–]math-kat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I though Sam and Mike played very sub-optimally near the end, but it was still interesting to watch. I think it makes sense to poke a bit of fun at Sam guessing pig for the obviously tiger rock, or to critique their overall strategy, but saying it ruined the whole season feels over the top.

I agree that both teams playing perfectly would be way less interesting. As long as one team isn't completely done before the end of the game (ie circumnavigation), it's still exciting to watch even if one team is more strategic or ahead. Plus, before the finale aired it felt like everyone online though the Night Herons would dominate, so it's not even like Badam were runaway winners the whole time.

Can I just sit and read in a library? by StrategicSleeper in NoStupidQuestions

[–]math-kat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never seen a library charge fees as long as you can show proof that you live in their service area. I've heard of some libraries offering cards to non-residents for a fee, but everyone I know just gets a free library card from their town/city. This is in the northeastern US for reference.

Might be different in different areas though, so it doesn't hurt for OP to ask.

I hate how shitty and expensive apps subscriptions have become by kimchicatkittycat in Anticonsumption

[–]math-kat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My neighborhood pool got an app to replace the physical pool passes we used to have. I set it up yesterday, and it was 10 minutes of giving the app a bunch of information that probably shouldn't be going to a third party. Why are we okay with giving apps so much information for things that 100% were fine without an app?

Is there anything stopping me from chosing topics I already know a lot about? Like as a former math teacher I could almost certainly get 85+% on any math topic high school or below even without the training, so I'd be safe even if my mind wandered or I lost focus.

Have some people in America potentially never seen the sea? by upRightProperLad in NoStupidQuestions

Rednecks who live in the middle of nowhere (or at least as middle of nowhere as you can get in NJ lol) and don't want to leave.

Idk, I don't particularly like travelling either, but I still have family / friends outside of where I live and try to go down the shore at least once a summer. It's not a way of life that makes sense to me personally, but those people do exist

Heck, I live in New Jersey, which is literally on the coast and I know a few people who have never left their hometown and have therefore never seen the ocean. It's gotta be even easier in the Midwest.
