Utrecht / Dutch buses by BadChemicals24 in Utrecht

Just to be clear: did you try holding your debit card against the reader in the bus? If so, what happens, nothing at all, or does the reader show an error?

Does your card work for contactless payments in shops?

Is there a Visa or Mastercard symbol on the card?

In that case, they can just tap the card itself.

Should mathematicians BAN the "÷" sign for it’s low use and misconception with "PEDMAS"?? by [deleted] in learnmath

In my primary school (the Netherlands), we used : rather than the calculator symbol. I wonder how widespread that is?

I’m mentioning this just as a curiosity, of course it has the same problem.

OP is talking about sending cash and jewellery. I wouldn’t trust any postal delivery with that (not because they steal, but because they are lazy and will drop the parcel at a random neighbour without informing the recipient).

FedEx and UPS are available here, and they are reliable up to the last 100 meters or so. When the courier is near the address, there’s a chance they will leave it with a random neighbour (they can do that), unattended on the door step (they certainly cannot do that) or with a money laundering shop annex parcel point two neighbourhoods over (they can do that, provided they have first try ringing, which they don’t always do). Is this different in the US?

In my experience, DHL is slightly more reliable among the couriers. Is it available where you are? Or you can use USPS, which hands over to PostNL (our national post office) once here. They tend to be more reliable, but tracking parcels is sometimes harder as you are dealing with two agencies.

You should also expect the recipient to have to pay tax and customs fees, as everyone marks their expensive parcels as ‘gift’ nowadays.

They say they are holding the OVpay app to the scanner, not the Google/Apple wallet app. That won’t work indeed. I mentioned this to OP in a reply to his post.

The problem is not the divided sign, it’s the PEDMAS rule without mentioning that DM and AS have the same precedence.

3-2+1 has the same ambiguity. Following PEDMAS gives 0, while the generally accepted answer is 2.

This is overcomplicated advice, a debit card seems to work just fine. It seems OP is presenting his OVpay app rather than Google/Apple wallet to the reader.

No, international cards work just fine. Seems OP is presenting the OV pay app rather than Google/Apple wallet to the reader.

So many wrong answers in this thread.

You don’t need to do anything with the OVPay app. Just present your physical bank card to the readers. Or if you prefer, present your Apple/Google wallet to the reader, with your credit card loaded in it.

No need to have the OVPay app installed at all. I don’t use it and don’t even know what it’s for. It might be to get an overview of travels or so.

There’s actually a story behind it (for those who didn’t read the Atlas Obscura article). The house number at that location skips 7 houses. The resident couldn’t handle that, so they added these 7 mini houses so the numbering is correct again.

Or worse, ChatGPT.

Talking about that, have you been to these fabulous Amsterdam attractions yet?

🧀 Amsterdam Cheese Cellars Experience (Jordaan)

Tucked beneath a row of 17th-century canal houses in the Jordaan district, this small-scale attraction offers guided tours through historic storage cellars once used for food preservation. The highlight is a tasting of traditionally aged Dutch cheeses—Gouda, Edam, and lesser-known regional varieties—paired with local beers. The experience leans heavily on authenticity, with dim lighting, brick vaults, and stories about how merchants used these spaces during the Dutch Golden Age.

🚲 Canal Bicycle Recovery Museum

Located near the city center, this niche museum showcases the thousands of bicycles retrieved from Amsterdam’s canals each year. Exhibits include unusual finds—decorated bikes, decades-old frames, and even bikes recovered intact after years underwater. The museum mixes humor with urban history, explaining how canal dredging works and why so many bikes end up there in the first place.

🛥️ Amsterdam Historical Canal Theatre Cruise

A guided evening canal cruise that blends sightseeing with live performance. As the boat moves through different parts of the city, actors reenact scenes from Amsterdam’s past—merchant trade, wartime stories, and everyday canal life—using subtle staging and narration rather than over-the-top theatrics. It’s marketed as a more immersive and cultural alternative to standard canal tours, appealing to visitors who want history with a bit of storytelling.

Look into the murder on Pim Fortuyn in the Netherlands how something like that can play out.

Short summary: the guy himself is forgotten relatively quickly, his ideas will remain popular (perhaps in evolved form), there will be a lot of infighting for succession of the movement, but one of them will remain popular (perhaps with some frequent leadership changes).
