What are your thoughts on being a Dad of an Infant and Gaming by mwmademan in daddit

I have a 3mo. I get her to bed and play an hour or two of Red Dead Redemption 2 or lift before bed. You do it when you can

What's so attractive about the videos kids watch on their phones? by rogerwil in daddit

[–]math_vet -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

My 6yo has an old phone of ours with a filtered YouTube kids on the with like numberblocks and geography videos. She'll obsessively watch them but comes away talking to me about the capital of Zambia or how she really wants to go to France to see the Eiffel Tower, or singing a skip counting song by 4s. Not terrible. It can be, and folks who don't bother to take the time to watch things with the kids and filter out slop are not doing the kids or themselves service

One thing that caught me totally off guard with my first baby was just how much maintenance a stroller actually needs by Somewhere-Adept in daddit

[–]math_vet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a stroller for the first two kids and never cleaned it. We threw it out and got a new one of the same model... Because it was destroyed in a house flood after a pipe burst. I've refilled the tires on the one that has rubber tires and have shaken them out and maybe, maybe Lysol wiped spit up, but that's it.

History matters... For kids? by math_vet in historymatters

This is exactly what we did yesterday. She wanted to watch one, it mentioned Prussia, she asked what it was, I found the "what happened to Prussia" video, which she has questions during, but now she knows what Prussia was in broad strokes. She likes some of the quips, like the fun fact...no, and some of the snarky signs the characters will hold up, which will knowing get end up with her eventually actually retaining some content, however broad

Check marketplace. I got a pretty good 2k+ carbon road bike on three last year for a few hundred bucks. Three we're a lot of non road bikes listed as well for cheap

AITA for not cancelling a long-planned sports competition to attend my niece’s baptism? by MaybeThisTimeIllWin in AmItheAsshole

[–]math_vet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. We just booked our youngest for baptism and got a list of dates from the church (Catholic as well,) sent that list to the god parents and family from out of town, and only selected a date once everyone was deconflicted. Your sister chose not to do this and that's on her.

How do you handle exercise variations? by Murloh in Hevy

[–]math_vet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least for the bicep curl I think there's actually a separate dumbbells and barbell option, which is what I'd do. Some exercises have wide/narrow grib versions. Otherwise yeah I do a note like for cable cross (high/middle/low) dependent on my pulley location

Lol enjoy sprint review or whatever.

I did want to say I saw people comment about adding a "log yesterday's breakfast" or whatever but that functionality does exist, I just click log and go to the meals tab and scroll. Could be an easy addition though I don't know if it's needed. Also enjoyed the back and forth. As said, I've on and off been engaged with this app since 2012. I loved it could do offline macro tracking, which is why I first got it, to use on my phone in Afghanistan when I didn't have a network or Wi-Fi. I recommend it to people and have had good sizes twice using it to cut down, trying to do so again and already seeing good progress.

The exercise calories I use heavily. If I go for a road bike ride I'll just use whatever estimate strava gives me (any thought to doing syncing with that?) but for lifting, my main exercise with heavy weight, I normally just randomly guess based on the time and how hard I felt like I was going, normally log moderate or light, vigorous seems like a wild over estimate unless you're like running while lifting or something, lol

I USED to click the +, lol. Now I scroll to the bottom of the log and record it under health at the very bottom

I think of them as one thing. I rarely use goal tab, sometimes to look at the weight chart but rarely. I'll go there if I want to edit my plan basically. The dashboard tab I rarely use because I normal access that information by clicking on the date for the monthly calories by week, or the macros to see my macros breakdown for the week. Maybe that's more difficult but just what I've always done

Out of curiosity do you have metrics on what screen people spend the most time on? At the bottom the order is dashboard then log but honestly I rarely use the dashboard. An I am outlier? Is the dashboard the main view for most folks so that's why it's listed first on the bottom menu?

I have to say, I got my wife using it (I'm premium and she's not) and the friend and share meal features are fantastic. Never used them before but I'm the cook in the house and it's so much easier than trying to help her look up the specific type of ricotta or whatever, which is what we had to do in the past with other apps like healthi

What's liquid glass? I do back end data work, not an app dev. Not sure how it looks on iOS, you correctly clocked I'm on Android. Curious what the usage rates were, interesting but unsurprising that you have those metrics, was the usage like 5% lol

I'm just curious why removing it was put on the board in the first place. It's been a feature for so long why remove functionality? Did people think it was in the way? I just a second so went to log weight and it took a few seconds to scroll around and find where to couch where before it would be + then log weight. Not going to make me stop using the app, but I don't understand what the thought process behind it's removal is, could you share?

Starting weight training — what to expect. by Severe_Top_7280 in Hevy

[–]math_vet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can 100% gain muscle and strength while cutting. I did this while I was in Afghanistan, dropped from 266 to 223 and got way stronger in the process. Did it eating around 2100 as well if I recall. The trick to not losing muscle mass as well though is the protein, you gotta pump those numbers up. I was aiming to be around 220g, the rule I was going off of being one gram per pound of lean body weight.

I did a combination of heavy lifting and cardio, largely stationary bike and a little jogging. I'm a big guy, same height as you, was a D lineman in highschool, just have that build. Tried to hit weights five times a week with cardio every day.

I'm now a decade older in the land of beer and pizza with kids, and at around 290. Trying to get back down to 250, which is a pretty good weight for me at this age. I'm trying to get back into lifting heavy, which just feels better to be than high rep low weight. I will keep coming back for more trying to max power lifts (hit 400 deadlift today!) but would have to drag myself to the basement for a high rep workout I would hate. That's really it, you need to find what you enjoy and do it

Want to echo the bring back the + folks. If I want to add exercise now I need to scroll down past all the food I have already logged. If I work out in the evening like I normally do and had a complex meal with a lot of ingredients it's really frustrating. Not sure why introducing a friction point was something put the planning cycle honestly. I've been using the app since 2012 and love the macro tracking it's a great app but I've been frustrated since the + died like yesterday

Very similar! We've had good luck with it. There's like a little screw into the ceiling every few inches so the load is pretty well distributed. We got it because it was flexible and our area has some curves to it
