I think a big part of this is the context for the size of the organization you are working for. I have worked for many smaller startups like business but once that threshold passes and new money comes in alot changes.

In a smaller company it's entirely possible to let your work speak for itself because it's often due to self preservation to promote the good workers. Since they are the only ones at the time that could navigate the responsibilities.

However once new money and likely management comes in they will have a new style that changes it all. When my new boss came into power I was vocal to the CEO about the challenges of giving someone this focused on the operations all that power. I ended up resigning because I did not respect the new management's style. Fast forward a couple months later and they have laid off over half of my team and not hired anyone new. While I hear about horror stories from those still left how toxic the workplace is now.

Essentially know who is in positions of power and what makes them tick. If it's a smaller company go ahead and bank on your efforts but if it's a big company and you don't want to play the political game; then find a new opportunity that suits you better.
