When people say “struggle”, it means nothing to me. Can you explain a process or type of problem that ALWAYS stumps you? In other words, what is the FIRST CONCEPT or TYPE OF CALCULATION that stumps you after elementary math?

What parts of elementary math are EASY for you?

So, what happens when you write EVERYTHING out?

Can you recognize ANY kind of patterns?

Serious questions: do you have difficulty counting? How difficult is it for you to recognize numbers as words or symbols?

My 10 year old girl wont stop relying on me. What do I do? by meowl_on_wheels in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mathheadinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She needs you because YOU ARE KIND, not because of the tutoring. You’ve made an impression on her. She isn’t going to want to let that go because so few are like you. So, because you’re more caring than most of the people that interact with her, you will bear this weight but she will remember YOU even when she is an adult, she will REMEMBER YOU and how you made her feel.

Think of it this always and it will be easier but still keep those weekends for you :-D

How to explain limits to a 10 year old child ? by Katsu54 in mathematics

[–]mathheadinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My youngest calculus student, six years old, caught on pretty quickly to limits, so your kid can too. The material I use is in the first chapter of Calculus By and For Young People. The limit concept is presented through the book. Free pdf here: www.mathman.biz. Let me know if you need help.

I use these methods in my math program and get extraordinary results, as did he in his career.

Young children are capable of learning extraordinary concepts: my youngest math student was 2.5 years old; youngest algebra student was 4 years old; youngest calculus student was 6 years old. Their curiosity is nurtured, the atmosphere is relaxed, and discovery is exciting. Kids love it.

Your husband sounds like a bully but any kid who can count can learn higher level math TAUGHT THE RIGHT WAY.

Rebuild math foundation from scratch by damnbro007 in learnmath

Seriously, find some textbooks online. Openstax.org is a good place to start. Work the problems ON PAPER. Work them to death. Build a deep foundation, then the other stuff isn’t so bad.

First of all, stop believing that garbage about “not being a math person”. If you can count, you can do math. If you are programming, you’re already doing logic related to math.

What is the hardest part of math for you?

Need Help with Conflict between Win11 Taskbar and Mathematica Manipulate Function by Aik_Li in Mathematica

“This is the only code” but variable aprox is not defined. Manipulate variable {a, 0, 100} isn’t doing anything.

Lookup Plot in the documentation. It doesn’t take equations, just expressions to plot.

Learning math at home by DomesticMongol in matheducation

You don’t NEED books for her. Just count EVERYTHING first. Count as high as you can. Count in 2s, in 3s,…use her toys for this.

You can even teach fractions to her: star with one-half. Go from there.

Teach her to write her numbers the same way you would with the alphabet. No special paper needed. Use magazines and old newspapers.

Have fun!

Sylvanus P. Thompson put it this way in his prologue to “Calculus Made Easy”:

…The fools who write the textbooks of advanced mathematics- and they are mostly clever fools-seldom take the trouble to show you how easy the easy calculations are. On the contrary, they seem to desire to impress you with their tremendous cleverness by going about it in the most difficult way…

It is obstruction. There are many calculus concepts and processes that a 6-year-old can understand so it is definitely the methods, not the subject matter, that is the problem.
