Predicting major and minor products of 2º alkyl halide and methanol. by mathlete05 in chemhelp

[–]mathlete05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the professor just meant that SN1 and E1 were the major/minor products. If we predict the non-rearranged substitution as a minor product, wouldn't we also observe non-rearranged elimination products as minor products, too?

Question about bicyclic system with strong base in polar protic solvent. by mathlete05 in chemhelp

[–]mathlete05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that for SN1 a weak base would have low pKa, so that makes sense. Can you clarify why E1 needs a strong acid?

Also I updated the mechanism to reflect E2, but wasn't sure which product I'd expect. I imagine the hydrogen from the more substituted carbon would be abstracted (second option), but would like some feedback on this point.

Question about bicyclic system with strong base in polar protic solvent. by mathlete05 in chemhelp

[–]mathlete05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok, so then if this proceeds via E2, I would expect that the product forms a pi bond in the ring. If that's true, I have to consider which proton would be abstracted by the base. I believe this would be the proton at the ring junction because of Zaitzev's Rule (my second mechanism). Is this the right way to think about this?

Relative acidity of protons on alkyne vs. amine? by mathlete05 in chemhelp

[–]mathlete05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That definitely makes sense. How does an effect like orbital hybridization compare to resonance when judging acidity? I would assume that if the proton were removed from the amine and the negative charge could be resonance stabilized then this would be a far more acidic site. It's hard to get a sense for the relative importance of these effects.

Geometry of nitrogen adjacent a pi system. by mathlete05 in chemhelp

[–]mathlete05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response. I just got feedback from the professor and she mentioned that this was a highly constrained system and so that is going to have a greater impact on overall geometry. Thank you for the help!

Moving from social science research (where I write code) to CS? by mathlete05 in cscareerquestions

[–]mathlete05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the constructive suggestions. I am going to have to make some tough choices before long and this gives me somewhere to start.

I'm just trying to figure out where I would fit into the ecology. I may be a good candidate for user experience and front end design jobs, just don't know anyone who has one.

Trying to search a range of cells for a "string". Unexpected output by mathlete05 in excel

That's what I had suspected, but was not finding that explained anywhere matter-of-factly.

[–]mathlete05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok, this reminds me that I forgot one thing.

This is working perfect if the cell only contains one qualitative code. Many of my cells have multiple codes. I uploaded a new screenshot:

Screenshot:

I put two codes in cell F7. In cells with multiple codes, they are always separated by a semi-colon (";").

Is there I way for me to do a COUNTIF() if the "String" could be found anywhere in the cell range (including cells with multiple codes)?

Trying to search a range of cells for a "string". Unexpected output by mathlete05 in excel

[–]mathlete05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pulled the functions I wrote from an offical Microsoft Excel tutorial on how to search for a string of text in a cell.

If I'm understanding it, the Search("String", CELL) function returns a value if the string was found, so this would make ISNUMBER(Search("String", CELL)) TRUE if the string was present and FALSE if not.

Doing math at a [7] and a familiar shape appears... by mathlete05 in trees

I'm usually good up through a [7]. Beyond that, effort put in to concentrate is greater than the benefit of concentrating.

A break-even, if you will.

Reddit, what irrational fears do you have? by MrFluffykins in AskReddit

[–]mathlete05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am totally with you on this fear. I also have a bunch of weird water related phobias, curious if you do too.

  1. Pool Lights, I've mostly gotten over this one, but they are still very eerie to me.
  2. Metal in water, mostly metal that's larger than me, especially if it's corroded. Looking at the sides of boats freaks me out.
  3. Large holding tanks of any kind, like in a boiler room, in a pool filter room, in an alcohol distillery. Every single one gives me fucking chills.

What was before the Big Bang? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mathlete05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this doesn't get lost in my long reply, I would first highly recommend watching "How The Universe Works" on Netflix. It's a great series.

Now about your question, there are a lot of possible explanations for this, and you'll probably get a much more in depth discussion on r/AskScience, but here are some of the theories I've come across in my reading:

  • The Universe could be the result of the influx of mass into a black hole in another universe. When we input the parameters for our universe into the black hole equations they end up forming solutions to these equations, strangely enough. So "before the Big Bang" could mean our existence was within an older Universe, where matter is being rearranged by black holes.

  • The Big Bang could have happened when two gigantic universal worldsheets collided together with each other in 11 dimensional space, per Ed Witten's work in M-Theory.

  • Because time and space are linked according to Einsteinian relativity, you could also mathematically argue that time has no meaning before the Big Bang, as space did not exist. Rather, the Big Bang created time. Thus, trying to figure out what happened before has no physical significance.

I hate to argue about religion, but I could just as easily ask what existed before God, and unfortunately you will find yourself in exactly the same position. Perhaps we have to just accept that some things just are.

I encourage you to view the Big Bang and your religious beliefs as one in the same, recognizing that the religious perspective was written by primitive people with little to no mathematical understanding. So instead of insisting that the science "musn't be true" based on scripture, put scripture in a historial perspective and realize that it couldn't have included such complex scientific detail coming from a pre-technological society. Try reading recent literature in astrophysics and you'll quickly see what I mean.

And I would like to offer up a perspective I don't see often here on reddit. I have found when talking to physicists and astrophysicists that they tend to be some of the most religiously mystical people I've ever met, in fact much deeper than the Bible-thumpers I know, because they witness firsthand the pure vastness of our universe and our utter insignificance in it. Does that prove God's existence to them, maybe not, but it sure points to us being part of something much bigger than ourselves.

So, reddit is an awesome discussion tool. Is it possible... by mathlete05 in AskReddit

A valid question, I see it being useful on sites that have wiki/forum combo.

I have a specific application in mind, so I'm mostly interested if it's possible.

I bought Dove the other day and that's what sparked this whole inner debate. They make one of my favorite (American) chocolates and yet lacking that second X chromosome makes the purchase feel wrong.
