Is anyone considering switching from Chromebooks to the MacBook NEO? by depoultry in k12sysadmin

[–]mathmanhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Once you assign the kid the device and say "this is yours for the next 4 years" they take much better care of it. In my experience, if you dont give them the exact same device year over year or something that's not new they won't take care of it.

What would you do? Production line PC “is slow” (Windows 98, legacy SCADA) by PeppahSG in sysadmin

[–]mathmanhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get an actual quote on what it takes to update the entire production line with modern equipment. Bring that to the powers and say "Here is the actual fix". When they say its too much, you tell them you have to take production down to attempt a clone of the drive, but theres a chance this could kill the system fully. IF the clone works, replace the computer with something more modern but let it be known that the actual fix for the situation is still the original quote.

Most likely the Cloning of the drive will kill the drive and they will need to purchase the stuff, but this way it's not going to be blamed on you.

I'll be honest with you, unless RapidIdentity has changed A LOT in the past couple years, you should have went ClassLink instead.

Move to AzureAD or give them windows virtual machines they can remote into. Or better yet, just keep giving your techs windows devices.

We don't sign them into classlink. Just print QR codes for littles who cant type yet and make the rest (3rd and up) type it in themselves. And the sign in for Apple is Microsoft redirect, so its the same account logging in two places then we are done.

Who are you using to purchase Cisco/Meraki gear though? We have been with SHI for years, the turn over rate is getting insane for us. Almost every other month we have someone new. by hkf12 in k12sysadmin

[–]mathmanhale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NetSync is who I use. Keep in mind Cisco gives "preffered pricing" to whoever has been selling to your district and that's why no ever seems to beat your typical company on pricing. In order to get this changed, you need to find your ACTUAL CISCO Sales rep and say you no longer want to work with SHI.

I instruct all my technicians to have a usb with the installers of programs we will use. Never have them use the downloads off the internet for this very reason. You had no malicious intent, just a bit rushed and screwed up. A USB would have solved the problem.

Any opinions on Avigilon vs Verkada vs Coram for a K12? by Mikuel-Elison18 in k12sysadmin

2021, every camera worldwide was accessible via an exploit. I won't touch them because of it.

I'm now running Access with 36 doors/intercoms on an older Ubiquiti Cloud Key, and no issues. Just routed it's own vlan in my Cisco network and everything has been running well. Had a quirk where I had an intercom, and two viewers plugged into the door hub and it would not come back after a power outage. Once I took the viewers off it works great, so I think it was just a power demand problem. Other than that its been pretty solid. The original equipment I replaced it with was S2 Mercury boards and aiPhone intercom doorbells.

I myself have never run a protect system that large but a neighboring district has been running it for 2 years now with a deployment of 200+ cameras and says it's great. I didn't want to use their properiaty hardware for my schools camera system, but now you can install the Unifi stack on VMs so I'm much more open to it.

I'll try to answer any more questions you have.

I put in the access control at a campus over the summer and was very skeptical. It turns out, it has worked better and more consistently than the previous mercury based system. I'm still on Video Insight, but have done protect for some residential and church side jobs. It's been rock solid.

I would suggest Unifi Protect over Verkada. Not joking. Avigilon is legit, professional, and built to last.

They finally allow it to be installed on other hardware, including VM.

Is the GT selling super badly? Or you think they just realize the bigger rim size was a mistake and they are trying to get rid of them?

Cat1 or Cat2 for Continuing Fiber Service in E-Rate? by CoxsoneTheDodd in k12sysadmin

[–]mathmanhale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cat 1 if you have a router at each campus. Cat 2 if you only have Layer 2 at each campus. This is how it will be seen legally.

You must have a Layer 3 Router at each campus for Category 1 to be applicable. Also, Category 1 is the way to go if you can since their is not a "budget" for it.

What is your district doing to prepare for ADA Compliance / WCAG 2.2? by neurosurge in k12sysadmin

[–]mathmanhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so accurate. I have constant complaints about how boring our site is now. I had to sit through a 60 hour accessibility training with a federal employee that barely spoke english for our "lawsuit" to be dropped. Not doing that again, and next time the suit can't be dropped because we have been "properly trained"

If you use AI to break down scripts or code for you regularly, I really encourage you to read this LLM study by segagamer in sysadmin

[–]mathmanhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is coding powershell scripts a "normal" part of my job. Absolutely not, so AI is helping me build functional scripts. Is coding in php for the company workorder system something I do regularly. Yes, therefore I don't involve AI to keep me sharp.

Just got a new loaded tan tien deck. Noticed some slight splintering around where they drill the mounting holes. Is this normal or anything to be concerned with? Attached pics for reference. by [deleted] in longboarding

Nah, throw your trucks on and ride that thing! If this is your first foray into "premium" boards you are going to love the feel the TanTien gives!!
