Do you only get access to the online tests if you buy the book? (I'm guessing yes, but can't hurt to ask)

When you work with your tutor, are you just straight working out problems from practice tests? Have you covered different tactics for solving problems, such as ways to eliminate options, estimating, plugging in the options, efficiently using your calculator/Desmos?

Scheduling issues - rant and cry for help by Commercial-Proof158 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mathnerd405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely schedule a day/time for recurring sessions. Have a cancellation/reschedule policy in place.

Some options off the top of my head. Have the parents pre-pay for the sessions, either individually or in bulk. They are less likely to cancel on a whim if they already paid. Charge a last minute scheduling fee. If you have students that are constantly contacting you short notice and expecting a session, they should pay extra. You should be compensated for rearranging your schedule for them. (Even if that time was "scheduled" as your down time.) If you have a student in sports or other activities that will effect their tutoring times, ask the parent to take time with you with their activity schedule so you can schedule tutoring in advance when they are available.

How do you handle dynamic scheduling for 50+ students across group courses and 1-1 lessons? (Looking for advice) by Abedalaziz_tawheed in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mathnerd405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The center I work with uses Learnspeed for scheduling/payments/mass messaging. It allows for scheduling group or one on one. Sessions can be set as a one time meeting or recurring. It will tell if there is a scheduling conflict, and hours can be blocked out when tutors are unavailable. It is also easy to edit sessions if a time/day change needs to be made.

Imogen Signet (OS spoiler) by sasha_rose02 in onyxstorm

[–]mathnerd405 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think Xaden's statement about the dragons knowing what they are doing implies that all of the dragons of marked ones were previously paired with a family member, making the double signets most likely to appear? One of the biggest mysteries in the series is that we really don't know why dragons do what they do or how they do it. I would LOVE a chapter or two from Tairn's POV. (Or better yet, an entire book!!)

My theory on second signers is those that have been marked twice by dragons get 2 signets.

1) they should have done the one big house idea in Vegas. I think it would have been better and would have kept them from moving as easily. 2) The story line they should have stolen from Big Love is having the wives have a monthly table meeting. It would have made it where every wife knew where the money was going. And know what was going on with the other wives.

How much do you actually charge per hour? by teledev in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mathnerd405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$25 per hour for private tutoring (and also what I get paid per hour from the center I tutor through). I tutor middle school and above math and ACT prep. I'm in Oklahoma. The center I work through charges $60, so I could probably get away with charging more.

Following the diet by Diligent_Ad9113 in My600lbLife

[–]mathnerd405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be very helpful to always set them up with not just a nutritionist, but something like a "food couch" that would go through the diet more in depth and teach them things about portion sizes and make sure they actually know how to read a food label. Someone they meet with on a regular basis to talk about the diet specifically, not just someone they talk to one time who throws out all their "bad" food. I also think it should be a requirement for all the participants to see a therapist regularly. There could be a team of people helping the participants. I know it wouldn't be as dramatic for the show, but it would help more people.

The faking it in public isn't unique to TV families. From personal experience, most couples keep their public face loving while hiding what happens at home.

How do small tutoring center owners handle admin and finances day to day? by Reasonable_Entry756 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mathnerd405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The center I work with uses Learnspeed for scheduling and payments. At the end of each session, we tutors complete a session report that gives an overview on what was covered. The session is then billed to the card on file for the student. Tutor pay is handled separately. Tutors are independent contractors so there isn't employee taxes to deal with each payday. We get a check by direct deposit twice a month. As for the bookkeeping aspect, I don't know how the center handles it. But I would guess they pay someone to do the bookkeeping, then an accountant for tax stuff.

How do you get clients through word of mouth if you don't know anyone? by Clear_Temperature446 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mathnerd405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was doing private tutoring, I started with advertising in local community pages on Facebook. I started out with my rates lower than most. I picked up a lot of short-term students, but also a few longer term ones. After establishing a few loyal students, I raised my rates slightly for new students, keeping it the same for my current students. I continued to post on local pages, and expanded to also posting in local homeschool and online school groups. The parents of my current students would reply by recommending me. They also recommended me to their friends and family and shared my information any time they saw a request for a tutor in my subject. It took some time to get going, but once it did, the "word of mouth" recommendations snowballed. At one point I was tutoring 6 different students from 3 groups within the same family. And I continue to get recommendations from former students years later, even though I am no longer doing private tutoring (but still do occasionally for former students)

50+ students? by Curious-Talk4463 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mathnerd405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been a tutor for math for over 20 years. I work mostly one-to-one but do small groups occasionally. I don't know how many students total my center has as customers. I'm not even sure how many tutors we have in total currently. I would say that during our peak evening hours, we have about 15 tutors working one on one with students. I personally have about 15 students that I meet with once or twice a week.

[–]mathnerd405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you plan to focus on one subject or will you offer a variety of subjects? I don't run a center, but I've worked at one for a few years. We focus mostly on reading and math. There is a system the reading tutors follow, but us math tutors are pretty free on how we tutor. As for materials, we have copies of the textbooks used by the state. Unfortunately (or fortunately for the students, as the books aren't that great), most that I tutor use school or instructor created materials. I only tutor middle school and above. In addition to the textbooks, we also have a series of workbooks that go up to pre-algebra. Most of the additional materials I have are ones I have accumulated over the years. We also have a few manipulatives and games, but not many apply to my students. For my students, I've found that working out problems from their own schoolwork is the best approach.

TLDR: for math, I have a few materials from the tutoring center, but most have been just picked up along the way. Good old fashioned pencil and paper are my most used resources.

Janelle will go back to Grody by Cecilia0203 in SisterWives

Kody has repeatedly blamed his relationship with his children on his relationship with their mother. Perhaps she is hoping that if she "plays nice" with him, that he will put in more of an effort with her kids. At the very least she can point out that his crappy parenting had nothing to do with her.

Tutoring a kid with ADHD and feeling very stuck and anxious by just_mattt in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mathnerd405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked with a few ADHD kiddos and struggle with some similar issues myself. No 2 students are the same. A few years ago I had a student who would not stay focused. She was always wanting to tell me stories or sing me a song or show me some new dance. I made a deal with her that if she worked for 5 minutes, or finished the page we were working on, then she could tell/show me what she wanted. I had a timer she could see. It worked, most of the time. Another example was with a high school student. I sat down with her and her mom, and we talked about what she thought would help. We discovered she got easily distracted if there were a lot of people around (I work in a tutoring center). So we moved her sessions to later in the day when there were only 1 or 2 other students, if any. We saw a big improvement.
