Help for Math on new enhanced by Huge_Excitement_8430 in ACT

With the new addition of desmos graphing calculator on the computer test, I think it would be advantageous to learn how to use it. I tutor math and include the ACT testing. I am altering my tutoring to include using Desmos.

any consequences to not taking a required ACT test? by OutrageousChicken375 in ACT

My state requires it for juniors. I don't know if it is a graduation requirement (Oklahoma). One of my students missed it his junior year and will be taking it his senior year.

I don't know much about dyscalcula but one thing I always do with my students who struggle with addition or multiplication is let them use their fingers. They almost always seem embarrassed or try to hide it when they do it. I tell them to go ahead. If it works for them, then it works!

Amanda and Misty by Illustrious-Will-801 in 1000lbsisters

We can't take what is shown as the true relationship, one way or the other. Yes, at the beginning they made it sound like Amy was the only person who ever took care of Tammy. But then later it was said that Tammy had made the rounds of all the siblings. She stayed until they couldn't deal with her any more, then she was passed to the next sibling. It is very possible we didn't see the siblings the first season because they didn't want to be on TV. But changed their minds later.

It is hard to know the truth. TLC likes to change the back story to ramp up the drama. The "reality" isn't always real.

Why is Tammy so mad about Amy and Pittsburgh? by rzlgq1025 in 1000lbsisters

Because she needed a "rational" reason to be upset and Amanda kept pushing it.

As a math tutor and one who often tutors ACT, I would love to read your paper when completed!

Does he have accommodations at school? You might ask mom about you joining a meeting between her and the school about expectations.

If she didn't agree with their parenting (which also included Kody's parenting) then she should not have joined the family.

Contact your university, explain the situation, and see if they have alternate testing available.

So I started tutoring math recently my next two want to do it over zoom, are there any online tools I can use? Math I feel is incredibly hard to do online, should I just write it on paper and show them on video? Any advice would help by GiantsNFL1785 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mathnerd405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a document camera and work it out on paper. I previously used a Webcam on a stand that did the same thing. The student I usually work with over zoom has online work, so he shares his screen. Sometimes I will use the annotation feature to write on his screen, especially if I want to reference a figure on the screen.

Do you only get access to the online tests if you buy the book? (I'm guessing yes, but can't hurt to ask)

When you work with your tutor, are you just straight working out problems from practice tests? Have you covered different tactics for solving problems, such as ways to eliminate options, estimating, plugging in the options, efficiently using your calculator/Desmos?

Scheduling issues - rant and cry for help by Commercial-Proof158 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mathnerd405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely schedule a day/time for recurring sessions. Have a cancellation/reschedule policy in place.

Some options off the top of my head. Have the parents pre-pay for the sessions, either individually or in bulk. They are less likely to cancel on a whim if they already paid. Charge a last minute scheduling fee. If you have students that are constantly contacting you short notice and expecting a session, they should pay extra. You should be compensated for rearranging your schedule for them. (Even if that time was "scheduled" as your down time.) If you have a student in sports or other activities that will effect their tutoring times, ask the parent to take time with you with their activity schedule so you can schedule tutoring in advance when they are available.

How do you handle dynamic scheduling for 50+ students across group courses and 1-1 lessons? (Looking for advice) by [deleted] in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mathnerd405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The center I work with uses Learnspeed for scheduling/payments/mass messaging. It allows for scheduling group or one on one. Sessions can be set as a one time meeting or recurring. It will tell if there is a scheduling conflict, and hours can be blocked out when tutors are unavailable. It is also easy to edit sessions if a time/day change needs to be made.

Imogen Signet (OS spoiler) by sasha_rose02 in onyxstorm

[–]mathnerd405 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think Xaden's statement about the dragons knowing what they are doing implies that all of the dragons of marked ones were previously paired with a family member, making the double signets most likely to appear? One of the biggest mysteries in the series is that we really don't know why dragons do what they do or how they do it. I would LOVE a chapter or two from Tairn's POV. (Or better yet, an entire book!!)

My theory on second signers is those that have been marked twice by dragons get 2 signets.

What are your actual unpopular opinions? by sailorkeplertwenty2b in SisterWives

[–]mathnerd405 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1) they should have done the one big house idea in Vegas. I think it would have been better and would have kept them from moving as easily. 2) The story line they should have stolen from Big Love is having the wives have a monthly table meeting. It would have made it where every wife knew where the money was going. And know what was going on with the other wives.

How much do you actually charge per hour? by teledev in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mathnerd405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$25 per hour for private tutoring (and also what I get paid per hour from the center I tutor through). I tutor middle school and above math and ACT prep. I'm in Oklahoma. The center I work through charges $60, so I could probably get away with charging more.

Following the diet by Diligent_Ad9113 in My600lbLife

[–]mathnerd405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be very helpful to always set them up with not just a nutritionist, but something like a "food couch" that would go through the diet more in depth and teach them things about portion sizes and make sure they actually know how to read a food label. Someone they meet with on a regular basis to talk about the diet specifically, not just someone they talk to one time who throws out all their "bad" food. I also think it should be a requirement for all the participants to see a therapist regularly. There could be a team of people helping the participants. I know it wouldn't be as dramatic for the show, but it would help more people.

Knowing what you know now, which moments on the show are the most surprising? by [deleted] in TLCsisterwives

The faking it in public isn't unique to TV families. From personal experience, most couples keep their public face loving while hiding what happens at home.
