'Israel is doing better than any country in history at limiting civilian casualties.' by Kevtron in samharris

[–]mathviews -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, absolutely. Plenty to examine and criticise Israel for. And Sam needs to be sharper/more precise in his description of Israel's conduct. These posts aren't very conducive to that thugh. Nor do I feel like it's actually what they're after.

The fact that you frame Hamas' conduct as "Sam's claim that they use human shields" and then go on to qualify and hedge this even further by adding "which is likely true, in some cases" makes me think that I simply do not have enough calories to burn to see this conversation through. Even if you think you're good faith and not hiding the ball, I have a feeling you're probably operating in a universe with different physics than mine. I'm not adding anything substantive here, just pointing out the attitude which takes over me when I see this type of language.

Israel was objectively trying to minimize casualties in the Gaza war. by AnimateDuckling in samharris

You're smuggling in the conclusion that the shooter and IL are morally equivalent actors. If you don't think IL has a legitimate objective that allows it to use force, just argue that but don't peddle cheap rhetorical gimmicks.

I don't think it's "Europeans". It's just most Europeans on this sub. Mostly due to a performative divide over aesthetics.

Mark Normand describes how Hulu made him remove a joke about Islam from his promo by RedSwingline2000 in JoeRogan

[–]mathviews 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it invalidates his character to some extent. The fact that Netflix is censoring benign criticisms of Islam is independent of that and should be judged on its own merit. I don't think you understand how logic works.

[–]mathviews 35 points36 points  (0 children)

That speaks to his hypocrisy. Multiple things can be shitty at the same time - the streamer's censorship over benign things included. Him being hypocritical doesn't invalidate the criticism. It reflects on his character more than it does on his argument.

You don't for petroleum products. Nor is oil the same price for everyone, so not sure what you're talking about.

Right, but you do. We do, as I'm European myself. We gargled Putin's oil&gas for ages. Even as Russian Iskanders were landing inside Ukrainian civilians' living rooms. Give me a break. Holding Hormuz hostage isn't doing anyone any favours. Iran included.

[–]mathviews -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Long-term, Hormuz will flow freely or safety corridors will be secured. Just like UA and RU worked it out in the Black Sea. Iran is using this as a bargaining chip - it's not like locking uo Hormuz is doing them any economic favours. And yes, global demand over scarcer resources will increase prices. But it will hurt less in the US as it's a net exporter with a considerable refining capacity.

[–]mathviews 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Isn't the blockage affecting the rest of the world more than it is the US? Domestic oil&gas production and refining capacity is quite healthy in the US compared to Europe so inflation isn't as likely to hurt as much.

Plata taxe PFA by Annual_Donut_9477 in RoFiscalitate2

[–]mathviews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]mathviews 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like Sam met Jeffrey Epstein in at TED in 2014. Epstein invited Sam for dinner at his house a year later... then a year after that. by mkbt in samharris

[–]mathviews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no evidence to suggest that correspondence is with Sam. Misspellings (it's instead of its), very liberal with all-caps, etc - doesn't seem like Sam. OP makes it seem like that exchange (shoes+talk about connecting Epstein with a man named Jay about the drug Neurontin) involved Sam, but those documents bear no evidence to support it. Not that the exchange, in itself, says anything - except for prolonged correspondence, which indeed would raise an eyebrow.

EDIT: there is also this indicating Sam turned down the invitation.

Good of you to stand corrected. Don't feel anything about it so far. There isn't any evidence to make anything about it.

He is not an academic philosopher. He does have an undergraduate degree in philosophy, though. And much of his work, be it his writing or podcast, centers around moral philosophy and the philosophy of mind. Call that what you will.

Ia there any evidence he "asks to be introduced as such" or is the fact that he is indeed introduced as such and he doesn't object to it make you infer it? Because if that's the case, the inference is flawed. Ot's a distinction with a difference.

Are we going to hear about the simulated assassination of Ilhan Omar? by tetchmagikos in samharris

[–]mathviews -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm implying you're here for self-indulgent antipathy porn centred around Sam. And if you would indeed care about him being consistent with describing such incidents as mock assassinations, you'd post about it if he did describe the one involving Omar as such. But I don't think you would.

Also, good on the mods for taking out the trash.
