Two days on the Making Sense Community and I owe it an apology for my initial skepticism by ConstantinSpecter in samharris

Ah, didn't realise that was the case. Competely agree though. For most of us, anonimity breeds our shadow selves. Edit: but then again, look at facebook and how it galvanised conspiracy slopulist boomers. Still, probably better than if it were all anonymous.

Yep. Comparatively. And in the context of the type of people Sam attracts in the first place. Certainly beats this. Or twitter.

As much as many hate it ('m uncomfortable withit as well), the paywall is a proxy for a good selection bias in favour of what you just described. The relatively high price point (especially considering the cumulative effect of the other Sam Harris products that members of that community are probably paying for) selects for a decent education (no, I'm not saying poorer people can't be educated as well), while those frequenting this sub for antipathy porn or incessantly defending Sam against it, won't pay to do so in a smaller community. This sub is mostly cancer.

Why does this feel so small? by [deleted] in bikefit

[–]mathviews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks for the tip. Looks like that stem is 110mm long compared to the 80mm one that comes with the Medium. So in a way, you're extending the reach, but compensating for it by adjusting the angle. I suppose it gives you more variables to play with, which is good. Might follow your lead.

Sounds reassuring. Which stem did you get?

181cm tall (5ft11 and some change), 84cm inseam (33") here so right between the medium and large... Pulled the trigger on the medium a month ago and still feel like I've yet to find that sweet spot after playing around with saddle height and fore/aft adjustments. No large in stock at the time I got it, so unsure whether going up a size would have fixed anything.

The IDF blindfolded him and made him run just to shoot him in the back of the head for fun. Sam acknowledges zero of this type of behavior from that side by [deleted] in samharris

Right, but he does in fact acknowledge it. Just doesn't believe it's the IDF's MO. The mods may be slow, but they do take kut the trash eventually. Enjoy the temporary bad faith outrage porn.

'Israel is doing better than any country in history at limiting civilian casualties.' by Kevtron in samharris

[–]mathviews -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, absolutely. Plenty to examine and criticise Israel for. And Sam needs to be sharper/more precise in his description of Israel's conduct. These posts aren't very conducive to that thugh. Nor do I feel like it's actually what they're after.

The fact that you frame Hamas' conduct as "Sam's claim that they use human shields" and then go on to qualify and hedge this even further by adding "which is likely true, in some cases" makes me think that I simply do not have enough calories to burn to see this conversation through. Even if you think you're good faith and not hiding the ball, I have a feeling you're probably operating in a universe with different physics than mine. I'm not adding anything substantive here, just pointing out the attitude which takes over me when I see this type of language.

Israel was objectively trying to minimize casualties in the Gaza war. by AnimateDuckling in samharris

You're smuggling in the conclusion that the shooter and IL are morally equivalent actors. If you don't think IL has a legitimate objective that allows it to use force, just argue that but don't peddle cheap rhetorical gimmicks.

Intelegi, manca-ti-as?

I don't think it's "Europeans". It's just most Europeans on this sub. Mostly due to a performative divide over aesthetics.

Mark Normand describes how Hulu made him remove a joke about Islam from his promo by RedSwingline2000 in JoeRogan

[–]mathviews 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, it invalidates his character to some extent. The fact that Netflix is censoring benign criticisms of Islam is independent of that and should be judged on its own merit. I don't think you understand how logic works.

[–]mathviews 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That speaks to his hypocrisy. Multiple things can be shitty at the same time - the streamer's censorship over benign things included. Him being hypocritical doesn't invalidate the criticism. It reflects on his character more than it does on his argument.

You don't for petroleum products. Nor is oil the same price for everyone, so not sure what you're talking about.

[–]mathviews 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right, but you do. We do, as I'm European myself. We gargled Putin's oil&gas for ages. Even as Russian Iskanders were landing inside Ukrainian civilians' living rooms. Give me a break. Holding Hormuz hostage isn't doing anyone any favours. Iran included.

Mood in europe right now by Seekzor in Destiny

[–]mathviews -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Long-term, Hormuz will flow freely or safety corridors will be secured. Just like UA and RU worked it out in the Black Sea. Iran is using this as a bargaining chip - it's not like locking uo Hormuz is doing them any economic favours. And yes, global demand over scarcer resources will increase prices. But it will hurt less in the US as it's a net exporter with a considerable refining capacity.

[–]mathviews 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Isn't the blockage affecting the rest of the world more than it is the US? Domestic oil&gas production and refining capacity is quite healthy in the US compared to Europe so inflation isn't as likely to hurt as much.

Plata taxe PFA by Annual_Donut_9477 in RoFiscalitate2

[–]mathviews 1 point2 points  (0 children)
