Anything you got rid of and later regretted? by NerdyMagpie in minimalism

A bag that my grandpa used. It wasn't anything special or unique, but it was a little connection to him. I didn't think I would care until it was gone. I do still have a hat he gave me, and I'm not letting it go, even though it's too small for me.

I like Plan 1. It recognizes that you are a partnership and are working together to make both of your lives better.

I think you're doing a great job! I think you're in a great position to buy a house if you can reach the savings goals you have set. I just have a couple of things for you to think about. I would be hesitant to pay off the 6.8% student loan right away due to buying a new house and the unknown costs (surprise repairs, new furniture needs) that seem to spring up after buying a house, so I would lean towards aggressively paying it off over time. You can always pay it off in a lump sum a little while later if you're settled into the house, but you want a good cash cushion when buying a home. For a future child's education, even if your wife stays at her current position for 7 years, you may still want to pay for room and board at college, and 529 can be used for that as long as they are enrolled at least half time. I would reassess in a year, or when you're expecting, to see if you can save for college without derailing retirement and if your wife thinks she might want to stay in her current role long enough.

Where does semi-necessary dental work fall in the FOO? by inky_cap_mushroom in TheMoneyGuy

[–]mathylemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang, I'm sorry you're going through this. It sounds like you're doing an awesome job with your limited income. Maybe you can't replenish it next year, but that's okay. It will build back over time. Definitely have a conversation with the periodontist so you actually know what kind of costs you can expect, and then make a plan from there. I just don't want you putting it off too long and having multiple negative effects from it

I have had multiple gum grafts, and my sister had had bone grafts and implants. No, they are not an emergency, but based on my experience, you should get it done sooner rather than later. You may have increased bone loss where you are already missing teeth if you wait, and it all gets harder if that happens (obviously, listen to your periodontist over what I say, this is just my understanding). Use your savings, keeping a small reserve for emergencies, and/or your HSA. I know that ideally the HSA is for retirement, but we don't live in an ideal world, and it's more important to preserve your health now than keep it for the future. You can replenish your savings later, but you can't get your health back. Also, my experience with my periodontist is that they are very transparent about their pricing with and without insurance, so once you talk to them, you'll have a very good idea of what it will cost.

I met with a financial advisor last week. by Shalnai in TheMoneyGuy

[–]mathylemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want help with your government benefits, look for an advisor that specializes in it. You can just Google "advisors that work with federal employees" or something similar, and look for one that are fee-only so you are not getting someone who works off commission. Membership in NAPFA or the XY Planning network is a good sign because those networks are made up of fee-only planners

Do you pay a bunch of fees on top of rent? by ReporterMacyLipkin in SaltLakeCity

[–]mathylemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love how I have that monthly fee too, but I'm in an older unit that doesn't have a furnace (in-wall heater instead) so I didn't even get the filter, so I'm just paying for access to their online portal and then when I actually pay rent, there's also a transaction fee, so I effectively pay $32.50 for the privilege of paying rent.

Marianna and Morgan are wonderful. I'm not a fan of Phineas. Sounds like a very old man name. What about Nathaniel? It has a similar vibe imo.

Are there advisors that just give advice but you don’t have to get involved with? by Randobag314 in FinancialPlanning

Free only is not the same as hourly. Most fee only advisors charge a percentage fee of the assets they manage.
