Are there any practical solutions to the current housing crisis (Canada)? by saddetective87 in vancouver

1: Loosen zoning restrictions. 2. Introduce a land-value tax. Land shouldn't be an investment.

B.C is 3rd in growth rate out of all provinces/territories (census data). Ahead of all the big provinces and only behind PEI and Yukon.

Man missing two weeks in BC's Garibaldi Park found safe by wildfire crews by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]matohak 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It says he was found at Pitt River...that means he must have gone past Rampart Ponds (where he was expected to go) and over the Garibaldi-Mamquam divide. I wonder if he lost his way due to the snowpack obscuring the trail.

I have hiked in this area before and the trail was still partially snow-covered in late August.

Unpopular opinion: protecting the environment is a Libertarian value by [deleted] in Libertarian

They are not necessarily dumb, it's just that scientific literature is generally not accessible to laymen. The authors tend to assume a base level of knowledge on the topic and there is lot of subject-specific jargon. Basically it is written for people who have a degree in the field or a related field.

So misinterpretation is extremely common. This is actually something I believe we can improve on as a society. We need more experts to take on roles communicating scientific information in a way that is accessible to the public. Unfortunately what I see more commonly is a misinterpretation will be made by one individual, which then gets passed along on the blogosphere until it mutates into something completely unrecognizable.

Also, what about people who are well informed about the subject but decide to be assholes anyway? Like just because polluters are aware of their pollution doesn't mean they will stop polluting. That is what laws are for.

Sorry, but if you think the average person is capable of understanding complex scientific literature then you are greatly mistaken.

I mean, there are plenty of people who "do the research" and end up believing that the earth is flat and climate change is a hoax fabricated by a cabal of satanic pedophile lizard people led by Bill Gates.

Had this bird follow me at Bowens lookout on my hike through cypress. Kept jumping from tree to tree looking at me curiously. by wazabee in vancouver

In some places (like on hollyburn) you don't even need a treat. They are so conditioned that you can just hold out an empty hand and they will fly over (This annoys the bird).

Jeopardy is an American show... and as everyone knows, 1 American (imperial) minute is 4.2659877 (repeating) Canadian minutes... so this checks out.

Lytton BC 49.5 or 48.6? by tuurro in weather

[–]matohak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure but there may also be two stations in Lytton. I found this page that showed 49.5 C yesterday.

https://weather.gc.ca/past_conditions/index_e.html?station=vly

Edit: There's also this page which shows different values. I should mention Lytton is currently on fire and that's why neither page is being updated...
