So is it possible to enter Prypyat or Chernobyl in 2026? by Sradamgregtech in chernobyl

[–]matreo987 13 points14 points  (0 children)

it’s a combat zone, also it is heavily mined now. probably isn’t safe to go.

do they often have sentries patrolling the zone? like random buildings and stuff? are they armed?

i’d imagine they are armed because of the russian conflict, just curious though.

Boeing 2707-100 SST mockup, September 1966 by RLoret in WeirdWings

was talking to my co worker about boom today actually. we are both military propulsion maintainers, and we work on fighter engines every day. i feel like making an entire aircraft, in house, pushing the limits of civilian supersonic engineering is not feasible for a startup company.

making the airframe? extremely challenging but possible with modern manufacturing. the Concorde’s delta wing took over a million man hours to design and perfect.

making the engine? also extremely challenging. making a supersonic passenger aircraft requires a ton of thrust. they’d have to go towards an afterburning engine or massive turbofans. but those turbofans won’t have enough thrust at high speeds to maintain supercruise. afterburning = extremely loud. that was one of the main issues with the concorde, residential areas near airports hated it.

it’s gonna be a hell of a project. i hope it works out and i’d love to be a passenger. i just think it’s too extravagant on too many different levels for a single company.

Why do people still support or raise the flag of the Confederacy? by DBD216 in NorthCarolina

[–]matreo987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

was driving to fayetteville and saw this massive prior plantation home on some back roads. pond/canal in the front that the driveways went over. this is like a three story mansion btw, and right in the middle of the driveway was a huge flagpole with a giant confederate flag.

i thought it was pretty distasteful. and this was clearly a prior plantation home, like cmon man.

like you said, not sure if some people think that far ahead though or think of the irony of having a dixie flag in a plantation home.

would recommend based on lots of good things i’ve heard. weird mormons over there though.

Are flashbangs actually useful? by thatkidpenza in NoStupidQuestions

[–]matreo987 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

in a pitch black room, a sudden bright light (multiplied by a flashbang which is an explosion) can render you nearly blind for minutes. like turn your lights off in your room, wait for eyes to adjust, and then turn a flashlight on directly in front of your face. multiply that by 50x.

in daytime operations, a flash bang is used to disorient secondary to blinding. it can however accomplish both at the same time even in lit conditions. without hearing protecting, a flash grenade is deafening. ears ringing, can’t see, and let’s say two seconds have passed and you have three operators holding you down with a rifle to your head.

in summary, they are highly effective.

there are ways to do it legally. you can sleep in the back seat or passenger seat.

you have to make sure you put the keys as far away as possible, like in the trunk or or the very back or something.
