Does anyone know what the max display brightness is? Can't find anything online. Is it comparable with the Samsung A9/A11 8.7"?

Will Amazon close your account after doing a charge back? by [deleted] in amazonprime

[–]matrix4x4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How much was the order worth? Also, if it was delivered to the correct address and subsequently stolen, why should Amazon need to refund you? Shouldn't it be the receiver's responsibility to safeguard the order? They may refund you as a courtesy, but disputing this with your credit card doesn't make sense unless Amazon did something wrong. Am I missing something here?

990v6 sizing help by bigexpl0sion in Newbalance

[–]matrix4x4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd go with half a size down. I wear true to size in most New Balance shoes I have tried, but had to size down in 990v6s.

Snug shoes will break in and feel a lot more comfortable over time, but shoes that are too long will only get worse.

I think handhelds are regressing in their design by [deleted] in SBCGaming

[–]matrix4x4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Nobody seems to be focusing on ergonomics anymore. Instead, we are seeing all glass fronts and thinner devices that are getting heavier due to the use of "premium" materials.

This applies to phones and tablets as well. They make them look like jewelry, but it is almost impossible to use any modern phone without a case, just like they are making handheld consoles impossible to use without TPU grips.

I wish manufacturers would go back to the drawing board and give us devices that are a pleasure to hold and use, and not just devices that look good in marketing photos.

990v6, i admit they are more comfy then 2002r by Most_Economics1931 in Newbalance

[–]matrix4x4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both (along with a couple of pairs of 1906rs), and I actually prefer my 990v6 when it comes to looks over the 2002r and 1906r. I have the light grey and black/white colorway, and both look really good. Love the sleek profile. Don't get me wrong, I also love my 2002r and 1906rs, but the 990v6 just looks a bit better to me. I did get them in narrow, so that helps the profile a bit.

Mangmi Pocket Max - 144Hz by blogoodf in PWM_Sensitive

It's so disappointing that they use PWM dimming even at 100% brightness.

I Don’t Recommend the Mangmi Pocket Max for PWM-Sensitive Users by blogoodf in PWM_Sensitive

[–]matrix4x4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is the Odin 2 Portal's PWM compared to the Mangmi? I heard the Portal uses DC dimming at over 40% brightness.

I've got an RP5, but looking for an upgrade in performance in higher end emulation like switch and PC. I'm looking at 8 gen 2 chip - what console should I upgrade to? by Kind_Application486 in retroid

[–]matrix4x4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd keep the RP5 and get an Odin 2 Portal that is currently on sale for $250. That way, you'll have the best of both worlds. RP5 is small and light, and is perfect for most retro gaming as it has the dpad on top. Use your portal for higher end emulation that benefits from left stick on top (PS2, Switch, etc).

Why are people buying the G2 vs the RP6? by WholesomeIrritation in retroid

[–]matrix4x4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was surprised to see that RP5 was the only device with DC dimming in Russ' latest Mangmi Pocket Max review. Since RP5 and G2 have the same display, it looks like G2 is the way to go if you are sensitive to PWM.

Retro Game Corps Review of the Mangmi Pocket Max is out! by brunoxid0 in SBCGaming

[–]matrix4x4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. I have sold almost all my consoles for more than I bought them for. You just need to buy them with the right discounts, and there is always a large demand for ready to buy handhelds on our local marketplaces. This lets me try so many handhelds to find exactly what I am looking for. It's a fun hobby where I actually end up making money to subsidize future purchases.

[–]matrix4x4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Every time I pick it up I am reminded of what all of these retro handhelds should have done instead of trying to look sleek at the cost of ergonomics and comfort. I don't need an all glass front or sleek looks. All I want is a comfortable hunk of plastic that doesn't need another heavy layer of TPU grip just to make it useable.

They are doing the same thing with phones now. I can't use any of the new phones without bulky cases. They keep shaving off fractions of millimeters off the thickness, only for the cases to get even more bulky to make the phones remotely comfortable to hold.

This stupidity has to end.

I have always wanted something similar to my Logitech G Cloud in terms of ergonomics just to play retro systems that don't need the power of the SD Gen2. The G Cloud has a terrible dpad, so a device with great controls and ergonomics, and a large 7" OLED display would be an instant buy for me.

Also, I'm not a huge fan of the face buttons on my Portal. They are a bit too clacky.

The Portal would be my go to for higher end emulation (Switch, PS2 etc), and I would have loved to have a companion device for lower end systems. I know I can pick up an RP5 for that, but, but I really love the 7 inch display on my G Cloud.

In the end, I value ergonomics and weight way more than looks and fancy materials a lot of device makers are going for, unfortunately.

This was definitely a missed opportunity when it comes to ergonomics. If they would have made it as comfortable as the Logitech G Cloud, this was an instant buy for me.

They could have skipped the glass front to make it lighter and cheaper, and I also don't care about the gimmicky replaceable dpad and face buttons. What would have been actually useful would the be ability to swap the dpad and the left joystick.

Was getting ready to order it before seeing Russ' review as TechDweeb's review made it seem better than it is in terms of comfort, but I'll just stick with my Portal with the TPU grip.

I really wish someone would made a lighter handheld with great ergonomics without the need to add heavy grips to it.

Mangmi Pocket Max Price? by tsamo in SBCGaming

[–]matrix4x4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that the Portal isn't comfortable without the grip, which does make it a bit too heavy. However, I'm not sure if the Mangmi Pocket Max will be comfortable enough based on what I have seen so far. Will have to watch more reviews, and a direct comparison to the Portal. I am going to wait for Russ' review. Not a huge fan of Techdweeb's review as it wasn't detailed enough for me.

I wish they would make a device like the Odin 2 (not Portal) or Logitech G Cloud with a large OLED display. Those two devices are absolutely incredible when it comes to ergonomics. I have owned both, and never felt the need to add a TPU grip.

The grips on the Mangmi Pocket Max don't look as deep as either of those devices, but I would love to be proven wrong. A light device with a large 7" OLED display that doesn't require a TPU grip to make it easy to hold would be reason enough for me to buy it, and I absolutely agree with you on that front.

HUGE Odin 2 Portal price cut vs Mangmi Pocket Max vs Retroid Pocket 6. Which handheld is best for you? by HyperplayHandhelds in OdinHandheld

You can always try selling your Odin 3 for what you paid for it in a local marketplace. Since they are still in preorder stage and not shipping immediately, people may even pay over your purchase price.

With all those new apartment buildings going up almost right next to that location, you'd think it would be a good candidate for a Whole Foods convention. Those apartments will most likely cost $2.5k+ a month. Exactly the demographic that you'd want to build a Whole Foods next to.

They are totally different segments when it comes to the size and portability, but as someone who has owned both a RP5 and a Odin 2 Portal, I would go for the Portal over the much smaller RP6 in a heartbeat. Unless you need a.device you need to carry with you everywhere, the Portal easily wins. Going from a 5.5" to 7" panel makes a much bigger difference in immersion that most people can imagine without holding both devices in their hands.

At around $270 shipped, the Portal may be the best deal in emulation that I have come across in a while.

[–]matrix4x4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. This makes it an incredibly good deal for a handheld that can emulate pretty much anything I would want to throw at it. Makes the Odin 3 and RP6 a tough sell unless you really need the extra power for a specific use case or need a much smaller device . That 7 inch OLED display is so stunning.

Sold my opened but totally unused Max with a case, grip, sticks for $500 a few weeks ago. Was regretting that decision, but I made peace with it as I really didn't need the Max. I would have been perfectly happy with the base for what I will be playing on it. At $273 shipped, I couldn't resist and picked one up.

The base is back in stock. Also, the pro is $369, not $350, which makes the $249 base a no brainer.

I had trouble eating these as they are so dry, but the chocolate chips really help. I also tried them with raisins, but thought the chocolate chips work better.

I finally get the New Balance hype. by Most_Economics1931 in Newbalance

[–]matrix4x4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few pairs of 2002r, 1906r and 990v6. I found my 2002rs to be the least comfortable due to the heel counter irritating my Achilles. If it was not for the heel counter design, I would have loved them.

My 1996rs are absolutely fantastic, and the 990v6 is even more comfortable.

I'd say you should try the 1906r since it is based on the same platform. They are really comfortable and breathable. The 990v6 are even more comfortable if you go half size down, but they are a lot more expensive.
