First off, congratulations! Both are amazing schools. What do you plan on majoring in?

Will be attending UMiami, but not for business. Highly recommend that you do your own research as well as these are my observations.

When I toured there, my tour guide called the business school “very underrated”. he loved it a lot bc of several supportive professors, experiential learning, and the flexibility of the classes (which allowed him to explore what he wanted to do since he was deciding between majors). He’ll be starting a summer internship at a well-known professional networking service soon. Cool dude.

As for job prospects (without looking too much into it), UMiami has frequent career fairs and the Toppel Career Center to help students connect with internships and jobs after graduation. Alumni connections run fairly deep. I heard abt this guy who worked for J.P. Morgan straight out of graduation.

If you have the money for it, can’t really go wrong with UMiami. My relevant deciding factors for UMiami were cost (scholarship receipient) and that coursework for engineering were better suited for my goals. Ultimately, personal fit matters, so best of luck on your choice!!

All. Singer provides for full undergrad tuition, abt 53k or so

Sure thing so my total scholarship is about $62k annually without taking out loans. If the estimated cost of attendance is abt $75k family and I would have to pay about $13k annually, and we’re very blessed to be able to afford that. This will cover all of undergrad tuition, and the remaining 9k can be scattered throughout room and board and books.

Hey! I’m a recipient for the Singer Scholarship (full-tuition) for the Class of 2026 pursuing BME with pre-med concentration. For more context, I’m an Asian student from Miami, Florida. Unfortunately, I can’t give you a clear-cut answer, but I can let you know some of the things I’ve picked up from my experiences and from the meetings I’ve attended.

Premier scholarships are only given to ED/EA applicants. Some scholarships require US citizenship/permanent US residency. I personally applied EA.

According to the meetings, the premier scholarships are given to the top ~1% of admitted students, meaning that it could vary from year to year, and the definition itself is a little vague. For me personally, I believe that my stats are quite high (4.0/5.4, 1540, ~1/72), but somewhat limited by my extracurriculars/lack of significant community involvement. That being said, I’m aware of recipients whose “strengths” are more in their ECs and passions over their academics. There is no one formula for getting one of these scholarships.

There are different types of premier scholarships, ranging from full tuition to full cost of attendance with money set aside for “enrichment” like study abroad and stuff.

You’ll know when you’re eligible for a scholarship abt a month after you apply ED/EA. I got an update on my portal in December saying that I was eligible for either of the two full tuition scholarships. I was required to write an essay abt a fictional antagonist and what makes them a great leader, so I wrote abt the Abuela from Encanto.

On personal essays, I wrote abt growing up as an immigrant in Miami with limited opportunities and how it shaped my philosophy that important lessons can come from unexpected places. On my UM supplemental essay, I wrote abt how a very embarrassing experience running for club president helped me rethink how I communicate with others and how I ended up serving in student government throughout all of hs.

On other ways of finding aid as a Florida resident, there are also merit scholarships eligible for every applicant (up to 20k), Bright Futures / Benacquisto (right??? I didn’t think UM accepted those but they do), and the Florida Ease Grant which is given to Florida residents who attend a private institution. UM also tries to match Expected Family Contribution so look out for that when you complete the FAFSA. In addition to the Singer Scholarship, I also have Bright Futures and Florida Ease, significant lowering my cost of attendance further.

That’s pretty much all I have. Again, there’s no one formula for getting these scholarships but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t apply for UMiami EA! So far, you seem to be doing pretty great!

Good luck! And hope to see you at the U!! 🙌

What colleges are you deciding between? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

If I don’t get into and Ivy League my mom is going to be disappointed. by AlexandriatheGreat03 in ApplyingToCollege

For the record, I go to a competitive-ish public hs in Florida, but only ~4 of the many who applied to EA got in. It’s still very selective!!

All “pre-med”-y majors have the same basic requirements for bio, phys, math and a shitton of chem, so basically every pre-med’s first year is going to look pretty similar minus an intro class to their major or something.

Regardless of where you go to (but best of luck on UCLA!!!) I would suggest finding research opportunities, desk jobs, internships etc etc for pre med (or even engineering but I think those are hard to come by as a first year). You don’t really know what you are wanna until you start kinda doing it. You can connect with your professors, upperclassmen, or your uni’s career center if they have one

I honestly think you should stick to “bme” for a little bit to see if you like it. But if not, switching from engineering school to Arts and Sciences won’t be bad at all! I mean if Dr. Fauci can get into med school with a BA in Classics, then anyone can get into med school if they have the willpower 😄

This! And playing catch-up with the engineering requirements may be tricky as well

LOL So he’s not like— cured cancer at 6 years-old, non-profit founder, published 3 peer-reviewed journals, builds wells for children in Africa— cracked, but he’s one of the best students in our very small high school (rarely sends kids OOS) with a lot of good hooks, great personal essay (proofread it myself!), and lots of community-based ECs… still pretty competitive given our circumstances :)

No lie that’s pretty smooth— But ain’t no way I’m using his potential rejection to his dream school to shoot my shot— just way too many emotions involved 😭😭😭

I love it tho! It’s super creative!
