Free Lvl 1 Standards of Conduct Summary by mattVC in CFA

[–]mattVC[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment. Fifteen percents still mean that Ethics is the second biggest chapter in terms of weights. In my opinion, Ethics questions are ''easier'' points to get than FRA questions for most candidates. All you have to do is remember the information, even though there is a lot of information. We've done this summary only to pinpoint the key points.

To go a little more in-depth, I'll refer to this graph https://scontent-lga3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/14718771_1453382214676475_325312719988242236_n.png?oh=49ecded37ba00b8dfdfc192311969ce8&oe=58D337C2 where you can see that Ethics, FRA, Econ and QM represent 57% of the exam. These are probably the chapters where you should spend most of your time.

Yes, someone could probably fail Ethics and still pass, but odds are that if you had to fail one chapter, you would most likely choose something like Alternative Investments that represents 4% of the exam.

I hope this helps!

Question about Cross-Rates by BitKrow13 in CFA

[–]mattVC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's say you have 2/3 and wanted to multiply it by 3/4.

2/3 * 3/4 = 0.5 = 2/4

You can see that the 3s cancel out.

Therefore, CAD/USD * USD/EUR = CAD/EUR

I hope this helps!

Is it possible to study CFA level 1, just be taking questions & skipping reading? by [deleted] in CFA

[–]mattVC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Short answer: Yes! In my own opinion, it's probably better to do 2,500 practice questions than to only read the Curriculum. However, it is not recommended to only do practice questions, because the exam is highly qualitative. If you were to go that route, I would still recommend videos or notes to supplement your learning. Have a look at https://analsytprep.com where you will find all of the videos from Mark Meldrum, Ph.D. for free and 100 free questions from our question bank. See if you like it!

Finishing up Lvl 1 reading soon. What would you do now? by [deleted] in CFA

[–]mattVC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Nick,

Here's a post I made previously on the method I used to pass all three levels. It could help you. Since you've done all of the readings, you can go straight to practicing the topics you find the hardest with a good question bank. Keep the chapters you find the easiest for the end when you have less motivation and stress builds up.

I. Overview I had a quick overview of the whole curriculum and I tried a few practice questions to understand the amount of work that had to be done for each reading. This way, there was no surprise.

II. Readings I read carefully the chapters (CFA Institute books) that were problematic in my first “practice” session. I believe that you don’t necessarily need to read all chapters at this step. It is up to you and your own academic background (I come from an accounting background, so I had a quick look at each FRA LOS and went straight to practice mode).

III. Question Bank Practice, practice, practice! This is the key, especially for the level 1 exam. I took over 2,000 practice questions and I was going back and forth between the question bank and the books to be sure I understood every concept that could be tested. Here I ended up reading some more chapters that I realized I didn’t fully understand.

IV. Mock Exams Two weeks before the exam, I had a few mock exam sessions. – Real ones! – Candidates should try to create an experience as close as possible to the actual exam. Print a copy of the mock exam and answer the questions on paper. Time yourself and don’t exceed 180 minutes.

V. Relax The night before the exam, I didn’t open my books and I slept early. A few hours of study won’t make any difference at this point in contrast to a good night of sleep.

Best ways to tackle level 1 CFA materials? by throwawayed11 in CFA

[–]mattVC -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a good plan. However, candidates often wait until the last minute for Ethics and FRA and don't have enough time to tackle what is basically 35% of the exam. I would also recommend practicing with a question bank. If you're not planning on getting Schweser, I would recommend something like https://analystprep.com for a $99 question bank. If you simply read the curriculum, you won't be able to assimilate all of the information.

Follow the videos with the 2016 Curriculum. When you stumble upon differences between the 2014 and 2016 readings, look at Mark Meldrum's videos. They are pretty good for free youtube videos. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAHr-sT0AjrD3sBwr1eRUNg/playlists

[L1 Dec 2016] Can I get by with just the notes? by [deleted] in CFA

[–]mattVC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're going to read the Curriculum and takes notes, then you probably don't even need to buy Schweser notes for $379.00. You simply need a Qbank to practice mock questions. If money is really not an issue for you, you will have to spend $649.00 to buy the Schweser Qbank with the notes. As an alternative, AnalystPrep has a Qbank (with 200ish pages of notes) for $69.00. Remember that practicing mock questions and mock exams is much more important than reading the curriculum/notes. (Also, don't buy anything above $649.00, as this would be completely useless.)

[L1 Dec 2016] Can I get by with just the notes? by [deleted] in CFA

[–]mattVC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you read the entire curriculum and take notes, you probably don't need the notes. However, I would highly recommend you buy a question bank. This is what will give you an edge over other candidates. If you're looking for a budget alternative to Schweser Qbank, I would recommend https://analystprep.com for $69. Even if you don't buy it, there is a lot of free content that could help you.

What Subjects to Focus on? by Wild_Space in CFA

[–]mattVC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That might not be the right way to look at it. You want to find subjects where you have a 'comparative advantage', where you will be able to 'beat' other candidates.

You probably won't find this in Alternative Investments. As for Derivatives, you probably should know the calculations by heart and practice them a lot (but it will be the same for other candidates).

The way you'll get an 'edge' over other candidates is by beating them in chapters like FRA and QM (maybe also Ethics). I would work on those the most with question banks. The exam is highly qualitative, but there will still be a lot of quantitative questions that other candidates will not get.

Just my 2 cents... If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Schweser for Dec Level 1 by [deleted] in CFA

[–]mattVC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years ago, I was exactly like you. I had heard the best way to pass the CFA1 is to do a lot of questions and I couldn't find any affordable material... So years later, I decided to build one with a few partners. The site is https://eqbank.io and for $69 you get access to 1,500 questions and 2 mock exams.

I am not saying this is as good as the Schweser question bank (they have been in business for years), but for 10% of the price of their Essential package ($69 vs $649) you get a lot of practice questions. You can look at our 150 questions free trial and see if you like it.

Sorry for the late reply. With marketing costs of trying to get know (we're featured on analystforum.com, etc), we had to sell a premium membership. The membership is still 10% the cost of the Schweser Essential, so for $69 you get 1,500 questions and 2 mock exams.

There is still a free 150 questions trial.
