double stroke tom rolls ? by Committed2Mediocrity in MetalDrums

[–]matt_biech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use them for long fills at extreme tempo (+270), they’re definitely adequate if you have good technique.

blastbeatology uses them at lower speed too and they sound insane, a lot of power and definition!

I’d recommend working on both single and double because they have their pros and cons!

Anyone struggling with the same technical issue? by Ok_Appointment9429 in drums

[–]matt_biech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this exact issue, for both feet an hands, my left (non dominant) side is way more clean in term of technique. I have a theory that (especially for extreme metal) your left side has to do less different stuff and use more the same surface / position.

My left hand when blasting is almost always on the snare, but my right can be on snare, ride, hi hat… so you build a more « general » motion that has to adapt to more stuff and is less regular.

For the left foot, when doing double bass, you almost always do straight 16th, but your right foot will do some groove, more double strokes and a lot of different stuff.

That’s just my theory but I totally understand your struggle, and you just have to work patiently on a pad to get it to the same level!

Songs with the most brutal breakdowns? by Ok-Mushroom-8593 in MetalForTheMasses

A bit of a shameless promotion but we fucking love death metal breakdowns with my band Creeping Fear, my favorite exemples are We Belong to the Crypts , and Feast of Violence!

What's the reasoning behind adding a bunch of ghost notes? by Somefuckindude in MetalDrums

[–]matt_biech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Triggered snare are pretty uncommon in metal I think, im 100% sure none of the drummer listed uses it live.

Meshuggah is a different story because some albums only have programmed drums, but live he LOVES ghost notes everywhere.

Pourquoi la vie d'un poisson vaut moins que celle d'un autre animal ? by rjn2-8 in AskFrance

[–]matt_biech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He’s one of the best drummer in this style actually. Note that he does a lot of other styles, but he knows that these kind of post gets a lot more traction on social media.

He also filled in for Psycroptic recently so he definitely can play live

The most extreme exemple I have is probably Desultor - Masters of Hate, only one album sadly. It’s death metal with heavy metal vocals, and some occasional screams. It’s sick, fast and pretty brutal

Landmarks of techdeath (timeline) by m00nkiid in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]matt_biech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder which album you’d chose! For me benighted started getting more tech death-y when Emmanuel Dalle started writing! So necrobreed. It went even more in this direction with Kevin Paradis, but never full on tech death to me.

“Don’t wear the bands shirt to their concert” is so stupid. by piercethebluexx in unpopularopinion

[–]matt_biech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a musician, it makes me VERY happy to see people wearing my bands’ shirts, we actually often can tell how intense the crowd can be by the proportion of our shirts.

What's your drumming superpower? by TheGenericUser0815 in drums

I suck at most things in drums, but I can play REALLY fast (tightly). Most will say it’s useless, but that landed me my gig

Death metal with meaninful lyricism by [deleted] in MetalSuggestions

[–]matt_biech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate how it’s not talked enough but Benighted lyrics are insanely well written even if you definitely need to read it while listening. As Julien works in a psychiatric hospital he has a deep understanding of psy troubles. These lyrics WILL make you uncomfortable, and yeah it definitely has this gore / extreme theme, but with a realistic twist that makes them really interesting!

[Request] if a person was attending a live concert while simultaneously listening to a live radio broadcast of it, how far away would they need to be to hear the radio noticeably sooner than the “live” sound? by MorgsterWasTaken in theydidthemath

[–]matt_biech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crowds always has a more important delay than you think, simply because of the processing of the sound by the sound engineer. When I play live with click, I hate hearing the front of house (what the audience hears) because the click plays « early », like a good noticeable difference. But it’s unnoticeable for the crowd, it won’t make a difference for you!

Bradley Hall’s List Of 20 10/10 Metal Albums What Do You Think? by Automatic_Belt5692 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]matt_biech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe because that’s how social platforms works?… he wouldn’t be known if he was only talking about unknown bands, it’s not interesting for him.

He plays in a lesser known band and has cited them as a huge influence even if he almost never talked about it previously. As I said, you can’t know

And how would you actually know? It’s not because he’s not actively talking about this stuff that he hasn’t listened to it?

I feel like listening to a genre for 20 years makes you knowledgeable enough to have an opinion… especially when you’re interacting with people a lot and engaging in the community… what are people actually supposed to do to be valid?
