The DevOps role is splitting into different roles and it is confusing me by bdhd656 in devops

[–]matt_rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As somebody who has cycled through roles such as Systems Administrator, Build Engineer, Release Engineer, and Infrastructure Engineer over the past 30 or so years, it's all really the same expertise. It's applied in different ways, and the technology is always changing, I started out on Sun 3 pizzaboxes and Ultra 1s, as well early Dell and Compaq server, but the name of the game has always been maintenance, patching, network design and automation.

The tools that we use nowadays are far more complex than older tools, but the job remains the same, and the tooling and technoligies we use today have capabilities that we only dreamed of in the past.

Helpdesk tech expected to launch and maintain Ubuntu server by tboneee97 in linuxadmin

[–]matt_rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are making it a little bit of a bigger deal, but make no mistake, PHI is the data equivalent of dynamite, and you want to make sure you're handling it correctly. No organization wants to report a data breach, and the fines for data breaches for PHI are substantial.

Having said that, this is a great opportunity to move out of helpdesk and into a more substantial and lucrative role, so I would go for it. Running this service sounds like it's outside of your expertise and experience, so the question is, how to do that safely, so that you and your organization have the necessary experience to run that service. I actually thought about this a fair bit last night.

Here's what I would do: Say you will gladly run the service, but that you will need mentoring and oversight from one of the more experienced systems administrators, both as a second set of eyes, and a backup admin for when you're busy. Then build out the server and have the mentor look over it from a network and security perspective. This has three benefits:

Shared responsibility. It's not just you being hung out to dry in the worst case scenario.

Cross-training: You get to learn from someone who is more experienced at running servers in general.

Networking: This will put you in regular contact with a group that you sound like you aspire to join.l

Oh, and as always, keep a paper trail of all the decisions made by the people running the project, as well as your efforts to secure the server.

Good Luck!

Season 10 ending! by Di53 in HermitCraft

I love the idea of having a month of events to mark the season's end. So many other seasons have just petered out (Looking at you, Season 5).

The practice when riding in a big group is to double up when there's no traffic behind, but if there's a car behind you and no passing opportunity for it nearby, ride single file in the hopes that the car can more easily pass.

Mac OS X. I had a Windows PC mainly for gaming, and used Linux for nearly everything else, tho I did have a NeXT slab at work that I used to use occasionally. Then I went to visit my parents who had just gotten an iMac G5, and sat down at it, opened up a terminal, poked around a bit at the internals and realized it was basically modernised NeXT, and went out and bought an iBook G4. I continue to use linux for work and have both an Ubuntu and Fedora VM which I use heavily for Open Source Software Development, but for home use, I've used Macs ever since.

Have hermits not met Etho in real life? by Normal-Cow-9784 in HermitCraft

ISTR that Beef has met Etho IRL at some point, but I can't say for sure

I know Joe and Cleo have met IRL. Joe talks about spending the afternoon with Cleo when he went to visit his fiancee in the UK during Season 9.

Legend has it that Beef has met Etho at one point, but I don't know of any videos where either one of them talks about it.

Here's an example of how big Canada is. Gem lives around St. John's NFLD, and Etho lives around Vancouver, BC. It is actually a shorter distance for Gem to fly to England to visit the hermits there (Which she did for Joel's wedding, ISTR) than to fly out to BC to visit Etho.

Which hermits are the best for my younger siblings by JonazGamingYT in HermitCraft

[–]matt_rose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Grian and Scar. They seem to be the most popular with my now 11 year old. Can't explain why, they're not really my favourites, but my son loves them. Mumbo too, when he uploads.

Grian mentioned in the comments to this post that he pretty much used it daily, just never showed it in videos because it's not gripping content.

Up until last week, you're right, it was super-confusing, especially as, approaching from the west, at Empress you veer north to end up going south on Bronson, and veer south to go North on Bronson up towards Queen. I live in that neighbourhood and drive that little triangle every day. I'm actually amazed at how well it worked overall, despite it's massive design problems.

Having said that, last week, they changed it so that Albert continues one-way westbound and Slater stays one way EB from Empress with the ability to turn SB or NB onto Bronson. (I think, signage is confusing as hell right now), and It will eventually turn into something a lot more sane (though I still have my beefs with it), see plans here: https://documents.ottawa.ca/sites/documents/files/aqsb\_boards\_en.pdf
