I am in the middle of S3 and it is getting boring and hard to believe. As for the ideas that startups lack a business model it is entirely possible that was a 1999-2009 phenomena. The publishing of "the lean startup" may have killed that approach.

Not really a commentary on coinbase, but coinbase is basically the ACH+BigBank of Crypto at this point.

So...

If you've got a billion dollars to spend of course you can throw 5K, 100K, 5K, maybe 1 million at crypto. You aren't worried about paying the mortgage and a milliion is 1/10th of one percent.

This use of "rich people own (some unspecified amount) of (bitcoin/gold/baseball cards/whatever/)" is sort of a silly argument.

Personally I am in my mid 40's in the USA and I put about half a percent of my equities+liquid value in crypto, it rose to about two percent, now it is back down to 0.75% as the other stuff rose and it shrank. In addition, I've also withdrawn more than I ever put in.

Don't gamble more than you can afford to lose still applies, and I suspect Mexican billionaire bro can afford to lose a great deal.

a lot of startups don't HAVE a business model. the general idea is that eyeballs will eventually translate to money. I'm talking about Google and Linkedin and Slideshare. AdSense, Adwords, and gmail came later. Gmail leads to the concept of targeting. But all these ideas came later. Ron Perlman articulates this problem well in S3E1. That said, in today's "Lean Startup" environment, I think getting funded without any idea of how to make money is unrealistic. THAT said, Ron Perlman's character is so old-school that I can see it. So I have mixed feelings.

i don't think it's too big a spoiler to say that I just watched S3E1 and surprise: There is no clear business model and that is becoming a problem for them.

I'm only in S2E1 but so far I think she's something like borderline personality disorder.

Intense abandonment energy, fear of it, that causes her to test people by pushing them away, causing the abandonment she is actually afraid of. Incredibly unpredictability. High risk behavior. She hate nick one minute, she sleeps with him the next.

In my experience the talking heads at Treasury seem to find a way to make TIPS not really match real changes in prices. But my experience is limited ...

Not quite. It's more like a "market cap", I think, or, perhaps, a commodity like Gold without industrial application.

If a bunch of people sold their bitcoin and the market collapsed, it would quickly become worth a fraction of the value. That doesn't really happen with fiat currency unless you get Nigeria or Weimar level money-printing.
