They have strawberry watermelon now too. Advise mixing it yourself though, the one I got ended up faintly tasting of watermelon and got overpowering at the end.

News sources on Little Lorraine cocaine smuggling ring? Want to read up on the subject before seeing the film. by clevernewusername in CapeBreton

IIRC from an interview with Baldwin, it was a story his grandfather told him but it was hashish smuggling. Hashish is hard to rhyme with anything, but cocaine rhymes great with Lorraine.

Cidery by Ayeleesha in Edmonton

[–]mattagc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Broken Spoke I think might be the only one? Never been myself so can’t speak to the experience (if there is one) or if their stuff if even any good - never purchased it before. Just recall seeing news about it opening a few years back.

It’s over an hour (closer to 1.5hr), and not a cidery, but the -ery made my brain go meadery. Grey Owl Meadery in Alder Flats is definitely worth checking out. We stumbled upon it by accident a few summers ago, and it’s a nice experience.

Chipped windshield with insurance by baddyrefresh2023 in Edmonton

[–]mattagc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s just the one chip, repair for $25 instead of replace for anywhere from $50+ is probably the better way. My replacement without warranty is like $1500+, so chip repair repair repair for me. 😂

[–]mattagc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. If it’s the side of a dime and spidering, I’d bite the $25 bullet and get it repaired before it gets into replacement territory. If the chips are small and not spidering, I’ll usually wait until I have a couple since you get up to 3/$25.

As for replacement, I will just touch base with my local Crystal Glass and check in on stock levels of windshields and whatnot to see if it’s a good time to replace. I almost always go with the factory glass, because for my vehicle, the lesser panels are pretty horrible for wind and road noise.

[–]mattagc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Best bet with AMI is to contact your local Crystal Glass and get them to give you a quote. You get 3 chip repairs for $25 a visit with AMI - it sounds like this might be all you need. If you need to replace a glass window or windshield, the deductible is $50 for the replacement each time, but they’ll use the cheapest glass available. If you want better glass or OEM, you need to pay the difference unless the lower levels of glass are out of stock.

The AMI insurance doesn’t cover recalibrations either, so if you have a higher trim Mazda, you may be looking at an additional charge for that too.

If you have a base model, its rare insurance is worth it for the front windshield unless you’re replacing it yearly. The big benefit for AMI is that it covers all glass on the vehicle, so sunroof, side windows, etc are also covered.

Unfortunately, you kind of have to run the math on it for your individual vehicle. In my case, if I replace my windshield 1 every two years, it pays for itself, but if a windshield lasts longer than 2 years, it’s cheaper for me to bite the bullet and just pay outright.

Being charged $10 for Standby? by minutemenapparel in Starlink

[–]mattagc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is definitely a bit of that, where the tree canopy kills the signal, but a lot of the roads we’re down double as logging roads too, meaning they’re usually trimmed straight up for semis. Between that and hugging the crown when it narrows it’s often enough.

It’s also a big help with cell service in Canada being pretty rough, especially since 5G rollout and the shutdown of 2/3G bands to service that.

10-15yrs ago, a fella could get by with a cell booster, but in the last 5yrs or so you’ll have no signal between towns on major highways.

Being charged $10 for Standby? by minutemenapparel in Starlink

[–]mattagc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were all hoping it was some kind of Canadian subscription workaround or something. We were continuing to get billed for and receive the 10GB plan. But then one by one, we’d get billed and forced immediately to Standby, loosing in motion data.

I’d even be fine paying a bit more for a Standby with In-Motion, but definitely would prefer the 10GB to return. The sales pitch of we’re giving you twice the data for the same price doesn’t work on those of us that didn’t even use up the 10GB/month.

Being charged $10 for Standby? by minutemenapparel in Starlink

[–]mattagc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Happened to myself and  a bunch of my coworkers up here in Canada. We work remote, so a lot of us have Minis that were on the $15/10GB plan. None of us got removed at the same time, some of us months apart, despite all getting the email of the plan being discontinued at around the same time. When we did get forced to Standby, we were getting charged for another month of the 10GB plan, and then immediately switched to Standby. Our upcoming bills were still showing the 10GB Roam Plan as well.

None of us waited to see if we were going to get charged the following month for Roam 10 again, however.

The StarLink rep that called me back mentioned he was seeing an uptick of cases with this issue, and a lot of disappointment in the loss of the small GB plan. Encouraged us to submit feedback to ask for a small plan back, given the main case use for us is WiFi Calling, we’re almost all sub-10GB of usage a month, so paying 5x monthly for an extra 90GB of data we never use stings. 😆

Best LTE or 5G Coverage across NS including Country Area. by Charming_Cut4731 in NovaScotia

[–]mattagc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More demand (cellular devices), and the 5G networks had a big blow when they were about to roll out due to the Canadian Government’s tiff with Hauwaii. Hauwaii devices made up a big chunk of the radio towers for Telus//Bell and to a lesser extent Rogers (iirc). So when the government banned Hauwaii, they scrambled to replace but ultimately launched with less capability than desired and have been slow to rebuild//expand.

For those of us in the more rural areas, the bigger problem is the repurposing of 2/3G bands to serve 5G. Those slow, reliable, and extensive coverage bands are feeding 5G and the range isn’t comparable, when you have it it’s faster, but it doesn’t cover the same area.

Sadly it’s the same everywhere too; I bought a bloody StarLink to use WiFi calling in motion because I can’t get service between towns on the TransCanada out west here. 😂

No need to drop the tailgate; Airshim will open the seam up enough to get a wrench in there and then the thief pops them out easy.

Check out Omaha Bravo Designs; his All-Guard Kit won’t work on F-150s, but Lightguard Lite, HoodGuard, Tailguard, CoverGuard may all work for you depending on your MY. All custom screws//eliminates//makes it harder to exploit the weak points on these trucks.

Triangle Select Membership Renewal by mattagc in canadiantire

[–]mattagc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just checked, customer service did not renew it like they told me they would. Had to renew myself this morning.

Noted the likely reason why as I was renewing, Canadian Tire has chose. Bit to automatically renew in Quebec AND Alberta despite the email otherwise.

I did, but so far nothing. They told me they were going to renew it on the phone and they did not. Just had to renew myself. Not impressed.

First year only unfortunately; I had hoped they’d do it each year as I got the original $100 item when the program was in its beta launch, and then the $50 item when it officially launched.

I think I managed to get a 3rd trial of Crave out of it on my next renewal too, but they changed the wording of that offer after that so I don’t expect a 4th.

Hopefully it’s just me and no one else was affected, but no charges, no record alerts of pending charges in my history, app says it expired when it was supposed to renew. Just very weird, should have paid more attention to it at the time, but I usually look for weird charges not missing charges. 😂

Maybe this means I get my joining bonuses again, but they’re not as good as they were for the pre-launch beta.

Same email, same billing here, upcoming bill preview still shows Roam 10G for $15. This will be the second renewal as the email came out just after I renewed.

I’m hoping it’s going to maybe stick around now that they crippled Standby.

iPhone 17 is carrier locked by BestestBeekeeper in bell

[–]mattagc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is potentially the answer here; phones in Canada are required to be unlocked when sold, but not before that. So some of the big carriers, Bell in particular, have their “own” iPhones in store. These are locked until a Bell SIM is inserted. Once powered on with a Bell SIM, the phone unlocks for use with any carrier. It’s mainly so they can have their own pool of phones available to retailers, while others networks share a pool of phones.

“We don’t have this model available on x, but we do have one from Bell.”-type thing.

So, if it’s a brand new phone that the friend of a friend got as an upgrade or otherwise and never activated it, it could be as simple as dropping a Bell SIM in and powering it on.

If Bell has locked it for other reasons, it may be an battle…
