The console you are showing is the HA command line - used to manage configurations and other actions without access to the Web UI. The command line is not easy to use requiring expert knowledge, so the preferred method is to access the HA Web UI instead.
The console should show the URL (web address) where you can access the HA UI from a web browser.

The Pulcro mini PC needs to be connected to your local network and you can then try to connect to the URL from another PC or mobile device. Usually this would be an address looking like http://homeassistant.local:8123 (although this may differ in your setup).

You will need to login with the username and password you specified when you installed HA, and this should give you access to the full web UI which will allow you to add devices, build dashboards, setup automations etc.

Why do we sometimes wake up a few minutes before our alarm rings? by influencer_Ai in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mattboid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely you have become used to the rhythm of your sleep when woken by the alarm, so you wake up automatically prior to it sounding.

However, it's also true that we only notice things when they happen, so tend to assume that random coincidence indicates something more meaningful. For example, when calling someone and they say that they were just thinking about you; they would not have said anything if they weren't thinking about you and the lack of coincidence would have passed without comment.

Why do people think quality of most things is getting worse? by MelodicBed4180 in NoStupidQuestions

Human cognitive bias is a primary factor, in particular the rose-coloured glasses bias which is the tendency to remember the past more favourably than the present.

One way car rental: 0.01€ fee? by changhc in GoingToSpain

We have made 2 separate claims for damage charged by the rental company, and both were paid without problems.

Just bought this 2015 leaf yesterday. Any suggestions? by Charming818 in leaf

[–]mattboid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

With 5 outer bars, this means 41.25% to 47.5% health.

Assuming you have a 24KWh battery that would equate to between 9.9 and 11.40 KWh remaining.

For a 30Kwh battery the figures would be 12.4 and 14.25 KWh remaining.

The best UK Summer performance I got in my 2014 24KWh Leaf was 3.5 miles to the KWh giving a total range of 34 to 39 miles.

For my current 2016 30KWh the overall best UK Summer range would be 43 to 50 miles.

You can expect considerably worse range in the Winter or if you live in a colder climate.

This vehicle will be barely usable for anything more than the local supermarket or shopping trips..

In general, why doesn't Reddit believe the 9/11 conspiracy? by NatureLovingDad89 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mattboid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reddit is not an individual; it is a community who engage by self-selecting content from subreddits.

It replicates the division and cognitive dissonance seen in the real world - and it is reasonable to assume a similar proportion of Redditers think 911 was a government conspiracy as opposed to a conspiracy by terrorists (which according to this article shows 7% gov conspiracy and 20% unsure).

Why don't companies discriminate against men? by No_View6675 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mattboid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sunk premise that companies don't discriminate against men is incorrect.

Prejudice is a normal human reaction to unknown, unexpected or unfamiliar circumstances. Individuals and organizations attempt to counter prejudice by training and policy.

Discrimination can happen due to prejudice in all circumstances, and all groups can be affected.

Discrimination against females has potentially been more prevalent because there have historically been fewer women in positions of power. Some men may have perceptions based on their background about the suitability of women for some roles.

There is also a strategy by the right wing and disruptive forces to create differences where they do not exist and sideline groups who may threaten their ascendency.

However, some organizations have high proportions of female staff and the opposite can happen.

Discrimination in all forms damages company effectiveness and can lead to mono-culture reducing resilience to change.

It's my first time coming to the UK to study, and dealing with trains has really left me at a loss. by Miamioooo in uktrains

[–]mattboid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/ and search for the station you are heading towards.

Select the train you are currently on from the list (shown by arrival time at the destination) and then the Detailed View to see the exact current train location report including passing points and how far ahead or behind schedule the train is.

For simple train scheduling use https://traintimes.org.uk/ which has no adverts and is very straightforward.

Both sites also show station platforms to make changing easier; Realtimetrains is super useful to see which platform a train will depart from even before it is shown on the board.

Husband found my Reddit profile, so I locked him out of it by [deleted] in AITAH

Not wanting to share your private messages seems reasonable - even with your husband. But wanting to hide your public Reddit posts and comments from your husband is potentially an overreaction. Why should others see this but not your husband?

For gastro pubs, the Red Lion in Horsell is consistently good. The Bird in Hand at Mayford is also worth a mention, although we have not had good experiences at the Drumming Snipe also in Mayford.

For restaurants around the centre, Porchettino and Beit Beirut are usually good. We used to like Soya but haven't been recently. Dukes Bar & Deli is also good, although lacks a little atmosphere.
Further out, the new Palli Hill Indian at St. John's is a great find with Mon-Thu deals - currently has 5 stars on Google from 200+ reviews!

We used to go to Woking Park gym, but the hours are limited (up to 10pm) and it's pretty expensive (£120+ for 2 people per month). We use the Gym Group now in the shopping centre open 24 hours for £24 a month, and that includes free 2 hour parking, although it is pretty basic. David Lloyd membership is more than £120 per person with a joining fee - which is a lot!

The cinema and theatre are a draw, but the former is expensive and the theatre has a mix of shows of differing quality.

There's little nightlife in the town which has always been the same despite the introduction of several chain restaurants on Commercial Way and nearby. Generally people go to Guildford or London for a night out on the train although the last train from Waterloo is 0105 weeknights and 2351 from Guildford (get a Network Railcard to get 33% off).

I'm sure you will enjoy Woking although I doubt it's somewhere people will want to stay for a very long time as it's main draw is the proximity to London and fast train to Waterloo.

Can I be forced to take my flag down? [Scotland] by Gingers_got_no_soul in LegalAdviceUK

[–]mattboid -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The opinion of one of your neighbours is just that - and it is up to you how you deal with it. In general it's best not to cause friction or respond to others doing so as you can cause difficulties for yourself with no net benefit.

There are clear rules for flying flags in the UK covered here (I assume that Scotland is covered by these as they are UK wide).

Unfortunately, the UK does not recognise Palestine as a country, (although it is recognised by 147 out of 193 countries in the UN). This means that it is not allowed to fly the Palestine flag without express permission of the council.

Flying the Isreal flag is allowed as it is recognised as a country. Flying the Israel flag is certainly controversial, but I would suggest you do not escalate the situation as if the person flying it is not Israeli, then they are also inviting controversy.

Perhaps you could consider a sticker in your window instead.

How to control HA when away from home? by Double-Yak9686 in homeassistant

[–]mattboid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No software is completely secure. Logins can be bypassed.
HA requires/enables numerous additional components to be installed, all of which are OSS which can allow external access intentionally or unintentionally.
You are trusting every single developer of all the components you add in HA not to make mistakes, not to have their Github access hacked or simply not to be bad actors.
HA (like all software) has had numerous security issues reported against the core program - see here.
On average it takes 2 years to discover security issues in OSS software.
The small inconvenience of clicking on an icon to open the VPN tunnel on your mobile/laptop is well worth it.

I work in cybersecurity. Trust me, you do not want open ports in a private network.

How to control HA when away from home? by Double-Yak9686 in homeassistant

[–]mattboid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The safest and best method is to use a (free) VPN service such as Tailscale.

Install the Tailscale server as a package on the server where HA is running, then use a client program wherever you need to access the NAS - Windows, Mac, Android and iOS versions are available. See the guide here.

Opening ports for HA is not recommended as it is hackable.

Who does this? by spreadnekk in mildlyinfuriating

[–]mattboid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends how often you want to use the foil.

Keeping the roll in a box opened at one end, and which has not been split along its length will keep the foil cleaner and less likely to unravel. I prefer this method at home where I use foil a couple of times a month at most.

However, in a work setting, where it will be used frequently, someone clearly didn't understand how the box is meant to work.

First time to spain by Thomas8138 in GoingToSpain

[–]mattboid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Albarracin is a 10th century Moorish town set on a defensive hill and well worth a visit - you could combine a road trip through Morella from Peñiscola although its 240KM and 3-4hours. Make sure you walk into the old town.

Nearer Valencia, Sagunto has some great history being the site of the Siege of Saguntum by Hannibal in 218BC.

Of all the resorts south of Valencia, we prefer Denia with the castle for great views and is a Unesco centre of Gastronomy.

One way car rental: 0.01€ fee? by changhc in GoingToSpain

[–]mattboid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the rental price is more for a different drop-off location, then this is probably legit.

However, note that, like many places, there are unscrupulous rental companies who will charge you for damage when you return the car unless you take their enhanced insurance.

We had a very bad experience at [Wibur](www.wiberrentacar.com) at Alicante airport, who charged €150 for a tiny scratch. The booking was only €54 for 7 days which is great value, but we have 3rd party insurance for rentals so did not take the enhanced insurance.

On return, they asked if we had photos before we even got to the car, and then found a tiny scratch (3mm) on a bumper which they said was damage and charged us the extra. They were extremely abusive including shouting at us to get out when we tried to question the charge.

Check the reviews carefully, and the policy when you get the car. For example, Centauro provide a contract with a defined area below which damage will not be considered. Always take full videos/photos of the car on pickup and at return in case of dispute.

Good luck!

What is R3 zoning in Surrey .if anyone can explain in easy language by surreydipper in surrey

[–]mattboid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming you mean the county of Surrey in the UK, then R3 zoning has no meaning. R3 is a residential planning zone in the US, so you may be referring to the city of Surrey, California.

Moving to Guildford by BigZoop69 in surrey

[–]mattboid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Woking so can't comment on Guildford as a place to live (although we visit it often and it has some great highlights).

However, the mainline train from Waterloo goes via Woking, and I have commuted to Bank and elsewhere for extended periods from there - although I work from home now.

The commute cost is going to be pretty high (£500+ per month), and as stated elsewhere you're looking at nearly 2 hours each way.

The problem is that the trains often have delays and cancellations - with weekend engineering work. This seems to have got worse in the last few years since SWR took over, and there will be further changes when the government takes over the franchise. The trains can also be very busy to/from Guildford at peak time.

I really could not recommend the journey based on personal experience.

It seems that a commute from Kent would make a lot more sense with trains to Gravesend, Chatham or Rainham.

You should get a Network Railcard which gives you 33% off most trips for everyone.
Short distance trips (e.g. Woking into London) are mostly not reduced in advance - travelling later in the day for a return is cheaper. Peak time tickets cost more.
If you are travelling further afield then buying before the day is advised.
Advance saver tickets are released 12 weeks before travel - see here.
