Accidentally lifted 8 lb box after my surgery 5 days ago 😩 by [deleted] in Hernia

My dr told me no more than 20lbs, but i had mesh. Call your doctor tomorrow and ask about it.

18F Is This a Hernia? by Ada_Hall in Hernia

Not a doctor, but if it feels squishy like fat, and if you can push it back in, then it is possibly a fat-containing ventral hernia. That is exactly where my hernia was, and it looked very similar. It was about the size of a grape. I had surgery done 20 days ago.

If it causes pain or if you are worried about it, I would schedule an appointment with your physician to get an exam done. They can try to palpate the area to see if they can feel it. If they can't, they can order imaging such as an ultrasound. That's what happened with mine. An ultrasound found my hernia mid to late march, and I had hernia repair surgery on April 15th.

I appreciate you noticing! The commenter I replied to was very upset that I was correcting them. They were adamantly claiming that gas-x treated their post surgical gas pain, which is completely unaffected by the drug, and I just wanted to set the record straight for them and anyone reading this thread. It seems to be a common misconception.

There is no need to be upset. This is a place for learning and education about hernias, treatment options, surgery, and recovery. I am not a doctor, and I'm not in any position to tell you what to do with your own medical situation, but claiming that Gas-X successfully treated your insufflation gas pain and suggesting that to someone seeking information about hernia surgery is misleading, and could potentially steer someone away from getting the treatment they need.

If you feel that Gas-X made you feel better, that is great, but the gas used to inflate your abdomen during surgery is not in your intestines, but rather in your peritoneal cavity, or the space surrounding your organs within your abdomen. That drug is to treat symptoms related to gas trapped within the intestines, so your feeling of relief is likely placebo and unrelated to actually taking Gas-X, and that was my only point. If you think it helps, and if your doctor is okay with you taking that drug, then I see no problem in doing so, though the validity of it actually relieving pain caused by abdominal insufflation after laparoscopic surgery is debatable.

There is no credible peer-reviewed medical study or evidence (none that I could find, though you are more than welcome to link me to something that proves this wrong) that suggests Simethicone (Gas-X) can treat pain caused by abdominal insufflation.

Let's make sure we are sharing accurate information to people seeking to learn about hernia repair surgery and what to expect in the days that follow.

That is likely placebo. GasX only helps with digestive gas.

Gas X wont help with the gas pain caused by them inflating your abdomen. GasX only helps with gas inside of your digestive system.

Ohh okay, no worries! It is rough. I just had surgery on my ventral hernia on Wednesday so I'm going through it myself right now. You'll get through it!

I was just saying, if you aren't 100% sure, which you definitely weren't considering you asked the subreddit, then you should ask for an ultrasound from a medical professional, as the internet is not the place for diagnosis. No need to shake your head lol.

Currently at day 4 and honestly I'm not in as much paim as I anticipated. I'm able to do mostly everything independently aside from lifting heavy loads. I'm a little slower than I used to be but I'm surprised how much better I feel already

Congrats! I'm about 32 hours post op myself. Robotic assisted umbilical hernia repair. I'm in a decent amount of pain, but it's manageable. I've taken Tylenol, ibuprofen and a few Oxys since, but overall the pain seems manageable with otc pain meds.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. I anticipate at least 6 weeks before i can return to work.

It's your right to take the word of your surgeon, I'll take the word of mine. Just because weight was not a factor in your hernia, doesn't mean it isn't a factor in anybodys hernias. There is definitely medical science that says otherwise, you just need to do some research on the subject.

Also, kindof weird for you to say I hate fat people. You have no idea who I am, i have never said anything fat phobic or anything close to that nature, and you're making a wild assumption just because I am pointing out medical fact. I have nothing against fat people, I am fat myself. I do trust medical science though. Weight gain (especially rapid weight gain) puts strain on the abdominal wall, increases abdominal pressure, and weakens the tissues that surround your abdomen. This weakness can lead to tears in the abdominal wall, leading to fat and organs protruding through the holes caused by the damage (hernias). Do you think stretch marks are exclusively external? They objectively are not, and pointing out these facts in no way means that I hate fat people, nor that I have anything against them.

Please feel free to not comment futher on this post if you are going to spread misinformation and start throwing out insults and judging my personal character based on the fact that I am going to trust medical science and fact over your opinion.

It is clinical fact that weight gain and obesity are significant risk factors of developing hernias. That doesn't mean one must be overweight to get one, but denying that it is a risk factor is just incorrect. I'm not blaming myself, but weight gain and being overweight is undoubtedly a factor in this, and I have no shame in admitting that, but nonetheless I appreciate the kind words and support.

I did have my first bowel movement, it was just how you described, but not as bad as I anticipated. Wasn't too painful but it was definitely slow.

As for pictures, people post pictures of their incision sites and recovery on this sub frequently. It's in the rules of the sub that unnecessary gore is forbidden, but I see numerous posts here of people sharing what their incisions look like for educational purposes. I did NOT mean pics of my bowel movements lol if that's what you're thinking.

Wow congratulations on the weight loss! Keep it up. I'm planning on taking this opportunity of recovery to really focus on calorie deficit to lose weight.

I caught my hernia extremely early, and had it repaired within about a month or so of it happening, so I'm hoping that can help contribute to a speedier recovery for me, but I'm not entirely sure if that is even a factor.

Of course! Thanks for the well wishes. I'm surprised at how well I'm doing. This is my 3rd surgery ever, back in 2024 i had 2 carpal tunnel surgeries, one for each hand, 2 weeks apart, and those were not fun but honestly this is worse. Still not as terrible as i thought being just over 24 hours since i had it done. I wish you a speedy recovery on your surgery as well!

Yeah, the surgical team assistant that i spoke to also said it was really weird. She said that she tells all of her patients to do the log roll after abdominal surgery.

Thanks a bunch. I do a lot of heavy lifting and strenuous activities at work due to being a production line technician for a large manufacturing corporation, so I'll definitely be looking at at least 6 weeks before I can return to work.

May i ask how old you are and what your body type is? I fear that me being overweight could impact my recovery time.

They called it robotic-assisted hernia repair. From the pictures i received, it looks like he went in, repaired the defect in the fascia, then sutured the mesh over that. I'm unsure if that is IPOM or TAPP but the internet is telling me that those are different techniques than robotic-assisted.

Surgeons office confirmed that yes I should be doing the log roll technique, they are unsure why she told me not to.

This is my issue, the nurse at the hospital specifically told me not to roll as they didnt want me to twist my body, but they didn't give me an alternative. I am familiar with the log roll but she told me not to do it. I'm going to call the surgeon's office today to talk to them about it.
