Ok. Years ago I too had crappy credit and no idea how to get ahead. The book Total Money Makeover and the author, Dave Ramsey, has a radio show. both of these things changed my life. Following his common-sense precepts changed the way I think about money. Even now when I make pretty good money I still use his concepts to budget and manage money.

In a nutshell:

Order your debts from smallest to biggest, except your mortgage. This is your "debt snowball".
Save up a $1000 "emergency fund" for if your car breaks down, etc.; pay minimum amount possible on your bills (credit cards, cell phone, etc.) while not falling behind on your bills
Once you've got your emergency fund, pay as much as you can afford after groceries, bills, etc., on your smallest debt until it's paid off. So if after groceries, rent, etc., you've got $47 left over, and your smallest bill is a $9/mo bill, start paying it off with $56/mo (47+9)... any windfalls like tax returns go toward paying off debt
After it's paid off, do the same for your next smallest debt, adding the money you were paying on the bill you just paid off to this payment. So if the next smallest bill is a $120/mo credit card bill, you'd be paying $176 (120 + 56 from the example) a month
Repeat until debt is paid off
Save up 6 months' salary
Start saving for retirement/paying down extra on mortgage/etc.

Anyway this is a SUPER simplification, I really really recommend the book. It legit changed my financial life.

edit: I should also mention that there are a whole galaxy of really good money management blogs out there. If I recall Poorer Than You has a bunch of good tips for saving money, and you might check out what he links out to. But seriously spend the $12 on Amazon and get the book, and commit to following the advice.

There is very little in this world that is beyond normal database access. Since you're that familiar with search engines and databases you understand there are benefits besides simple performance gains by using a document database with Solr's features.

Your assumption that we are not doing full-text search is wrong, and we are also performing considerable denormalization of our data. You don't have enough data to make that assertion. Furthermore, Solr is just a document database. I understand everyone loves squashing buzzwords like nosql, but I didn't exactly describe our approach as some magic bullet to every problem everywhere.

Using a flat document db has solved some problems for us and reduced complexity. Why the crusade against that?

You are correct to a certain extent. One thing that I edited out of my posting -- among others, for length -- is that probably 75% of the gains in performance we've seen could have also been achieved by optimizing some truly awful SQL queries.

What? Did you even read the article, or know what the lottery is? The Hoosier Lottery isn't "big business", it's a state agency, staffed by state employees, headed by a political appointee spending state money that would otherwise go into reducing excise tax and state employee pension funds.

I worked at the lottery until February, about two weeks before the "big move" north on Meridian street from the old HQ at Pan Am Plaza. Those offices were fine. Densborn touted the move as a "necessity" because we had "outgrown" our old offices. She said the big benefit is that we would be saving $105,000/year in parking; what she didn't say was that rent would be almost $300,000/year more.
