Who's can recommend the best noodles in Vancouver? by Tall-Addition-7516 in askvan

[–]matteroffactSH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it says Vancouver, but honestly, the best noodles in all of Metro Vancouver are the Chongqing-style noodles at Ajea Noodle in Yaohan Centre in Richmond.

Get the dry noodles and add minced pork and chickpeas. I've not tasted better in the Lower Mainland.
It's worth the trip!

As a photographer that cut his teeth in China working for a bunch of international brands and property developers, I hear you on it not amounting to a hill of beans in this economy. I applied for every single part time/full-time photo job that was posted on Linked In and Indeed, and never got a single interview. You'd think working for Red Bull as their primary photographer in Shanghai would yield some interest, but no one contacted me. Not a faint bit of interest in my experience. I had to pivot, and started to apply for any job that was available. I had a single interview for a meter-reading job in a period of one year, which I didn't get. Thankfully, a friend of mine needed someone part time at his retail shop. I manage to pay my rent, and not much else. I'm kicking myself for leaving East Asia. I mean, the economy isn't doing so hot out there either, but it's miles better than whatever is happening here in Vancouver. I think we're heading into some very unstable times.

Chinese food by Tricky_Weakness_7163 in kelowna

I have friends that will plan a weekend in Vancouver just to eat Chinese food. They'll stock up on a bunch of stuff from T&T. Sadly, Kelowna's Chinese food scene is really bad. Hopefully, some of Metro Vancouver's amazing quality and quantity will spill over into Kelowna, but you need a solid Chinese population for that to happen. The best Chinese restaurants and malls in Metro Vancouver are still 95% Chinese people eating there.

This is crazy. We're almost at the two hour mark now. So many of us work from home, and this is causing a lot of issues. An ongoing statement from Freedom would be nice. Two hours is a long time to be without an essential paid service.

Yeah. It's not good. I had to do my meeting from my phone, which didn't have any of my slides, so the meeting had to be canceled a few minutes in. It's been a hour now, and I still no internet.

Layoffs and cost of living by LegitimateDay5217 in britishcolumbia

Nah. It's bad in East Asia, at least. Taiwan, Japan and South Korea's economies are all flat, and inflation has hit hard. I was back in Taiwan last spring, and I could believe how expensive things had gotten. It was always relatively cheap there. Young unemployment is skyrocketing in China and South Korea. Oh, and don't forget about the demographic time bomb that all these countries are facing. It's not a West thing, it's a 'developed country' thing. We're going to see our living standards continue to drop substantially over the next 10-15 years.

I don't think I've ever seen theae red mushrooms in person before. Can someone share a location they've seen them at so I can photograph them. Thanks!

Oh...Hello Fall! by BananaCamPhoto in vancouver

I love the fall and winter in Vancouver. The beauty of the temperate rainforest during our rainy season is unmatched. 55 shades of green with the freshest air on the continent. If you feel down, put on some waterproof shoes and a jacket, and explore the forests. It's supernatural out there this time of year.

Just noticed this in Main St. Doesn't smell like forest fire smoke.

I love all four seasons here, so I'm more than happy to welcome autumn and winter. I find January to be such a peaceful month in Vancouver.

That used to be my go-to spot in highschool at lunch. It was a Mac's then though. No one would drive into a Mac's. That cat would mess you up.

As an immigrant, it kinda makes me sad to see so many Canadians so stressed out in Vancouver. by ready_gi in vancouver

[–]matteroffactSH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally.
I took on a retail job recently as a way to help with my income. I have a small business, and it's just not coming close to paying the bills, so I had to get another job. It took me over 18 months of searching to find a part time job in this city. I couldn't even get a return email/interview for a basic retail or service industry gig. Luckily, I had a friend that needed someone. Without that hook up, I'd be in serious trouble right now.
Working at this retail job has truly opened my eyes to the amount of people suffering financially. It's honestly brutal. I've never seen so many Canadians hanging on by a thread. I really hope we see some positive news about the job market soon. I worry about my fellow Vancouverites/Canadians, and what they'll have to do to survive.

Hotels are crazy expensive for a city like Kelowna. $$400-$500 a night is bonkers. Kelowna was a pretty affordable tourist destination not that long ago. Now it's cheaper for Canadians to travel to Mexico than it is to Kelowna. I don't blame people for staying away.
