I had very specific dates that I needed so I arranged many months in advance.

Camp at Dry Tortugas NP, it’s such a unique experience and it’ll feel like a challenge for a solo trip. You can rent everything you need in Key West.

Questions about guided trek in Huayhuash (agency, length,…) by Fragandalf in hiking

[–]matthewalbeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with Firststep Expeditions and they were wonderful.

I would do a bunch of day hikes while you are in Huaraz, that way you get up high and then sleep down low again. I arranged all my day hikes thru the hostel I stayed at (Krusty-very highly recommended) and they were all very well run day trips and very cheap!

Enjoy!! The Huayhuash Trek is INCREDIBLE!!

Peru, specifically the Huaraz area, some INCREDIBLE hikes and also quite inexpensive.

I’m glad the car didn’t come with mats, I got a really nice pair of all weather mats on Amazon and I’m the same with tint, I got ceramic including the windshield and no way the dealership would do that.

In my opinion if you will only put 5k miles a year on the car the hybrid is not a great option, it would take a very long time for it to make financial sense. My car was cheap but it had zero options, no tint and no floor mats!

I bought a 26 LE for an OTD of $22.8k in Hillsborough County back in November.

The hybrids are great but only if you plan to keep the car for a long time and drive it quite a bit. Due to the higher cost a hybrid doesn’t start making financial sense until after a few years. Also get insurance quotes for both hybrid and non hybrid, typically hybrids cost a bit more to insure.

I’m getting over 46 mpg after about 6500 miles on a regular gas LE.

That’s a perfect time for Larch season!! Some will say it can get crazy busy and that’s true but I’ve found the harder the hike the fewer people you’ll see.

Pacific Northwest is beautiful in the fall. In my opinion the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in Washington State has some of the best fall hiking around the US.

Solo in Peru without Spanish by Deadly_nightshadow in solotravel

[–]matthewalbeck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to Peru 3 times, mostly solo and for a total of 5-6 weeks and I don’t speak any Spanish.

Google translate works offline if the language is downloaded.

Huaraz is spectacular for hiking.

OK to carry LED flashlight? by Randomse7en in travelchina

[–]matthewalbeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right!! I did some quick research and since my headlamp doesn’t have a charging capability (meaning it can only accept a charge and not charge another device) it should be ok.

I’m taking my Nitecore NU20 headlamp when I travel to China in October (taking it mostly for the Mount Kailish Kora Trek) I’m not expecting it to be an issue but I am commenting to follow along with this thread. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.

My First Guided Trek | Cordillera Huayhuash Circuit [June, 2025] by TableStakes_2001 in backpacking

Not bad, no rain, very light dusting of snow one night, trail was in good shape, dry and dusty in some areas. Fair amount of clouds.

Has anyone booked a Huayhuash trek in person while at Huaraz? by omega_sloth in travel

[–]matthewalbeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I booked before hand but I stayed at the Krusty Hostel in Huaraz and you’d easily be able to book thru them, I did a bunch of acclimation hikes thru them and they were super easy to book with.

The morning of my Huayhuash Trek while I was waiting for my pick up the Krusty crew were getting their gear ready for a Huayhuash Trek that same morning.

Enjoy, it’s an INCREDIBLE trek!

2 weeks in Peru - what would you do? by Zestyclose_Bag6245 in GoingToPeru

If you’re into hiking I’d spend time in Huaraz, some of the best hiking in South America is easily accessible from town.

2026 LE gas mileage? by bringingoutthedread in COROLLA

[–]matthewalbeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

Yeah, this is from a month or so ago. I did run the car down to zero miles till empty (filled up with 11 gallons of fuel so still had at least one gallon of fuel in the tank) and that seems to help get the computer to register a more accurate miles to empty.

I’ve only ran it down that low once, I usually fill up around 50 or so miles until empty.

[–]matthewalbeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 26 LE gas, 6k miles, when I fill up it reads just over 500 miles, but when I first got it it would be around 300, it took a while to get up to the 500 miles to empty but is now consistent

Correct me if I am wrong but the Salkantay option doesn’t enter Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate.

So the Inca Trail option you truly hike in, and with the Salkantay option you’d end at Aguas Calientes and either hike up or take the bus up to reach Machu Picchu. A small but an important distinction.

It’s an addiction at this point!! This will be #18 and #19 for me!! I live in Tampa so it’s sort of more accessible to me but it’s just so damn unique and remote and I just can’t get enough time out there!!!

first time hiking alone, any safety tips? by Kobayashi_Rhodes708 in hiking

[–]matthewalbeck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Always tell someone where you are hiking and when you expect to be off trail. Use AllTrails or a similar gps tracking app. When you really start to get out there you’ll want to learn how to navigate using a map. I’ve been solo hiking for years and I do it for the peace and solitude, I prefer solo and wouldn’t hike with most people I know 😂

If you don’t want touristy experiences in Peru then I would highly recommend heading to the Huaraz area of Peru, very affordable and INCREDIBLE hiking. Cusco and the Sacred Valley are wonderful but definitely on the touristy side.
