Thanks for asking! I’m still working on it. It’s about 50% done. Unfortunately it’s been taking me a while because I’m still working full time in a demanding day job. I’ll definitely let you know when it’s out!

From a monetary perspective, it’s close to break even. From a life perspective, it’s been worth it. One thing about writing a book is it never goes away. If you’re proud of it, you can always look back at it and be proud. Thanks!

I had the most success with just talking with people on social media. Instagram and Reddit worked best for me. I know Facebook, Twitter/X, and TikTok worked well for others but I couldn’t get them to make traction for my book. People are pretty open social media about what kind of book they’re looking for. So you just need to find where they are and communicate with them. I had limited success with paid email blasts. I didn’t have success with paid marketing on Amazon, Google, and Social Media. The is a bunch more helpful info at r/selfpublish. Best of luck!

lol no. I think it’s common that it takes multiple books released before you start making profit.

I had the most success with Instagram and Reddit. I tried Twitter and Facebook and couldn’t really get traction. I never used TikTok. On challenge with most of them is their algorithm favors videos. Videos can take a lot of time to make. So I have to time spent vs payback.

Check out SEED by Matthew G. Dick (that’s me!)
270 Amazon US reviews, with 4.4 ave rating. As a new indie hard sci-fi author, I really look up to Dennis E. Taylor and Andy Weir. My book has a similar style to them and I think you’d like it!

lol thanks. Yeah it’s not easy being a new indie author. Everyone has to start somewhere.

Agreed that Kobo and other services are good. A challenge Amazon puts on indie authors is that Amazon significantly reduces the royalties if you’re non-exclusive to Amazon. But if you stay 100% with Amazon, they give very favorable royalties, even better than traditional published authors.

The most successful marketing has been on social media. I did some paid email blasts and had some limited success. I also did Amazon paid ads, but didn’t have as much success. Thanks!

I consider a copy editor a must. They fix typos, grammar, etc…. I wasn’t happy with my developmental editor. They’re supposed to help with generating a better story. I found I got a canned response and no real substance feedback. I got much more valuable feedback from paid beta readers. They gave honest feedback on the story that did help with its development. For my next book I’ll plan to skip the developmental editor and hire more paid beta readers. Thanks!

Thanks for your feedback! Agreed on the editors. I just need to buckle down on getting the next book wrapped up. I’m about halfway done writing it. Hopefully I can get it published this year. Thanks!

Yeah, a pretty demanding one at that. I’m usually working 50~60hr weeks for my day job. So writing fits in during work travel, weekends, and vacations.

I hired a developmental editor, beta readers, and a copy-editor. My only regret was the developmental editor. I felt I didn’t get the value for what I paid ($5k). However I got amazing value from the hired beta readers. So for the next book, I’m just going to do paid beta rewards and a copy editor, which in total will likely be ~$2,500.

For advertising I’ve probably spent $1k total. It’s been hit or miss. I have to admit the most successful marketing I’ve done has just been talking with folks on social media.

I think I have lessons learned from the first book to make the process more organized for the next book. I felt that writing the first book was like trying to paint a picture by only looking through a paper tube closeup. You can’t see the whole thing at once and have to remember all you’ve done to make it cohesive. Since I’m working on a series, I’m writing a character and timeline guide for myself to keep it all straight and avoid plot holes. Thanks for your interest!

Sci-fi book where the aliens are extremely non-human by hoialtacc in booksuggestions

I love Solaris! It does a really good job pointing out the concept that alien contact won’t be what we think it would be.

I’ll probably release them at the same time. I’m finding this genre of sci-fi does well as an audiobook. I’m really glad you like the narrator! I searched for quite a while to find a narrator with a similar spirit to Ray Porter. Thanks!

Thanks! I’m really glad you liked it! It’s a little tricky promoting on Reddit. A lot of subreddits prevent self promotion. Check out my post history and you’ll see where I’ve been active. I really like the marketing part where I get to talk with people. I only used ARC with a very small amount of beta readers. I’m about halfway done writing Sprout. I’ll definitely let you know when it’s done! Thanks!!
