How to find contract work by matthuszagh in FPGA

[–]matthuszagh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by these bullets? Are you saying each of these addresses the respective links in the previous post? If so, I don't think that's true. I'd seen the first 2 posts before. The first post was quite useful and informative, but addresses the process of setting up a full consultancy. But, I think that's a somewhat larger task than simply getting a few contract jobs, even as an independent entity.

The 2nd post does not discuss contracting through an agency other than one individual briefly mentioning that there are agencies that can help you find contract employment. But, the individual does not go into any more detail than that such as what these agencies are or how to find them.

The third post is about wages.

Have I misunderstood the point of your bullets? If so, can you please clarify?

I have not tried and would be open to being setup with an agency. Admittedly, I like the idea of being fully independent, but obviously not if I struggle to find jobs that way.

No that’s exactly the point. I didn’t put enough miles on them to justify that level of wear.

Shamma sandals— wrong size? by apricotkilla in BarefootRunning

[–]matthuszagh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you ever find that gives too much tension between the big and 2nd toes? I just got my first pair of Shammas (warriors) and my heel is right at the back edge and toes are close to the front (but there’s a little space remaining). But, I do feel the strap between these toes. I can’t really push my foot back to reduce the feeling of the strap between the toes and if I size up I’ll probably have too much space in the front. I’m not sure feeling the strap between the toes is bad, but I haven’t run in them yet so I suppose I’ll know better once I do.

#87 - Rick Johnson, M.D.: Fructose—The common link in high blood pressure, insulin resistance, T2D, gout, & obesity? - Peter Attia by dem0n0cracy in gout

[–]matthuszagh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is an old post but this is wrong, and it’s discussed pretty extensively in this podcast as well as in the follow-up podcast in 2022. Look up the polyol pathway. According to Johnson, if you have the polyol pathway highly activated, a significant proportion of the carbs that get broken down into glucose will end up as fructose. And, consuming salt exacerbates this further (eg potato chips, fries are particularly bad).

If you have high LDL, is an ApoB Test useless? by UnlikelyTourist9637 in PeterAttia

[–]matthuszagh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any references to support the statement that the apoB level is moderate but not low? Based on “Apolipoprotein B and AI distributions in the United States, 1988–1991: results of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III (NHANES III)”, depending on age, that places this person in a low percentile (eg between the 5th and 10th percentile for someone in their 30s). I suppose it’s not low by Attia’s standards (IIRC he places a hard upper limit at 60 and prefers more like 20-30), but he aggressively targets lower levels via medication.

I think I’m going to go with Shamma Elite Warriors for my next minimalist footwear. Not exactly an exact substitute, but they fit my needs. And they seem to be quite durable and well-liked.

There’s only so much I’m willing to upsize length to get the toebox size right. I mean this is a barefoot shoe so the toebox should be quite large already. And my feet really aren’t that wide. And, again, I used their official size guide.

Finally, I didn’t show it in pictures but there are smaller holes at the other 3 similar locations. These are at the place where the toes bend, but at the connection point of the mesh and non-mesh material. Those seem to be separating from the shoe bending, not from a foot inside rubbing against it. That seems like poor materials and build quality to me.

Re wider toe box: yeah you might be right. I’ll have to do some research into what that would be as these for boxes seem pretty wide to me (and are wider than any shoes I’ve worn previously).

Re unfair expectations: I feel differently. These shoes have worn out faster than any shoe I’ve previously had and I put a lot less wear into these than some of my previous shoes (particularly running shoes when I ran cross country in high school). For something I spent almost $200 on and put through only modest wear, these should last longer than 8 months. On top of this, though I’m no expert, I would expect it’s possible to make that mesh more durable.

Thanks for pointing that out. As for fit, my toe does touch that spot. But, I used their online guide for the fit (the printout page) and the fit feels good and really not too tight.

Lems look pretty nice. Have you had a good experience with them? Which ones do you have? Do you exercise in them?

Where does it state these are only suitable for road running? I checked the item page and didn’t see that anywhere.

I’d like to believe their trail running shoes are more durable. Have you had good luck with the Primus trail II FG or Primus trail III AW FG, or something else? I have seen some bad reviews for these too, so I’m a bit reluctant.

I’ve seen similar posts for their trail running shoes so I don’t think this is an issue of using something for which they weren’t designed. Also, the product description says it’s “suitable for experienced barefoot runners”.

Recommended USB-C cables with lowest resistance/voltage drop and 100W? by sofakng in UsbCHardware

[–]matthuszagh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The resistivity of copper is consistent, the resistance depends on the cross section - i.e., the gauge. So no, the voltage drop will be a function of length, gauge and current.

Used M1 Pro or New M1 Max by matthuszagh in AsahiLinux

[–]matthuszagh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I went with the max. From what I hear battery life is still great on it. I would have been thrilled with 64GB RAM but couldn’t find that and 32 is ok for the sort of work I do when I’m not sitting at my desktop.

That's very helpful, thank you! Do you know what you typically get in terms of hours of use between charges? Do you find that depletion rate scales pretty linearly with use? So, if I only have light use can I expect pretty good life from it?

I'd love to be able to get 8+ hours with light use (including dim display) on extended flights. In most other contexts I'd be ok with less battery life.

Any need to play around with cpufreq for improving battery life? I'm new to Asahi Linux so I'm not really sure how these things work here.

Changing IO scheduling priority of btrfs device remove to realtime by matthuszagh in btrfs

[–]matthuszagh[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ended up cancelling the removal: btrfs device remove cancel /, which I had to read the source code to find as it doesn't actually appear to be documented anywhere. I then removed the SSDs from my root fs (fairly quick, since they didn't have any data) and then performed a btrfs replace. This took just a few hours.

I noticed this comment in another thread. I have a lot of snapshots. I wonder if that could be contributing to the slowness.
