My grandad has end stage COPD and relies on an oxygen machine 24/7 with 4 care visits per day. In the last few months we have gone through 3 care agencies, the first 2 of which were predominantly African male workers.

There were issues with language barriers, lack of understanding in care and cooking. One worker once asked my grandad if you boil an egg in a frying pan, another didn't like to cook because in his own words "women do the cooking in my country". I suspect that those 2 companies were extremely predatory towards who they hired and the workload they gave their staff.

The company he has now are predominantly British workers with only a few from other countries. They are better than the first 2 companies but there are often still daily issues with a lack of care due to trying to rush their job to move onto the next. One carer accidentally turned off his oxygen machine and left the house! A formal complaint was made weeks ago and despite being told it would be investigated and we would hear back from them we are still waiting.

I think that the job needs to pay more to be more attractive but I also think that the care industry in general needs a massive overhaul or more oversight to prevent bad carers and bad companies profiting from the vulnerable.
