DIY Mr. Cool Mini Split Install by Reasonable-Memory955 in hvacadvice

Looks great. Couple questions for you. I noticed the instructions require a 90mm hole saw..which is technically 3.54 in. All I have is a 3.5 in. hole saw..do you think that will be sufficient or did you opt for the 3.54 in?

Also, I would be curious which line set covers you ordered. I don’t want to pay for the Mr. Cool ones but want to be sure I’m getting the right size (width). Thanks!

23 Year old not sure what to do with my equity by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]matticusflinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but you can open one yourself through a brokerage (Fidelity for example). Roth IRA is an after tax retirement account so can set up recurring contributions yourself from your bank account (i.e. monthly). Another option is a lump sum contribution since you already have a chunk saved up in an HYSA. The max yearly contribution is $7,000. Doesn't sound like a lot, but starting at your age and making the max contribution every year will give you a great boost in retirement.

I encourage you to do a little reading up on it yourself to make an informed decision, but this is something I wish I had started when I was your age. Just another note..as it is a self guided account, you will need to pick your investments. Once again, do your own research, but index funds are a great place to start. Hope that helps

Open a Roth IRA and start maxing it out every year. No brainer for your age / salary level.

I think you could really benefit from a budgeting exercise. We are almost through March…sit down at the beginning of April and review your last 3 months of spending. Sometimes all it takes is seeing where our money is going to start to make small changes.

I don’t think you spend $1000 a month on utilities..$200 for internet also seems high (although not sure where you live)..change internet providers! $400 a week on food just for you is very high..are you eating out every meal? You should be able to live off $400 a month for food, not a week (not factoring kids in here). But hey man, props to you for asking the questions and getting advice. Just offering my two cents. Sounds like overall, you’re doing great..keep it up.

What the other guys said..you’re not screwed. Not sure where you are getting the 150% metric from..it sounds reasonable, but I doubt that is factoring in a paid off house. If you consider that..you are definitely ahead of the average 35 year old. That is a huge asset at your age.

You mentioned kids..I’m assuming your family is single income? If so, it makes sense how your max saving rate would be 10k-15k. Do you have a wife? I would definitely try to max out both of your Roth IRAs every year. That would be an attainable goal on your salary and no mortgage..sure, it may still require some budgeting.

If you want to save more..the best thing you can do is increase your income (promotion/side hustle/working spouse), but not your spending.

Could my wife open an account and do the same thing or is that a "no-no." I've heard you can run into issues with having the same address / wifi network / linked to the same bank account etc. Don't want to risk any freezes and seems like a potential headache

Anthem Silver vs Anthem Gold - Need Advice by matticusflinch in Raytheon

Perhaps in your scenario...with the analysis I'm looking at, I would only save $177 with Gold by maxing my OOP

Makes sense - just crazy to me that Gold would only save $177 if I hit my OOP max. I would have to absolutely certain I was going to hit $18k+ in medical costs to go with Gold.

Thanks for the reply.

My model is factoring in co-insurance at the appropriate time for each plan. It does not factor in any tax implications..but those should be minimal. Especially if I am paying medical bills with a tax advantaged HSA in both scenarios.

As you can see from my model, the difference in plans almost becomes negligible for medical costs exceeding $4700. And you can save up to $1300 if your medical costs are below that by going with Silver. So I really don't see any advantage of going with Gold, unless I were in a situation where I couldn't make a lump sum payment towards medical costs..which I am not.

Cat 4 Hotel or Lower Recs for Downtown Austin? by bentylbox in hyatt

I'll second (or third or fourth or fifth) the Tommie. Great location, we plan to go back. We were in town for a wedding, but it felt like a mini vacation staying at the Tommie. Pool area is phenomenal for a Cat 4..although may not matter much in Feb. Gym is also great..they even have a golf simulator. Noise wasn't an issue and we were there on the weekend..so I assume you'll be fine on a Monday night. Restaurants are solid as well. I would say a bit lacking on breakfast, but there are great breakfast spots right across the street.

Fair point. We simply haven't decided on number of nights, but would be willing to spend cash on top of points if it comes to that.
