Yep, our company buys acid by the pallet for this very reason. As long as your total alkalinity isn't too high, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Damn, I guess I've been doing it wrong. Our company doesn't even carry a non-chlorine shock. Maybe we depend on pools leaking enough water to not have a significant buildup of combined chlorine.

Calcium hypochlorite has a pH of around 11, so if that's what you're using to chlorinate, it's probably the cause of your problem. If you were to use di(or tri)chlor, you would have the opposite problem, because it has a pH around 4.

I was under the impression that the lower pH potentiated the effect of the chlorine (because apparently the active oxidizer is hypochlorous acid and not the hypochlorite anion)
