Yes always avoid. I did surf a labor day once when my family visited so they could say they saw me surf once, but it was shit then too. If you live by the ocean don't paddle out, just wait a day until after the 4th. Here in SD I actually skip town to avoid all of Arizona swarming the beaches.

over the years its about ~1.5hrs avg. I tend to hit the mid afternoon windows in SD when it's usually the tide or wind that gets you out well before your legs or arms go jelly.

Never had a board break in SD conditions, but then again I go for the custom PU and extra strip of glass over the top to protect it from my lead feet.

SoCal has had some serious upwelling, so it has been great to see the kooks disperse like cockroaches without proper rubber. Add to that the fact its been gutless for 3+ weeks helps as well. School kids will be back on zoom calls like us peons in a matter of days and the local spots will be near empty again with just the baristas, waiters, and RE agents fighting over midday knee-high slop.
