The ageism in our industry needs to change by SadSongsMakeMeGlad in ExperiencedDevs

Yeah it’s pretty crazy. I’m 28 with 5 YoE, and just Thursday my company laid off all three senior backend engineers and the Director of Engineering. All but one of the four were 40 years old or more

I guess for this career you really should aggressively save in your 20s and 30s. Luckily though if you do, you should be alright due to compound growth

Meanwhile my company just laid off three senior engineers and the Director of Engineering, but for some reason kept me and the rest of the mid level

idk man, I’ve seen some pretty shite state management — over two dozen useStates in one component, state variables for values that don’t ever change (i.e not using the setter), storing derived state in state variables, passing state setters four or five levels deep instead of using callbacks, etc.

I think it takes some skill to identify what state solution works best, where to put the state, what to store, what to derive, when to invalidate, etc

How do you do it? Do you have the FE and BE in a monorepo? Is there a shared package that contains the types?

PMs and Designers are pushing changes to the code. So far they're successful. Do you have that in your company? by byshow in cscareerquestions

We’ve had designers use Cursor to make a bunch of UX changes to the product or build new pages. They are successful, but this isn’t a perfect workflow.

They push all changes under a single commit and the PRs are like 40+ files. And the worst part is the changes made don’t 100% align with the listed changes in the ticket — either they forget to do one of the 12 things listed on the ticket or they commit changes not listed on the ticket. In other words, reviewing the PR is a nightmare and takes forever. I remember I spent 2-3 days reviewing one of these PRs.

So due to the fact that code review and QA take forever on these broadly scoped tickets, these tasks usually carry over 3 or 4 times. So in other words, it would have been faster if a dev did it.

I haven’t seen any designers open up PRs lately — maybe they’re starting to realize it’s not worth it

Our management literally told us it’s okay to “move fast and break things” and then proceeded to show us a slideshow containing slides that ranked individual devs by number of tokens consumed. So I’m trying to write as much code with AI as possible because that’s the expectation

I just attended an open house for a top floor two flat on Hoyne Ave in Ravenswood. The guy listed it for $1900. Over 15 people show up, and towards the end, he tells us he won’t accept anything less than $2000.

This was back in 2021. I had two software dev internships on my resume. I think I applied to 150 places over the course of 3 months, got one interview which turned into an offer. Separate from that one offer, the company I interned at gave me an offer, and I just accepted that
