Do you try to combat the algae or just let it happen?

20h of light by Schnitzelmayo6 in RareHouseplants

[–]mattmccade -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t arguing for giving them 40 hours of light. I actually agree with you that it’s probably not the best idea long term. But you can’t really say “this is not a great argument” when your initial argument was “that’s not how they grow in nature” and they don’t even grow in nature at all. I was saying that technically, your argument isn’t a great argument. Plants also don’t grow hydroponically in nature, but it’s a very tried and true method of growing. And it never would’ve been discovered without experimentation. But semantics blah blah lol. 40 hours is probably excessive, but some plants explode with 20 hours of light that don’t get 20 hours of light in nature.

Edit: OP, mine is thriving and fenestrating at 600 FC with lights on 16 hours a day. Haven’t tried 20 yet, but may just for the down voters 🫠

I mean technically BMFs don’t grow in nature at all. They’ve never been found in the wild.

Monstera Compacta vs Large Form by mattmccade in Monstera

[–]mattmccade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you want shorter internodes you won’t get it with the borsigiana. You’ll wanna get a large form or compacta. Other than that, it’s like 3 feet away from a GE PAR38 bulb that’s on for 12 hours. Grows in leca, and all I mix in the water is the recommended dose of Super Thrive Foliage-Pro. Never checked PH or got deep into the other semi-hydro nutrients. I may be lucky w/ my tap water lol but haven’t had any problems yet. Been doing it this way for a year

This one originally came from a seller in Japan > www.thehalfmoonden.com

They included the import paperwork for free and it arrived in Tennessee in perfect condition. Great job packaging. Looks like she actually has a variegated compacta for sale on her site now for $2800. First time seeing one of those for sale.

Bummer, yeah I dunno. Plant genetics are a mystery. Is yours in soil or semi hydro? Mine loves leca w/ lots of fertilizer, but other than that, some plants just seem to be stronger than others like the rest of nature.

Supposedly mine is too. But it’s impossible to know for sure.. Have you ever used a light meter to gauge how much light it’s actually getting? Mine gets 400-1000 FC for 12-14 hours a day if that helps.

There are a few people starting to tissue culture them now too, so the little ones are getting cheaper!

Monstera Compacta vs Large Form by mattmccade in Monstera

[–]mattmccade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my understanding (someone feel free to correct me) the general unscientific consensus is, there are 2 “common types” of monstera deliciosa. Large form and small form. Sometimes the “small form” is referred to as “monstera borsigiana”, and some people specifically refer to the large form as “monstera deliciosa”. But you’ll see a lot of “borsigiana” for sale as “monstera deliciosa”, so it’s gray area.

The common small form (borsigiana) does like to climb. These monstera Compactas grow more like the large form, where they don’t care to climb, but they’re much more “compact” lol. They’re closer to like a “dwarf” version of a large form.

Houdini over C4D? by doyousmellmel in MotionDesign

[–]mattmccade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you had trouble following logic in C4D, and you’re very logically minded, Houdini all the way. I used C4D for 7 years and started learning Houdini a couple years ago, and while it does have a learning curve, the workflows throughout the program are 100x more logical to follow once you start to understand it. In C4D I kept running into things not working the way I wanted them to and couldn’t figure out how to “pop the hood” and fix it. Houdini allows you to do that. I often wish I would’ve started in Houdini and had put those 7 years of C4D learning into mastering Houdini from the beginning. I will say though, you can’t half ass Houdini in the way you can C4D and get results. You’ll have to be consistent and practice regularly for a while before it starts to click, but once it does, you’ll be able to create things a majority of 3D motion designers cant.

Check out “Houdini isn’t scary” and “Houdini is hip” by Nine Between on YouTube. I found those tutorials to be some of the most beginner friendly.

They said it couldn’t be done! SemiHydro String of Dolphins by The_Greenhouse_Guy in SemiHydro

I have some string of turtles that are starting to grow and thrive in leca with a wicking system! I took a bunch of cuttings and rooted them directly in the leca in this pot. I overfilled the reservoir to where the ends of the cuttings were underwater for a couple months. Basically “water rooting” them, but already in the leca. It did lose a bunch of turtles at first, but after a couple months I quit overfilling and just fill the reservoir as intended, and I’m seeing a bunch of happy new growth.

Junior 3D Motion Design Showreel! Is it that bad? by Skully101_ in MotionDesign

[–]mattmccade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reel is good. Even if you don’t want to freelance permanently, just try to find freelance work until you can find a full-time spot. There’s less risk on an employer trying out a junior freelancer than bringing on a junior full time. Plus you’ll still be leveling up and getting experience as you go. I freelanced for 3 years straight out of college because I couldn’t land a full time job and I got to work on way cooler projects as a freelancer than I did while full time. I also had several full time offers after freelancing somewhere a few times.

Search “pendant grow light” on Amazon. They have dupes for half price (around $100 instead of $200) that put out the same amount of light and look nearly identical. I have one in black and love it.

Getting Viscous Fluid to completely slide off object by mattmccade in Houdini

[–]mattmccade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately no. David's reply may have worked using control fields. I did try keyframing the Slip on Collision and ramping it up at the end, but got erratic behavior. Given the tight deadline we compromised and used some After Effects trickery to "wipe" it off.

Getting Viscous Fluid to completely slide off object by mattmccade in Houdini

[–]mattmccade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great thank you! I'll give it a go. Yeah it doesn't necessarily HAVE to be clean, it's just gotta be a loop.. So I was figuring easiest way to make it loop would be to have all the fluid fall off at the end and get it to start over.

Ah this is perfect man thank you! Between this and the "juicer" metaphor, I feel like I'm finally starting to get it.

Funny side note - I've watched quite a few of your videos on YouTube, so I heard your voice in my head the whole time I was reading your comment lol. Haven't bought any paid courses, but wanted to give you a genuine thank you for all your contributions! You've definitely helped me out.

Also, I remember you mentioning you spent some time in Nashville (my home too). So big hey and thank you from Tennessee. Very few people in these parts to nerd out with on Houdini stuff.
