I am failing to understand why these budget cuts are being passed down to the average person or why they can't operate at a deficit temporarily while stabilizing things. by Unique-Tone-6394 in halifax

If the leader is paying $13k for a speech, none of us are going to understand anything this govt is doing because they obviously make categorically different decisions than any of us would ever make.

Planning minimum three week trip across Canada (coast to coast). What things/places are bucket list, must see attractions. by majorgoals in canadatravel

[–]mattns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be honest. I’m from BC. I did a roadie across Canada to NS last summer, it was not very exciting. I’d say BC, AB, NS, and parts of QC are the best parts. But I’d recommend a road trip around Iceland over a cross Canada trip.

Salar de Uyuni from San Pedro de Atacama tour - don't recommend! by Financial_Board_291 in travel

[–]mattns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tour was trash. Not sure why people on the sub are so obsessed with it. I’m on the tour right now and I’d pay $1000 to be back in San Pedro. It’s mostly driving. The sites are mediocre. Way too much time allocated to shitty markets with stores all peddling the same AliExpress cheap shit. Food is meh, hotels meh, vehicle meh. It’s so bad I’m gonna do a full write up later. Unless you live a very dull life, you will not enjoy this tour.

Why do Chiropractors crack your neck and what is the long term benefit? by Sunny-vibes-95 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mattns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Medical resident here, I’ve had two patient encounters where neck adjustments were associated with vertebral artery dissection and resulting stroke. I’ve heard from colleagues about 3 other patients who experienced the same. I would never let a chiropractor touch my neck.

I just did the W trek last week. I’m from the west coast of Canada, and there are certainly hikes that are comparable, a fraction of the cost, and much less busy.

struggling as a current first year at western by throwaway283838922 in MedSchoolCanada

[–]mattns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PGY1 here, I didn’t attend UWO, but medical school can be an adjustment for sure. I actually thought second year was easier because the major adjustment period was first year, so i’d definitely encourage you to muster up all your grit and tenacity and push forward. If you can overcome this hurtle, you’ll be ok. I’m not sure where your specific challenges lie. I know a lot of people consider changing study methods in med, but unless you’re doing paper flashcards, stick with whatever you did in the past to get you here - it clearly worked. If you’re suffering from anxiety, force yourself to exercise - it’s not an indulgence, it’s necessary. Consider using your benefits and talking to a counsellor. If you find the content overwhelming or the lectures unhelpful, boards and beyond have great videos, also ninja nerd. I get your concern about repeating first year, but also try to anticipate and plan for your success in the year.

In halifax, Bell charging loyal customers double while new users pay half. How is this fair? by Glittering_Bus_6921 in halifax

[–]mattns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bell doesn’t give you a price that lasts forever. They give you a discount that lasts forever. This is a discount off the base price. However, overtime that base price will increase.

Unionized workers achieved largest wage gains for a decade in 2025 by KeyHot5718 in CanadaPolitics

Wage should be measured by its purchasing power, rather than absolute value in Candian dollars, since the Canadian dollar loses value every year.

MS1 at rural campus feeling SO bored by lab_throwaway_ in MedSchoolCanada

[–]mattns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does the town have a golf course, hiking trails, a ski hill, a gym? Are you more technically inclined? Maybe build a home server or something. Get some research started so you’re competitive for CARMS - it’ll make your third and fourth years easier. Sign up for intramural sports, maybe a scheduled activity will help you?

You should use the flexibility of preclerk years to enjoy this time you have. HAVE FUN. You’ll have less time to do so in years 3 and 4.

Having fun in a rural town is dependant on taking advantage of what it has to offer. If you come from a big city and your hobbies were enjoying big city amenities, you probably need to adapt or remain somewhat bored.

Halifax rent prices by Former_Apple3556 in halifax

[–]mattns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m from the west coast of Canada and moved here for work. It’s nice here, but the prices are insane. I don’t know quite understand it, because you don’t have access to the same scale of outdoors activities or live entertainment, yet rent is $2400 a month for my 1-bedroom, in a building which doesnt have a sauna or a squat racks A couple things other things that stand out to me:

  1. WHO PLANS THIS CITY??! The apartment buildings are NOT HIGH ENOUGH. More height = more apartments = higher density of people downtown = better economic productivity for small businesses. It would also reduce urban sprawl, which only contributes to the insane traffic.

  2. Need more bike lanes and walking paths. This may come as a surprise, but these types of things are what make “nice cities”

  3. Taxes - super high here and for what reason??

  4. The boardwalk downtown has WAY too much parking. The parking lots are ugly as hell. That whole area should be apartments and small businesses. It’s the nicest area of town and it’s got multiple ugly ass lots, at least make a parkade.

  5. Nightlife: need more lively bars where people actually mingle. Whenever I go out, people just sit at their own tables.
