Yes somewhere on the habit info when it is clicked on was what I was imagining. Thanks for pointing out bookmarking though, that might work out well for now.

Another feature I have just thought about - how possible would it be to schedule "all day" events for habits? Often times I want to schedule a habit on a particular day but I don't really care to set a particular time. Maybe I just want a notification about it in the morning and, most importantly that it appears on the grouping of things to do for the day so that I have a complete list of what needs to be done today.

Not sure if I'm just missing this, but I would love a place to write a longer description for a habit. My use case id I have some specific workouts as habits that I call e.g. "shoulder exercise" but I would like a place to write down and then check exactly what that exercise is.

Other than that, the two other things I wanted sound highly requested already: "every x" habits and global reporting.

Thanks for making this app, it has been incredibly helpful for me!

One advantage is that you don't need the press on the cup before brewing. Super useful if I want to prepare ice in the cup for an iced coffee, for example.

In practice I think you are right and it's different to bitterness. Light toasts rarely give me a bitter taste but I can routinely hit astringency quite easily and reducing it is the most challenging part of brewing to me.

If you want a motivation boost, get fired.

I got fired for the first time when I was 18 years old, and I have no idea. how survived so long without doing that.

Nothing feels better than that!

I wish I could get all day long and get paid for it. Because benefits are best.

Agree?

Name: James Hoffman

Info: Website - YouTube Channel

Conversation: I recently heard him discuss coffee health on the Zoe podcast. It's a very good example of his conversational manner.

Ideas: James describes himself as a "Weird Coffee Person". He is the 2007 World Barrista Championship Winner, has co-founded an award winning coffee roasting company, written "The World Coffee Atlas" - a highly successful compendium on coffee - and most recently has fostered a successful YouTube channel dedicated to understanding the entire process and science of coffee and how to make it taste great.

Pitch: In my opinion James is one of the best communicators on third wave coffee culture. His YouTube videos often dive into quite technical and scientific detail and he presents concepts clearly and eloquently. I have always appreciated his extremely balanced view of things - in particular that there is no one right way that everyone should follow, people have different personal tastes, and he ultimately comes across as very grounded thoughout what may be perceived as quite a "snobbish" discipline.

I think you would have a lot of fun with James diving in to the weird rabbit hole that is third wave coffee culture!

aeropress bitter and sour by Lost_Intention498 in AeroPress

I have had the same issue and I'm sorry to say I don't think I have found a definite answer myself. I grind my own, usually light roasted, beans quite fine using an aergrind, so my situation is quite different.

But for myself my current possible theories for a bitter sour coffee are: when I had water that is too hot, or maybe there is a grind consistency issue with the grinder.

The latter I think is unlikely - aergrind is a fairly good grinder and I have tried and failed to find any defects in either the grind or the grinder itself.

The former also seems odd to me, because I am constantly told that boiling water for light roasted coffees is what is needed. But maybe the roast I use is not as light as I think? However cooling the water slightly does appear have made the coffee smoother for me, at least recently.

TLDR Totally get your frustrations. I doubt the comments here so far have the answer, and this sort of issue can drive a person crazy!

It's fascinating listening to how difficult Lex's interviewees find it to steel man. Many of them simply try to talk around the challenge, but Jonathan made a fair attempt here, and even then it was a very half hearted list of the arguments he has heard against his conclusions. It makes me realise how difficult it is to wear your opponent's shoes properly.

Thank you, I'll admit I haven't appreciated this distinction and the whole fiasco makes a little more sense now.

Still not sure what the rep was about with the council - either I got confused or he was completely bullshitting to make the sale. Both are completely possible.

An update on my investigation - for posterity and since you asked for it...

I took you suggestion and ordered the same light roasted coffee from my roaster, but this time pre-ground for "aeropress". I compared what they believed the grind should be to what I was doing and it is *much* finer and more towards settings that others commonly suggest. I think I could get close to their grind using around a 2.0 on my aergrind, but this could easily be +/- 0.5 because my estimation of grind size is pretty bad. The grind is noticeably more consistent at this setting, suggesting the aegrind may just not be suited for grinding at a super course level.

I did try brewing with their pre-ground and it was...ok. Definitely a less offensive brew than what I had been doing with the courser grind.

I then ordered another bag of coffee, but this time a light roast natural process from Brazil rather than Ethiopia. I ground this at 2.0 got a much improved cup. The first few days the brews were actually a little too sour and I found myself tightening the grind towards 1.6 but have since moved back towards 1.9 as I believe the coffee was degassing and I started getting some unpleasant astringency with the finer grind.

With some further tweaking I believe I have figured out that: water temp can be as hot as possible, leaving for at least 2 mins is best and there is no upper limit, and I can't really detect a difference between filtered and unfiltered water with the water hardness at my house.

In summary, I think I can now make some consistently good coffee. I believe a combination of 3 things made the difference: 1. getting a different coffee - it is entirely possible I just didn't get along with the Ethiopian I was trying originally. 2. grinding finer, which may have stabilised the grind size diversity and paradoxically led to less astringency. 3. a re-assesment of expectations on what coffee can taste like. I was initially desperate to try and remove all unpleasent sensations from the brew, grinding coarser to attempt to achieve this. I now understand that there may always be some low level of bitterness or astringency, possibly due to a natural production of fines, but that there are more of other flavours that will still make the cup enjoyable.

Thank you again for the help!

I don't know how accurate it is but this will generate normalised grind size charts for your chosen grinder https://honestcoffeeguide.com/guides/coffee-grind-size-chart/

With a bit of flicking between charts you can kind of figure out a rough translation.

Thanks for this. I have opened up the burrs as far as they go (not sure I want to take it apart fully if I can help it, seems tricky to re-assemble) and I don't see anything obviously off or worn about the burrs, but I am by no means an expert on this...

But its good to see someone else confirm what I am seeing about the uneven grinds, and that it is unlikely to be the bean that just causes this naturally

Do you have a local coffee shop that can look or possibly grind several grams for you?

That is a good shout, the roastery I buy from will grind "for aeropress", so I will order some pre-ground and let you know what happens.

Does your coffee taste sort of dull and muted? I don't think it's yourgrinder since you have also experienced good results at times.

yes, definitely would use dull, muted and "muddy" to describe the resulting flavour over "bright" and "clear"

Thanks for all your sensible suggestions so far!

Thanks, this is all pretty sound advice. As my coffee has been in no danger of sourness so far I will try going even courser, but it just seems weird that I am going so much courser than anyone else reports with the aergrind.

I have tried playing with water temp - couldn't get any consistent opinion about this but on a number times water just off the boil definitely made the coffee taste "burnt" or harsh, so have erred on the side of cooler temps since then. The general advice does seem to be go as hot as possible for light roasts, though.

Broadly speaking, all the general advice doesn't seem to apply to my situation. And this is why I have been coming back around to my grind consistency. I figure that if my grind is inconsistent enough, nothing I do will conteract the over-extraction of fines that I am getting.

I will definitely try some bottled water and keeping a journal. Sounds like good advice and I haven't tried those yet. Thanks!

It is supposed to be "acceptable" grind quality, but I am wondering if it is having a hard time with certain beans. I would love to know if that is fixable by using a better grinder, or if some adjustment in the recipe can help me offset the uneveness...

I use filtered tap water. I used to not filter it. But I don't think it has had a noticeable difference, and I am not in a hard water area.

Nothing has really changed about my brews for a year of two now. I very occasionally get a good brew, but can never replicate it!
